Consumption of vegetables at dinner in a cohort of Norwegian adolescents.

Abstract This longitudinal study examined the frequency of consumption of vegetables for dinner by Norwegian adolescents and their parents. Associations of perceived availability, correlations and stability were explored. The longitudinal cohort consist of 1950 adolescents attending 6th/7th (2002) and 9th/10th (2005) grade, and their parents (n = 1647). Only 40% of the adolescents and 60% of the adults reported to have eaten vegetables for dinner yesterday, the reported frequency of vegetables for dinner were 3.7 and 4.1 times/week in 2002 and 2005, respectively, and 4.8 times/week for parents. The role of vegetables usually consumed without prior culinary treatment is known to contribute to the prevalence of foodborne diseases. Cysts and oocysts can contaminate food, which can then be the source of infection in humans. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. (oo) cysts in green leafy vegetables marketed in the city of Valencia (Spain) combining parasitological methods, two real-time qPCRs and light microscopy. Fast simultaneous determination of prominent polyphenols in vegetables and fruits by reversed phase liquid chromatography using a fused-core column

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method with photodiode array detection has been developed enabling the joint determination of 17 prominent flavonoids and phenolic acids in vegetables and fruits. A multi-segmented gradient program using a fused-core column for the separation of several phenolic classes (phenolic acids and flavonoids) has been optimised. The influence of extraction conditions (sample freeze-drying, ultrasound extraction, solvent composition and extraction time) has been also optimised using response surface methodology with tomato samples as a model. The basic principles and recent developments in the extraction and quantitation of pesticides are discussed. Determination of urea-derived pesticides in fruits and vegetables by solid-phase preconcentration and capillary electrophoresis

A multiresidue analytical method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) enrichment combined with capillary electrophoresis (CE), using micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC), was developed to determine ten substituted urea pesticides in orange and tomato samples. Several factors such as pH, composition and concentration of the buffer, concentration of surfactant, addition of organic solvent, and working voltage were optimized to obtain the best compound separation in the shortest time. Uptake and bioavailability of persistant organic pollutants by plants grown in contaminated soil

This paper assesses the uptake of persistent organic pollutants (POP's) into plants. In particular, uptake of alpha-endosulfan, beta-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate from lettuce. The lettuce plants were grown on compost that had previously been contaminated at 10 and 50 microg g(-1) per POP. The soil was slurry spiked by adding the appropriate amount of POP in acetone in an approximate ratio of 1 ratio 2, w/v soil ratio solvent. The solvent was left to evaporate at ambient temperature for 24 hours. Lettuce plants were grown under artificial daylight for 12 hours a day. Assessment of Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in West African City Farms: Banjul and Dakar Case Study

Validated analytical procedures for the determination of 21 organochlorine pesticides have been applied to 74 water samples, 76 soil samples, and 160 vegetable samples from nine Sene-Gambian farms. Mean pesticide residue levels found were compared to the results of other studies. The main contaminants were DDTs in water (231.9 ng/L), in soil (71.4 ng/g), and in vegetables (5.03 ng/g). The distribution of pesticide residues in water and neighboring soils and the soil-plant transfer of these pesticides is briefly discussed. Volatile constituents of aerial parts of two Mediterranean species of Inula: Inula crithmoides L. and I. verbascifolia (Willd.) Hausskn. (Asteraceae)

Inula crithmoides L. grows along the Mediterranean coasts and is used as an edible vegetable as the young leaves or shoots are eaten raw, cooked or pickled. Inula verbascifolia (Willd.) Hausskn. is a quite localised species growing mainly along the Adriatic Sea coasts. In this study the volatile components of the aerial part of both species are described. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of 41 components in I. crithmoides and 75 compounds in I. verbascifolia, respectively, and a very different profile in the composition of the two species.
