Comparison between hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor and activated sludge system: a pilot plant experiment
2010
The paper presents the comparison between the traditional activated sludge system (AS) and a hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor (HMBBR). In particular, an experimental campaign has been carried out at the WWTP in Palermo (Italy), on a pilot plant consisting of two pre-anoxic schemes. The aerated tank of the HMBBR line was filled with suspended carriers (AnoxKaldnes™ K1), with a 30% filling ratio. The hydraulic load of the HMBBR line was increased up to two times the AS one. Further, in order to distinguish the additional contribution of the attached biomass for the HMBBR system, in the two lines the Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) was maintained as equal as possible. The monitoring peri…
Increased resistance to oxidation of betalain-enriched human low density lipoproteins
2003
Betalains are natural pigments recently considered as compounds with potential antioxidative properties. In this work, ex vivo plasma spiking of pure either betanin or indicaxanthin, followed by isolation of low density lipoprotein (LDL), and measurement of its resistance to copper-induced oxidation, has been used to research if these betalains can bind to LDL and prevent oxidation of LDL lipids. When pooled human plasma from 10 healthy volunteers was incubated in the presence of 25-100 microM either betanin or indicaxanthin, incorporation of both compounds in LDL was observed, with a maximum binding of 0.52 +/- 0.08, and 0.51 +/- 0.06 nmoles of indicaxanthin and betanin, respectively, per …
Preparation of electrophoretic variants of Corticosteroid-binding Globulin (CBG) using liquid liquid partition chromatography
1988
Abstract Human corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) was purified to homogeneity by application of three different chromatographic methods. After fractionation of pregnancy serum with ammonium sulfate the 80%-pellet was used for affinity chromatography based on tresyl activated Sepharose (Pharmacia, Uppsala, Sweden). The affinity eluate was injected into a Mono Q anion exchange column (Pharmacia). Fractions containing CBG were finally purified by liquid liquid chromatography on LiParGel 750 (Merck, Darmstadt, F.R.G.) 1,2 . The purified protein was characterized by IEF and PAGE. This paper describes a method for the chromatographic separation of the two variants of CBG without a loss of bind…
Multilayer capsules: a promising microencapsulation system for transplantation of pancreatic islets
2001
In 1980, Lim and Sun introduced a microcapsule coated with an alginate/polylysine complex for encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Characteristic to this type of capsule is, that it consists of a plain membrane which is formed during a single procedural step. With such a simple process it is difficult to obtain instantly a membrane optimized with respect to all the properties requested for islet transplantation. To overcome these difficulties, it is recommended to build up the membrane in several consecutive steps, each optimized for a certain property. In this study, we have analysed such a multilayer microcapsule for the encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Therefore, empty and islet contai…
The quantitative determination of metabolites of 6-mercaptopurine in biological materials. VII. Chemical synthesis by phosphorylation of 6-thioguanos…
1990
Abstract A fast and reliable two-step method has been established for the chemical synthesis of 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate, 6-thioguanosine 5′-diphosphate and 6-thioguanosine 5′-triphosphate starting from the ribonucleoside. In the first step, 6-thioguanosine dissolved in triethyl phosphate, at high yield reacts with phosphorus oxide trichloride to 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate which is purified by anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex using a step gradient of hydrochloric acid. In the second step, 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate dissolved in water, reacts with phosphoric acid in the presence of pyridine/dicyclohexyl carbodiimide and is converted to 6-thioguanosine 5′-dip…

The (2-phenyl-2-trimethylsilyl)ethyl-(PTMSEL)-linker in the synthesis of glycopeptide partial structures of complex cell surface glycoproteins.
2003
The (2-phenyl-2-trimethylsilyl)ethyl-(PTMSEL) linker represents a novel fluoride-sensitive anchor for the solid-phase synthesis of protected peptides and glycopeptides. Its cleavage is achieved under almost neutral conditions using tetrabutylammonium fluoride trihydrate in dichloromethane thus allowing the construction of complex molecules sensitive to basic and acidic media commonly required for the cleavage of standard linker systems. The advantages of the PTMSEL linker are demonstrated in the synthesis of glycopeptides from the liver intestine (LI)-cadherin and the mucin MUC1, bearing carbohydrate moieties such as N-linked chitobiose or O-linked sialyl-T(N)-residues. The synthesis of the…
Tris(cyclo-hexyl-ammonium) cis-di-chlorido-bis-(oxalato-κ(2) O (1),O (2))stann-ate(IV) chloride monohydrate.
2013
The crystal structure of the title compound, (C6H14N)3[Sn(C2O4)2Cl2]Cl·H2O, contains three cyclohexylammonium cations, one stannate(IV) dianion, one isolated chloride anion and one lattice water molecule. The cyclohexylammonium cations adopt chair conformations. In the complex anion, two bidentate oxalate ligands and two chloride anions incispositions coordinate octahedrally to the central SnIVatom. The cohesion of the molecular entities is ensured by the formation of N—H...O, O—H...O, O—H...Cl and N—H...Cl interactions involving cations, anions and the lattice water molecule, giving rise to a layer-like arrangement parallel to (010).
Reduction of tris(benzene-1,2-dithiolate)molybdenum(VI) by hydroxide ions in dry tetrahydrofuran solution.
2001
Tris(benzene-1,2-dithiolate)molybdenum(VI) reacts rapidly and quantitatively with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide to yield the corresponding Mo(V) and Mo(IV) complexes and hydrogen peroxide; the reaction has been executed in dry tetrahydrofuran where the reaction rate shows a fair dependence on complex and OH2 concentrations. Spectrophotometric investigation of the binding of vitamin E to water-containing reversed micelles.
2002
The distribution constants of vitamin E partitioned between apolar organic phase and water-containing reversed micelles of sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), soybean phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) and tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E4) have been evaluated by a spectrophotometric method. The results suggest that in the presence of domains from apolar organic solvent to surfactant and to water, vitamin E is partitioned between the micellar palisade layer and the organic solvent and also that its binding strength to reversed micelles depends mainly by specific interactions between the head group of vitamin E and that of the sur…
