Skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity during dynamic and isometric exercise in humans

The effects of dynamic and intermittent isometric knee extension exercises on skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity were studied in seven healthy endurance-trained men. Regional muscle blood flow was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) and an [15O]H2O tracer, and electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded in the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle during submaximal intermittent isometric and dynamic exercises. QF blood flow was 61% ( P = 0.002) higher during dynamic exercise. Interestingly, flow heterogeneity was 13% ( P = 0.024) lower during dynamic compared with intermittent isometric exercise. Testing utricular function by means of on-axis rotation

Subjective visual vertical (SVV) estimation during on-axis rotation provides an efficient screening test of utricle function. The survey demonstrates that isolated disorders of peripheral utricular function can occur while SCC function appears normal.The present study aimed to investigate estimation of SVV during constant velocity yaw rotation (with the head held on-axis--to enhance any asymmetry between right and left utricular responses), as a useful screening test.In all, 230 patients were recruited from the dizziness clinic. Relationships between mild hyperuricaemia and aortic stiffness in untreated hypertensive patients.

Background and aims: Clinical studies exploring the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and arterial stiffness yielded conflicting results. Only in a few of these studies, arterial distensibility was examined by measuring aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), which is considered the gold standard for evaluating arterial stiffness. Association of renal resistive index with aortic pulse wave velocity in hypertensive patients

Background: Recent data suggest that renal haemodynamic parameters obtained by duplex Doppler sonography, especially the intrarenal resistive index (RI), may be associated with systemic vascular changes. However, conflicting data exist about the independent relationship between aortic stiffness and RI. Evoked potential study in facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy.

Nerve conduction velocities (NCVs), somatosensory (SEPs) and auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 9 patients with facio-scapulo-humeral dystrophy (FSHD) and in 20 age-matched controls. In FSHD patients a significant increase of the nerve distal sensory latencies and of the absolute SEP latencies revealed a subclinical involvement of the afferent sensory pathways, as well as the abnormal slowing of the later components of the BAEPs, pointed to a central auditory dysfunction. CT-guided stereotactic biopsy aided by Doppler ultrasonic vascular monitoring

The use of a 20 MHz pulsed Doppler technique during stereotactic brain tumour biopsies is described. By means of a miniaturized ultrasonic probe the tissue planned for biopsy was investigated for vessel signals. Out of 41 patients, with this technique a flow-pulse curve in front of the biopsy cannula was registered in 14 cases. In 9 cases one pulse curve was determined and in 5 cases two or more flow curves were found, indicating the presence of arterial vessels. The depth of the vessels signal could be localized and this area avoided for biopsy sampling. In a series of 41 stereotactic biopsies carried out in this way there was no intra-operative haemorrhage or postoperative haematoma.

Clonidine induces nitric oxide- and prostaglandin-mediated vasodilation in healthy human skin

Sustained sympathetic activation not only leads to vasoconstriction but also might induce paradox vasodilation. This study was performed to explore whether and how alpha(2)-receptor stimulation mediates this vasodilation. We investigated 11 healthy subjects in 33 dermal microdialysis (MD) sessions. After nerve trunk blockade, MD fibers were inserted and perfused with physiological saline until skin trauma-related vasodilation subsided.
