The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hemodialysis duration on HDL(2) and HDL(3) compositions and lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity in 58 patients on acetate hemodialysis using cuprophane membrane, after different periods of dialysis. Patients were divided into three groups-GI1 year, GII 1-5 years, GIII 5-13 years of dialysis and were compared with 22 controls. Increase by 34% of triacylglycerols (TG) was noted in GI and by 36% in GII versus GI. Hypertriglyceridemia was correlated with hemodialysis duration (HD) (r=0.75, P0.05). SummaryThe effects of two low doses of aspirin (20 mg and 100 mg) on prostacyclin and thromboxane formation during whole blood clotting were studied in 8 healthy volunteers.A single 100 mg aspirin dose caused more than 90% reduction of both serum TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1α; a single 20 mg dose of aspirin inhibited serum TXB2 more than 6-keto-PGF1α but effects on these two products could not be completely dissociated.However, the effect of a single 20 mg aspirin dose on serum TXB2, was of much longer duration than its inhibitory effect on PGI2 synthesis during whole blood clotting.

Treatment with essential amino acids in patients on chronic hemodialysis: a double blind cross-over study.

Patients on chronic hemodialysis may suffer from a latent protein deficiency, and therapy with essential amino acids has been recommended. In a double blind cross-over study, 13 hemodialysis patients received orally 15.7 g of essential amino acids daily over a 3-month period. Patients were on a liberal diet, containing 1 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Hemodialysis was adequate. Therapy resulted in an increase in urea, uric acid, C3 c complement factor and a fall in C4. Lysine levels increased and phenylalanine fell. Plasmas of patients with Tangier disease (TD) lack lipid-rich α-HDL which, in normal plasma, constitutes the majority of high density lipoprotein (HDL). Residual amounts of apolipoprotein (apo)A-I in TD plasma occur as lipid-poor or even lipid-free preβ-HDL. By contrast to normal plasma, TD plasma does not convert preβ-HDL into α-HDL. Moreover, fibroblasts of TD patients were found to be defective in secreting cholesterol or phospholipids in the presence of lipid-free apoA-I.
