Background and Purpose Stimulation of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) is a valuable therapeutic strategy for the treatment of several cardiovascular diseases. The sGC stimulator riociguat has been approved for the treatment of two forms of pulmonary hypertension. Platelets contain large amounts of sGC and play a key role in the regulation of haemostasis. Therefore, we investigated the effects of riociguat on platelet function. Experimental Approach The effect of riociguat treatment on human platelet activation and aggregation was investigated. Abstract Sixteen patients with chronic cerebrovascular disease were treated with a monotherapeutic regimen of nimodipine 30 mg orally three times a day. At baseline and after 45 and 90 days of therapy, the patients' whole blood filterability, erythrocyte membrane fluidity, red blood cell membrane protein lateral mobility, and red blood cell Ca 2+ content (total and cytosolic) were evaluated. After 45 days, an increase in whole blood filterability and a decrease in the cytosolic red cell Ca 2+ content was seen. Abstract Whole blood filtration, mean erythrocyte aggregation, and erythrocyte membrane fluidity were examined in 10 patients with vascular atherosclerotic disease (VAD) and in 15 VAD patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) treated with mesoglycan (100 mg orally twice a day) for 30 days. The red cell membrane transverse fluidity gradient was evaluated in the VAD subjects, and the red cell membrane protein lateral mobility was measured in the VAD subjects with NIDDM. The flowers of Marantaceae are known for their unique pollination mechanism mediated by an explosive style movement. The mechanism is based on the highly modified elements of the inner androecial whorl, i.e., the single half-fertile anther and the fleshy and hooded staminodes. We investigated 67 species across 24 genera to elucidate which parts of the hooded staminode are shared by all species, thus likely under strong selection pressure, and which are allowed to vary. 289 patients were simultaneously investigated with a partially shielded whole body counter (Oberhausen) and in camera technique to correlate the values of the MAG3-clearance. Good correlation was found for the often used times schedules of taking blood samples. Late blood samples increase high clearance values in both methods slighly. The shape of the ROI has no influence using camera technique. We conclude, that camera technique can replace the Oberhausen method with a partially shielded whole body counter.
Correlations between Rabi oscillations and atomic translational dynamics

We analyze some aspects of the internal and translational dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with a resonant standing wave of an ideal cavity. We show that the cavity vacuum field can split the incoming wave packet of the excited two-level atom into two parts, whose scalar product in the Hilbert space determines the behavior of the Rabi oscillations. The state of the whole system is derived and allows us to study the correlations between the internal and the translational atomic dynamics. We find that these correlations become negligible when the two parts are sufficiently away from each other in the space.

Thresholds for the detection of linear oscillatory motion at 0.3 Hz in the X, Y and Z body axes were determined during the flight of Spacelab-1 and on the ground pre- and post-flight, using the method of limits with a single staircase procedure. Pre-flight, Z axis thresholds (mean 0.077 ms-2) were significantly higher than X and Y thresholds (mean 0.029 ms-2). Measures obtained on three crew members in-flight exhibited thresholds greater, by a factor of 1.5-4.3, than those obtained pre-flight. Post-flight, two crew members had significantly elevated X and Y axis thresholds whereas the other two crew members had lowered thresholds in X, Y and Z axes. A 20-channel phased-array coil for MRI of mice has been designed, constructed, and validated with bench measurements and high-resolution accelerated imaging. The technical challenges of designing a small, high density array have been overcome using individual small-diameter coil elements arranged on a cylinder in a hexagonal overlapping design with adjacent low impedance preamplifiers to further decouple the array elements. The objective was to analyze body composition in children and adolescents of Southern Europe to identify prevalence of overweight and obesity. This investigation involved 512 girls and 488 boys between 7-to 19-years. Variables evaluated were Body Mass Index (BMI) and Fat Mass (FM; electrical bioimpedance). The references used to establish prevalence according to BMI were those of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF); in the case of FM, the Child Growth Foundation (CGF) reference was used.
