GEM

2014

The widespread use of digital sensor systems causes a tremendous demand for high-quality time series analysis tools. In this domain the majority of data mining algorithms relies on established distance measures like Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) or Euclidean distance (ED). However, the notion of similarity induced by ED and DTW may lead to unsatisfactory clusterings. In order to address this shortcoming we introduce the Gliding Elastic Match (GEM) algorithm. It determines an optimal local similarity measure of a query time series Q and a subject time series S. The measure is invariant under both local deformation on the measurement-axis and scaling in the time domain. GEM is compared to ED and…

Exome sequencing of three cases of familial exceptional longevity

2014

Exceptional longevity (EL) is a rare phenotype that can cluster in families, and co-segregation of genetic variation in these families may point to candidate genes that could contribute to extended lifespan. In this study, for the first time, we have sequenced a total of seven exomes from exceptionally long-lived siblings (probands ≥ 103 years and at least one sibling ≥ 97 years) that come from three separate families. We have focused on rare functional variants (RFVs) which have ≤ 1% minor allele frequency according to databases and that are likely to alter gene product function. Based on this, we have identified one candidate longevity gene carrying RFVs in all three families, APOB. Inter…

RootsGLOH2: embedding RootSIFT 'square rooting' in sGLOH2

2020

This study introduces an extension of the shifting gradient local orientation histogram doubled (sGLOH2) local image descriptor inspired by RootSIFT ‘square rooting’ as a way to indirectly alter the matching distance used to compare the descriptor vectors. The extended descriptor, named RootsGLOH2, achieved the best results in terms of matching accuracy and robustness among the latest state-of-the-art non-deep descriptors in recent evaluation contests dealing with both planar and non-planar scenes. RootsGLOH2 also achieves a matching accuracy very close to that obtained by the best deep descriptors to date. Beside confirming that ‘square rooting’ has beneficial effects on sGLOH2 as it happe…

Using Hankel matrices for dynamics-based facial emotion recognition and pain detection

2015

This paper proposes a new approach to model the temporal dynamics of a sequence of facial expressions. To this purpose, a sequence of Face Image Descriptors (FID) is regarded as the output of a Linear Time Invariant (LTI) system. The temporal dynamics of such sequence of descriptors are represented by means of a Hankel matrix. The paper presents different strategies to compute dynamics-based representation of a sequence of FID, and reports classification accuracy values of the proposed representations within different standard classification frameworks. The representations have been validated in two very challenging application domains: emotion recognition and pain detection. Experiments on…

CLEAR: Covariant LEAst-Square Refitting with Applications to Image Restoration

2017

International audience; In this paper, we propose a new framework to remove parts of the systematic errors affecting popular restoration algorithms, with a special focus for image processing tasks. Generalizing ideas that emerged for $\ell_1$ regularization, we develop an approach re-fitting the results of standard methods towards the input data. Total variation regularizations and non-local means are special cases of interest. We identify important covariant information that should be preserved by the re-fitting method, and emphasize the importance of preserving the Jacobian (w.r.t. the observed signal) of the original estimator. Then, we provide an approach that has a ``twicing'' flavor a…

Depth-Adapted CNN for RGB-D cameras

2020

Conventional 2D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) extract features from an input image by applying linear filters. These filters compute the spatial coherence by weighting the photometric information on a fixed neighborhood without taking into account the geometric information. We tackle the problem of improving the classical RGB CNN methods by using the depth information provided by the RGB-D cameras. State-of-the-art approaches use depth as an additional channel or image (HHA) or pass from 2D CNN to 3D CNN. This paper proposes a novel and generic procedure to articulate both photometric and geometric information in CNN architecture. The depth data is represented as a 2D offset to adapt …

Elastic Wave Near-Cloaking

2020

Cloaking elastic waves has, in contrast to the cloaking of electromagnetic waves, remained a fundamental challenge: the latter successfully uses the invariance of Maxwell's equations, from which the field of transformational optics has emerged, whereas the elastic Navier equations are not invariant under coordinate transformations. Our aim is to overcome this challenge, at least in practical terms, and thereby unlock applications in mechanics, ultrasound, vibration mitigation, non-destructive evaluation and elastic wave control. We achieve near-cloaking by recognising that, despite the lack of invariance, a decoupling into a system of form invariant potential equations together with a quant…

Search forBs0→μ+μ−andB0→μ+μ−Decays with CDF II

2011

A search has been performed for B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and B{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decays using 7 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The observed number of B{sup 0} candidates is consistent with background-only expectations and yields an upper limit on the branching fraction of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}) < 6.0 x 10{sup -9} at 95% confidence level. We observe an excess of B{sub s}{sup 0} candidates. The probability that the background processes alone could produce such an excess or larger is 0.27%. The probability that the combination of background and the expe…
