Anisakis sensitization in different population groups and public health impact. A systematic review
2018
Anisakis simplex spp. sensitization rates have increased worldwide, with a significant impact on health-care systems. To date, no clear-cut diagnostic criteria and laboratory algorithm have been established, so anisakiasis still represents an under-reported health problem whose clinical manifestations, when present, mimic the much more common allergic and digestive disorders. Aim of the study was to systematically review the available literature on the prevalence of sensitization against Anisakis in the general population and in specific population groups, taking into account the impact of the different available diagnostic techniques on the epidemiological data. Following the Preferred Rep…
Component-Resolved Diagnosis of American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) Allergy in Patients From Different Geographical Areas
2021
Background:Manifestation of respiratory allergy to American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is prominent in the subtropical and tropical areas. However, co-existing perennial indoor inhalant allergies frequently compromise clinical diagnosis of cockroach allergy, and the analysis of sensitization pattern is limited by the lack ofPeriplanetaallergens widely available for component-resolved diagnostics (CRD).Objective:To evaluate a collection of previously described recombinantPeriplanetaallergens for CRD in cockroach allergy. Methods:A panel of nine recombinantPeriplaneta allergens (Per a 1–5, 7–10) was generated, purified, and subjected to physicochemical characterization by applying circu…
Technical standards in allergen exposure chambers worldwide - an EAACI Task Force Report
2021
Allergen exposure chambers (AECs) can be used for controlled exposure to allergenic and non-allergenic airborne particles in an enclosed environment, in order to (i) characterize the pathological features of respiratory diseases and (ii) contribute to and accelerate the clinical development of pharmacological treatments and allergen immunotherapy for allergic disease of the respiratory tract (such as allergic rhinitis, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and allergic asthma). In the guidelines of the European Medicines Agency for the clinical development of products for allergen immunotherapy (AIT), the role of AECs in determining primary endpoints in dose-finding Phase II trials is emphasized. A…
Nasal IgE in subjects with allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
2020
Abstract Purpose The prevalence of "ocal allergic rhinitis" within individuals suffering from perennial rhinitis remains uncertain, and patients usually are diagnosed with non-allergic rhinitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of a potential "local allergic rhinitis" in subjects suffering from non-allergic rhinitis in a non-selected group of young students. Methods 131 students (age 25.0 ± 5.1 years) with a possible allergic rhinitis and 25 non-allergic controls without rhinitis symptoms (age 22.0 ± 2.0 years) were recruited by public postings. 97 of 131 students with rhinitis were tested positive (≥3 mm) to prick testing with 17 frequent allergens at visit 1. Twenty-fo…
PREVISION JOURNALIERE DES POLLENS SUR LE TERRITOIRE NATIONAL FRANÇAIS, AVEC UN OBJECTIF D'INFORMATION SANITAIRE DES POPULATIONS ALLERGIQUES
2008
At present, 16% of French people suffer from allergies to one or several pollens. The corresponding symptoms can be presented as under benign form (rhinitis, conjunctivitis, cough) as under much more serious form : asthma. Forecast of the starting date of an allergic exposure risk to pollens is necessary from a sanitary and preventive standpoint. Forecast has to be more precisely as possible in order to begin anti-allergic treatments at appropriate moment, with a view of effectiveness and reduction of the costs due to this disease. The present study, taking place in all the French territory, concerns four pollen taxa among the most allergenic : ash, birch, grasses and ragweed. This work com…
Development of environmental health competencies through compulsory education. A polyhedral approach based on the SDGs
2020
This paper focuses on the competencies in environmental health acquired by students during compulsory education. Questionnaires addressing environmental health problems were completed by 923 students of primary and secondary schools from five different Spanish regions. The results for five challenging situations related to hunger, consumerism, climate change, pollution in the cities and allergies are analysed according to the internal coherence of each sub-competency, i.e., addressing knowledge, skills and attitudes towards these topics. Our results show that problems related to air and water pollution were the most commonly described by the students. Focusing on competency achievement, the…
Mast cells partly contribute to allergic enteritis development: Findings in two different mast cell-deficient mice
2021
Allergic enteritis (AE) is a gastrointestinal form of food allergy. The presence of mast cells and granulocytes has been detected in the inflamed tissues in AE. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the role of mast cells in AE development using two mast cell-deficient mouse strains: KIT(W-sh/W-sh) bearing the W-sash (W(sh)) inversion mutation and Cpa3Cre/+, which lack mast cells due to Cre-mediated mast cell eradication, were used in an AE experimental model. The development of clinical symptoms (e.g. drop in body temperature and weight loss) were abolished in both strains, whereas inflammatory levels of AE (e.g. villous atrophy, edema, and granulocyte accumulation) were reduced mainly in K…
Management of allergic disease in the elderly: key considerations, recommendations and emerging therapies
2015
The number of people over 65 is increasing around the world. At present, between 5 and 10% of allergic diseases affect the elderly. In particular, rhinitis is increasing worldwide; the presence of high comorbidity makes the therapy of asthma even more complicated. With reference to dermatological allergies, the dryness of the skin favors the onset of allergic contact and atopic dermatitis, while the senescence of mucous membranes and the impaired secretion of polymeric IgA could be linked to food allergy. Overcoming the problem of adverse drug reaction is limited by the diagnostic difficulty in patients taking multiple drugs. In addition, some drugs, such as β-blockers, angiotensin-converti…
Children monosensitized to pine nuts have similar patterns of sensitization
2012
Background Several cases of pine nut allergies and anaphylaxis have been reported in the literature, but only few pine nut allergens have been characterized. The aim of this research is to identify through immunoelectrophoretic techniques the major pine nut allergens in a group of children monosensitized to pine nuts. Methods We studied five children with pine nut allergies and no other sensitization to food except to pine nuts, confirmed by in vivo (prick test, prick-to-prick) and in vitro tests (specific IgE determinations [CAP-FEIA]). The protein profile of pine nuts was analyzed by Sodium Dodecyl sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Immunoblotting was performed after i…
The Development of the MeDALL Core Questionnaires for a Harmonized Follow-Up Assessment of Eleven European Birth Cohorts on Asthma and Allergies
2014
Background: Numerous birth cohorts have been initiated in the world over the past 30 years using heterogeneous methods to assess the incidence, course and risk factors of asthma and allergies. The aim of the present work is to provide the stepwise proceedings of the development and current version of the harmonized MeDALL-Core Questionnaire (MeDALL-CQ) used prospectively in 11 European birth cohorts. Methods: The harmonization of questions was accomplished in 4 steps: (i) collection of variables from 14 birth cohorts, (ii) consensus on questionnaire items, (iii) translation and back-translation of the harmonized English MeDALL-CQ into 8 other languages and (iv) implementation of the harmoni…
