Molecular structures and vibrations of m-methylaniline in the S0 and S1 states studied by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy and ab initio calcu…

2000

Abstract The UV fluorescence excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra of a jet-cooled m-methylaniline have been obtained for the S1←S0 transition, in which some of the bands have been observed for the first time. The main spectral bands have been assigned by comparison with those of other relevant substituted benzenes. It was found that the spectra exhibit an important feature which is the internal rotation of the methyl group in the electronic ground and excited states. Ab initio calculations at MP2/6-31G* and CIS/6-31G* show that the optimized structure of m-methylaniline in the ground state is not planar with the amino group having sp3 hybridation-like character due to the existence…

Outstandingly robust anodic dehydrogenative aniline coupling reaction

2020

Abstract Oxidative treatment of anilines usually leads to the formation of black polymers, often referred to as “aniline black”. This over-oxidation is hardly controllable and also a challenging task in the anodic conversion of anilines. Here, a quick and efficient access to valuable building blocks by anodic cross- and homo-coupling of aniline and benzidine derivatives is reported. This electrosynthesis is easily performed in a simple undivided cell using constant current conditions. The key to the observed outstanding performance and robustness of this system is attributed to the used solvent 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol. The extraordinary performance over a broad range of current de…

Conformational polymorphism and amphiphilic properties of resorcinarene octapodands

2010

o-Nitroaniline functionalized resorcinarene octapodands 1-5 with pendant methyl, ethyl, pentyl, nonyl or 1-decenyl groups, respectively, were synthesized and their structural properties investigated using X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The upper rim of each podand is identical containing flexible side arms, in which rotation around the -OCH(2)CH(2)N- linkers create excellent possibilities for polymorphism. Two conformational polymorphs of acetone solvate of 2 were identified containing different side arm orientation and crystal packing. Compound 1 crystallized from acetone and nitromethane yielding two pseudopolymorphs with different packing motifs. The longer alkyl chains of 3…

Self-organized nanostructures of poly(4-vinylpyridine), polyaniline and polyamides due to metal complexation

2002

Comb-shaped supramolecules are constructed using flexible polymers and semi-rigid conjugated undoped or doped conjugated polymers upon complexing Zinc dodecyl benzene sulphonate, Zn(DBS) 2 . Self-organized nanostructures are formed in the bulk due to competing attractive interactions (coordination or water mediated hydrogen bonding) and repulsive polar/nonpolar interactions, showing characteristic long periods of ca. 30 A.

Modified Donnan phenomena in polyaniline with poly(vinyl sulphonate) chains

1993

We develop a physical model, based on the modified Donnan phenomena ideas introduced previously by the authors, to describe the acid doping of the conducting polymer polyaniline. The theory is motivated by the experimental work of Asturias et al. [Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. 95, 1381 (1991)]. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found.

In-situ polymerization of polyaniline in radiation functionalized polypropylene films

2015

Abstract In-situ generation of a nanodispersed conductive polymer within a polypropylene matrix has been pursued in order to obtain flexible, conductive films. Radiation grafting of acrylic acid to polypropylene (PP) has been applied to insert carboxyl functionalities on PP. The radiation-grafted films have been further derivatized with a variety of diamines and used as substrates for in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization of polyaniline (PANI). PANI grows as a thin skin from the surface of the film as well as an interpenetrated network in its interiors. Evidence of chemical attachment of PANI to PP has been sought by performing FTIR and XPS analyses after extraction of the unbound polym…

Electrical properties of γ-crosslinked hydrogels incorporating organic conducting polymers

2007

Abstract Hydrogel composites containing nanoparticles of the protonated emeraldine form of polyaniline (PANI-PE) have been synthesised by γ-irradiation, using either polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as steric stabilisers. Swelling behaviour of both hydrogels is reported, together with an electrical characterisation of composites, before and after gel network formation, performed by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. Similarities and differences between the two composite systems are discussed.

Weak non-covalent interactions control the relative molecular orientation in the crystals of N-pentafluorobenzyl aniline derivatives

2010

The crystal structures of N-pentafluorobenzyl aniline derivatives are controlled by versatile aromatic–aromatic interactions between the electron deficient and electron rich aromatics; the parent compound (1) possesses an L shape while protonation (2–5) induces a conformational change resulting in a planar arrangement of molecules which pack in layer type structures with different molecular orientations.

Binding equilibria between beta-cyclodextrin and p-nitro-aniline derivatives: the first systematic study in mixed water-methanol solvent systems.

2009

Abstract Complexation equilibria, in mixed water–methanol solvent media, between native β-cyclodextrin and a set of suitably selected p -nitro-aniline derivatives were studied by means of polarimetry. The effects exerted by the organic co-solvent on the conditional inclusion free energies Δ G cond 0 and the differential molar optical rotations Δ Θ were thoroughly analyzed under the perspective of the enthalpy–entropy compensation effect. Experimental data suggest an intimate participation (‘dynamic co-inclusion’) of solvent molecules in the formation and in the conformational dynamics of the host–guest inclusion complex.

Enhanced spectrophotometric determination of nicotinic acid in a sodium dodecyl sulphate micellar medium.

1994

The spectrophotometric determination of pyridine and pyridine derivatives by means of the König reaction was studied in micellar media of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), N-cetylpyridinium chloride and Triton X-100. The sensitivity was largely increased in SDS micellar medium. The attack of the pyridine ring with cyanogen bromide to produce a glutaconic aldehyde was not affected by the presence of SDS, but the yield of the coupling reaction with an arylamine to produce a polymethine dye was largely increased. In the SDS micellar medium, aniline was superior to other coupling reagents. The limits of detection (LODs) were 6 x 10(-7), 1 x 10(-6) and 5 x 10(-7)M for pyridine, pyrrol-ylmethylpyrid…
