La letteratura italiana racconta la caduta del muro di Berlino

2020

The fall of the wall is an event that sets a date and raises a symbolic watershed that separates the before from the after. The essay analyzes the Italian literary texts that were directly confronted with the events of 1989 by reviewing a period of time that goes from the day after the fall of the wall to the present day. From Fortini to Volponi, from Giudici to Arbasino, up to Lagioia, Affinati and Camilleri: for these writers talking about the Berlin Wall means reflecting on the crisis of ideologies, on the contradictions of history, on the relationship between literature and reality.

Large Eddy Simulations of Rough Turbulent Channel Flows Bounded by Irregular Roughness: Advances Toward a Universal Roughness Correlation

2020

The downward shift of the mean velocity profile in the logarithmic region, known as roughness function, $$\Delta U^+$$ , is the major macroscopic effect of roughness in wall bounded flows. This speed decrease, which is strictly linked to the friction Reynolds number and the geometrical properties which define the roughness pattern such as roughness height, density, shape parameters, has been deeply investigated in the past decades. Among the geometrical parameters, the effective slope (ES) seems to be suitable to estimate the roughness function at fixed friction Reynolds number, Re $$_{\tau }$$ . In the present work, the effects of several geometrical parameters on the roughness function, i…

Comparison of the structure of the plasma-facing surface and tritium accumulation in beryllium tiles from JET ILW campaigns 2011-2012 and 2013-2014

2019

In this study, beryllium tiles from Joint European Torus (JET) vacuum vessel wall were analysed and compared regarding their position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation conditions during two campaigns of ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) in 2011-2012 (ILW1) and 2013-2014 (ILW2) Tritium content in beryllium samples were assessed. Two methods were used to measure tritium content in the samples - dissolution under controlled conditions and tritium thermal desorption. Prior to desorption and dissolution experiments, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to study structure and chemical composition of plasma-facing-surfaces of the beryllium sampl…

Cell Wall and Secreted Proteins ofCandida albicans: Identification, Function, and Expression

1998

SUMMARYThe cell wall is essential to nearly every aspect of the biology and pathogenicity of Candida albicans. Although it was intially considered an almost inert cellular structure that protected the protoplast against osmotic offense, more recent studies have demonstrated that it is a dynamic organelle. The major components of the cell wall are glucan and chitin, which are associated with structural rigidity, and mannoproteins. The protein component, including both mannoprotein and nonmannoproteins, comprises some 40 or more moieties. Wall proteins may differ in their expression, secretion, or topological location within the wall structure. Proteins may be modified by glycosylation (prima…

Changes in the cell wall glycoprotein composition of Candida albicans associated to the inhibition of germ tube formation by EDTA.

1994

Hyphal development in Candida albicans was blocked by EDTA. This effect was not due to a general growth inhibition since the chelator did not affect protein and DNA synthesis. Recovery of mycelial growth was observed when EDTA-grown cells were incubated at 37 degrees C in EDTA-free medium. High-molecular-weight mannoproteins (HMWM) that are mycelium-specific wall components, and particularly a 260-kDa species (HMWM-260), were absent in the wall of cells grown under germination conditions in the presence of EDTA. Synthesis of the HMWM-260 species was not inhibited but its incorporation (secretion) into the wall structure seemed to be blocked in EDTA-treated cells.

Open Field Study of Some Zea mays Hybrids, Lipid Compounds and Fumonisins Accumulation

2015

Lipid molecules are increasingly recognized as signals exchanged by organisms interacting in pathogenic and/or symbiotic ways. Some classes of lipids actively determine the fate of the interactions. Host cuticle/cell wall/membrane components such as sphingolipids and oxylipins may contribute to determining the fate of host–pathogen interactions. In the present field study, we considered the relationship between specific sphingolipids and oxylipins of different hybrids of Zea mays and fumonisin by F. verticillioides, sampling ears at different growth stages from early dough to fully ripe. The amount of total and free fumonisin differed significantly between hybrids and increased significantl…

Effect of α-factor on individual wall mannoproteins fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae acells

1985

Treatment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae a cells with α-factor partially inhibits mannosylation of the high Mr mannoproteins, although there is an increase in the total amount of these molecules present in the wall. They show a similar mobility in SDS-acrylamide gels to those from untreated mnn2 cells. No other significant effects on wall mannoproteins have been observed, except a decrease in the amount of the 29 kDa species.

Calcium binding and ionic conduction in single conical nanopores with polyacid chains: model and experiments.

2012

Calcium binding to fixed charge groups confined over nanoscale regions is relevant to ion equilibrium and transport in the ionic channels of the cell membranes and artificial nanopores. We present an experimental and theoretical description of the dissociation equilibrium and transport in a single conical nanopore functionalized with pH-sensitive carboxylic acid groups and phosphonic acid chains. Different phenomena are simultaneously present in this basic problem of physical and biophysical chemistry: (i) the divalent nature of the phosphonic acid groups fixed to the pore walls and the influence of the pH and calcium on the reversible dissociation equilibrium of these groups; (ii) the asym…

The diffusion of carbon atoms inside carbon nanotubes

2008

We combine electron irradiation experiments in a transmission electron microscope with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to determine the mobility of interstitial carbon atoms in single-walled carbon nanotubes. We measure the irradiation dose necessary to cut nanotubes repeatedly with a focused electron beam as a function of the separation between the cuts and at different temperatures. As the cutting speed is related to the migration of displaced carbon atoms trapped inside the tube and to their recombination with vacancies, we obtain information about the mobility of the trapped atoms and estimate their migration barrier to be about 0.25 eV. This is an experimental confirmation of the remar…

The transcriptomes of columnar and standard type apple trees (Malus x domestica) - a comparative study.

2011

Columnar apple trees (Malus x domestica) provide several economic advantages due to their specific growth habit. The columnar phenotype is the result of the dominant allele of the gene Co and is characterized by thick stems with short internodes and reduced lateral branching. Co is located on chromosome 10 and often appears in a heterozygous state (Co/co). The molecular explanation of columnar growth is not well established. Therefore, we studied the transcriptomes of columnar and standard type apple trees using 454 and Illumina next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. We analyzed the transcriptomes of shoot apical meristems (SAMs) because we expect that these organs are involved in f…
