Measurement of elastic forces between iron colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal.
2006
The forces that arise between two iron particles in a nematic liquid crystal with a strong homeotropic anchoring were studied. For the first time, the short range repulsive force resulting from the presence of a hedgehog defect between two particles was precisely determined thanks to application of a small magnetic field and observation of the equilibrium position resulting from the balance between the elastic and magnetic forces. Above a given threshold force, the particles stuck together whereas the hedgehog defect was expelled and transformed into a Saturn ring located between the particles. The attractive part of the interparticle force was determined with the same method on the entire …
Bad News and Quality Reputation among Users of Public Services
2018
This manuexamines whether the effect of anchoring bias is greater when citizens evaluate the quality of a public service after receiving negative initial information about service performance than after receiving positive information. It also tests whether there are differences in this anchoring bias by comparing formal (report) vs. informal (rumor) communication. Two field experiments were conducted with the participation of passengers of a commuter public train transportation organization (Experiment 1, N = 105) and users of a public university administrative service (Experiment 2, N = 172). The first experiment confirmed the bias produced by the negative initial information, whereas this…
Computational modeling of single-versus double-anchoring modes in di-branched organic sensitizers on TiO2 surfaces: structural and electronic propert…
2014
We present a first-principles DFT investigation of the adsorption geometry on the anatase (101) surface of a prototypical di-branched organic dye based on the extended tetrathiafulvalene moiety, incorporating two anchoring cyanoacrylic acid units. Reduced model systems with one and two anchoring groups have been initially studied to investigate the vibrational frequencies related to TiO2 dye adsorption. Our calculations confirm that the reduced systems can be used as reliable models to study the anchoring modes and that the conclusions extracted from the reduced systems can be extrapolated to the entire molecule. A series of molecular structures have been investigated to simulate the anchor…
Features of level broadening in a ring-stub system
2000
When a one dimensional (1D) ring-stub system is coupled to an electron reservoir, the states acquire a width (or broadening characterized by poles in the complex energy plane) due to finite life time effects. We show that this broadening is limited by anti-resonances due to the stub. The differences in level broadening in presence and absence of anti-resonance is exemplified by comparison to a 1D ring coupled to an infinite reservoir. We also show that the anti-resonances due to the stub has an anchoring effect on the poles when a magnetic flux through the ring is varied. This will have implication on change in distribution of the poles in disordered multichannel situation as magnetic flux …

The detrimental consequences for seagrass of ineffective marine park management related to boat anchoring.
2014
Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadows are recognized as priority habitat for conservation by the EU Habitats Directive. The La Maddalena Archipelago National Park (Mediterranean Sea) P. oceanica meadow. , the dominant coastal habitat of the area, is mostly threatened by boat anchoring. 12. years after the establishment of mooring fields and anchoring restrictions, a study was conducted to measure their effectiveness on the conservation of seagrass and the mitigation of anchoring damage. We found that: (i) the condition of P. oceanica was disturbed, both in the mooring fields and in control locations; (ii) mooring fields and anchoring restrictions did not show to be an efficient system for …
Maximizing versus satisficing in the digital age: Disjoint scales and the case for “construct consensus”
2018
Abstract A question facing us today, in the new and rapidly evolving digital age, is whether searching for the best option – being a maximizer – leads to greater happiness and better outcomes than settling on the first good enough option found – or “satisficing.” Answers to this question inform behavioural insights to improve well-being and decision-making in policy and organizational settings. Yet, the answers to this fundamental question of measurement of the happiness of a maximizer versus a satisficer in the current psychological literature are: 1) conflicting; 2) anchored on the use of the first scale published to measure maximization as an individual-difference, and 3) unable to descr…
Enzyme-responsive intracellular-controlled release using silica mesoporous nanoparticles capped with ε-poly-L-lysine.
2014
The synthesis and characterization of two new capped silica mesoporous nanoparticles for controlled delivery purposes are described. Capped hybrid systems consist of MCM-41 nanoparticles functionalized on the outer surface with polymer epsilon-poly-L-lysine by two different anchoring strategies. In both cases, nanoparticles were loaded with model dye molecule [Ru(bipy)(3)](2+). An anchoring strategy involved the random formation of urea bonds by the treatment of propyl isocyanate-functionalized MCM-41 nanoparticles with the lysine amino groups located on the epsilon-poly-L-lysine backbone (solid Ru-rLys-S1). The second strategy involved a specific attachment through the carboxyl terminus of…
Combined Anchoring: Prosecution and defense claims as sequential anchors in the courtroom
2021
Purpose When making judgements under uncertainty not only lay people but also professional judges often rely on heuristics like a numerical anchor (e.g., a numerical sentencing demand) to generate a numerical response. As the prosecution has the privilege to present its demand first, some scholars have speculated about an anchoringbased unfair disadvantage for the defence (who has the last albeit less effective word in court). Despite the plausibility of this reasoning, it is based on a hitherto untested assumption that the first of two sequential anchors exerts a greater influence on a later judgement (a primacy effect). We argue that it is also conceivable that the last word in court h…
Comportement en fatigue thermomécanique à haute température d’un système barrière thermique texturé par laser
2020
In service life of Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) systems for blade applications can be limited by the top-coat (TC) spallation under thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) loadings. To improve its TMF life, laser texturing at the bond-coat/top coat interface in the CMSX-4 Plus / γ-γ’ BC/ EB-PVD TC system has been investigated. Thanks to the study of the laser-matter interaction, it seems that the different Ni-based single crystal superalloys have similar laser ablation behaviors and they present almost no sub-surface damage after ablation. Nevertheless, the formation of melted matter near created cavities, possibly recrystallized, is often observed.Different patterns (holes, lines, grids) have been…
