Abstract A new class of biocompatible and scalable phospholipid vesicles was developed, aiming at improving the efficacy of baicalin on the skin. Phosphatidylcholine and baicalin (a natural polyphenol) were hydrated in two steps with a mixture of ethanol, glycerol, and propylene glycol at different ratios, and a low amount of water (4%). Hence, water was almost completely replaced by the co-solvents, which were never used before as predominant dispersing medium of phospholipid vesicles. The vesicles appeared three-dimensionally structured, forming a network that conferred a high viscosity to the dispersions. Local dynamic properties of the heme pocket in native and solvent-induced molten-globule-like states of cytochrome c

We report the Soret absorption band, down to cryogenic temperature, of native and molten-globule-like state of horse heart cytochrome c. The band profile is analyzed in terms of vibronic coupling of the heme normal modes to the electronic transition in the framework of the Franck-Condon approximation. From the temperature dependence of the Gaussian broadening and of the peak position, we obtain information on the 'bath' of low frequency harmonic motions of the heme group within the heme pocket. Wetting properties at the surface of iota-carrageenan-based edible films

International audience; Surface properties of edible films composed of a polymeric matrix of carrageenan in association with hydrophobic material were studied by contact angle measurements. The use of this technique not only in a static mode but also in a dynamic way enables investigation of surface hydrophobicity as well as surface wettability. Metal-ion complexes of Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ with 4,6–O–benzylidene–N–(o–carboxyphenyl)–β–D–glucopyranosylamine were synthesized and isolated as solid products and characterized by analytical means as well as by spectral techniques, such as, 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, absorption, FAB mass spectrometry, optical rotation and CD. While the alkali metal ions formed ML type of complexes, the other metal ions formed ML2 type complexes. Influence of metal–support interaction on the surface structure of gold nanoclusters deposited on native SiOx/Si substrates

The structure of small gold nanoclusters (R ~ 2.5 nm) deposited on different silica on silicon substrates is investigated using several characterization techniques (AFM, XRD, EXAFS and GISAXS). The grain morphology and the surface roughness of the deposited gold clusters are determined by AFM. The in-plane GISAXS intensity is modelled in order to obtain information about the cluster size and the characteristic length scale of the surface roughness. AFM and GISAXS results are in excellent agreement and show that the surface morphology of the deposited clusters depends on whether defect-rich (native) or defect-free (thermal) silica is used as a substrate. Landfill gas upgrading with countercurrent water wash.

A pilot-scale countercurrent absorption process for upgrading landfill gas to produce vehicle fuel was studied using absorption and desorption units and water as absorbent. The height-to-diameter ratio of the absorption column used was 3:1 instead of the more conventionally used 20:1 ratio, and a higher pressure was used along with a lower water flow rate. The effects of pressure (10-30 bar) and water and gas flow-ratios on the upgrading process were studied. Methane content in the product gas increased to near or above 90% with both gas flows (50 and 100 l/min) used at over 20 bar pressure with 10 l/min water flow and at 30 bar pressure with 5l/min water flow. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are one of the most widely used groups of drugs and their potential toxicity is periodically reviewed, emphasizing aspects originally considered secondary. The present review analyzes the physiological and pharmacological bases and the scarce clinical evidence for a potential association between the continued administration of PPI and the development of osteoporosis and bone fractures. Both disorders are clearly related to calcium homeostasis and are highly important in elderly patients due to their poor general prognosis and disabling consequences.

Bei Normalpersonen und Patienten mit Malabsorption, Maldigestion und Lebercirrhose wurden vor und nach oraler Belastung mit 600 000 E Vitamin-A-palmitat bzw. wasserloslichem Vitamin A im Serum der Spiegel des Vitamin A (Retinol), des Retinol-bindenden Proteins (RBP) und Praealbumin bestimmt. In der Kontrolle steigt das Retinol nach Belastung signifikant an und erreicht nach 5 Std sein Maximum. Das RBP liegt im Mittel bei 42,25 mg/L, der Praealbuminspiegel bei 400 mg/L. Patienten mit Malabsorption und Lebercirrhose zeigen vor und nach Belastung mit Vitamin-A-palmitat einen gegenuber der Kontrolle verminderten Retinolspiegel.
