Composition and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oils ofCladanthus arabicusCass. (Asteraceae)

Abstract The chemical composition of the essential oils of the aerial parts (stems and leaves: sample A) and flowers (sample B) of Cladanthus arabicus Cass., were analysed by GC-MS. Monoterpenes hydrocarbons constituted the main chemical group in both essential oils, with Sabinene, β-pinene, α-pinene, myrcene, α-phellandrene and p-cymene as the main compounds. Sample A was tested for its antimicrobial activity against six Gram positive and negative bacteria. Results showed that the oil exhibited a significant antibacterial activity.

AbstractLemon IntegroPectin obtained via hydrodynamic cavitation of waste lemon peel in water only shows high antibacterial activity against two Gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The antibacterial effect against the ubiquitous pathogen P. aeruginosa was evaluated in terms of the minimal bactericidal (MBC) and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). Preliminary insight on the antibacterial mechanism of IntegroPectin originates from investigating its inhibitory activity against E. coli. Donellanic acids A–C: new cyclopropanic oleanane derivatives from Donella ubanguiensis (Sapotaceae)

Abstract Three new cyclopropanic oleanane triterpenoids and ten known compounds were obtained from Donella ubanguiensis using chromatographic methods. The structures were established on the basis of mass spectrometric and NMR data and by comparison with values reported in the literature. The structures of the new compounds were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A part of the isolated compounds was evaluated for cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities.

New antimicrobial metabolites from the medicinal herb Artemisia herba-Alba

Artemisia herba-alba is widely used in traditional medicines for the treatment of several diseases. From the aerial parts organic extract of A. herba-alba, two new compounds, 1,3,8-trihydroxyeudesm-4-en-7α,11βH-12,6α-olide (1) and 5-β-​D-​glucopyranosyloxy​-​7-methoxy-​6H-​benzopyran-​2-​one (2), respectively, together with five known metabolites: 3α,8β-dihydroxygermacr-4(15),9(10)-dien-7β,11αH,12,6α-olide (3), 1β,8α-dihydroxy-11α,13-dihydrobalchanin (4), 11-epiartapshin (5), tomenin (6) and benzoic acid, p-​(β-​D-​glucopyranosyloxy)​-​methyl ester (7), were isolated and identified. Neo-clerodane diterpenoids from Conyza pyrrhopappa Sch.Bip. ex A.Rich

Two hitherto unknown neo-clerodane-type diterpenoids along with twelve known compounds have been isolated from Conyza pyrrhopappa Sch.Bip. ex A.Rich, a medicinal plant traditionally used across tropical Africa to relieve fever. The structures of isolates have been elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic techniques. The crude extract and the isolated compounds were evaluated in the Hela-S3 cell line and in a panel of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) at concentrations up to 50 µg/mL. Antibacterial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis

Background The aim of the present study was to compare in vitro the antimicrobial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis, prior and subsequent to setting. Material and methods Agar diffusion test (ADT) was used for evaluating the antibacterial activity of non-set sealer while the direct contact test (DCT) was used for after setting. Results ADT: Except for TotalFill BC Sealer all the others sealers tested showed antibacterial activity. Meningitis caused by Enterococcus gallinarum after lumbar drainage of cerebrospinal fluid.

We report a rare case of meningitis caused by Enterococcus gallinarum, a bacterium characterized by its ability to express low-level resistance to vancomycin. As in the three other previously reported cases, this one occurred in a patient with a cerebrospinal fluid drainage catheter and properly responded to antimicrobial therapy and removal of the drain.

Antibacterial polypeptides of Lactobacillus species

Twelve of 79 strains of the genus Lactobacillus, mainly isolated from plants or fermenting material, were found to inhibit at least one of the nine indicator strains of the species Lact. brevis, Pediococcus damnosus and Leucanostoc oenos. The antimicrobial activities from Lact. brevis B 37 and Lact. casei B 80 were caused by polypeptides detectable in the culture liquids. They are bacteriocins with a narrow antimicrobial spectrum. Brevicin 37 from Lact. brevis B 37 was active against many lactic acid bacteria and Nocardia corallina, whereas caseicin 80 from Lact. casei B 80 inhibits only one other strain of Lact. casei.
