Interventions with Sticky Social Norms: A Critique

Abstract We study the consequences of policy interventions when social norms are endogenous but costly to change. In our environment, a group faces a negative externality that it partially mitigates through incentives in the form of punishments. In this setting, policy interventions can have unexpected consequences. The most striking is that when the cost of bargaining is high, introducing a Pigouvian tax can increase output—yet in doing so increase welfare. An observer who saw that an increase in a Pigouvian tax raised output might wrongly conclude that this harmed welfare and that a larger tax increase would also raise output. International audience; A reading of the process of privatization through the corporate governance theory leads to propose a model taking into account, on the one hand, the time dimension of the process of privatization, on the other hand, the contextual, organizational, governance and strategic variables which influence this process. After replicating some traditional tests, we test this model on a sample of French privatized firms and on a seven years horizon. The positive effect traditionally attributed to privatizations is not confirmed. Performance of a sustainable asphalt mix incorporating high RAP content and novel bio-derived binder

The recent drive to find ways to increase sustainability and decrease costs in asphalt paving has led researchers to find innovative ways to incorporate more recycled materials and bio-derived binders into mixes with varying success. A new novel bio-derived binder made from refined pine chemistry stabilised with a polymer can increase the sustainability of asphalt mixes while maintaining pavement performance. Laboratory performance testing was conducted on asphalt mixes containing 50% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) by mix weight and the novel bio-derived binder. Comparing formulaicity of learner writing through phrase-frames: a corpus-driven study of Lithuanian and Polish EFL student writing

Learner corpus research continues to provide evidence of how formulaic language is (mis)used by learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). This paper deals with less investigated multi-word units in EFL contexts, namely, phrase-frames (Fletcher 2002–2007), i.e. sets of n-grams identical except for one word (it is * to, in the * of). The study compares Lithuanian and Polish learner writing in English in terms of phrase-frames and contrasts them with native speakers. The analysis shows that certain differences between Lithuanian and Polish learners result from transfer from their native languages, yet both groups of learners share many common features. Pēdējos gados tiek pievērsta lielāka uzmanība savienojumiem, kuriem piemīt spēja mijiedarboties ar netipiskām DNS struktūrām – guanīna kvadrupleksiem. Šī pētījuma darba mērķis bija izpētīt triciklisko 1,4-dihidropiridīna atvasinājumu (PP-544-NH4, PP-544-Na, PP-150-Na un B-5-Na) spēju mijiedarboties ar telomēras guanīna antiparalēlām un hibrīdformas kvadrupleksiem, kā arī spēju mijiedarboties ar vienpavediena DNS formu. Rezultātu iegūšanai tika izmantotas spektroskopijas metodes.
