A purity monitoring system for liquid argon calorimeters

2005

Abstract For liquid argon calorimeters electronegative impurities dissolved in the medium degrade the detector response and deteriorate the energy resolution, especially at high energies. A concept for a purity monitoring system for liquid argon calorimeters has been developed and is presented here. Special combined monitors of 241 Am- and 207 Bi-cells are used to monitor the concentration of impurities. The working principle as well as results from test measurements are discussed.

Neutrino mass ordering at DUNE: An extra ν bonus

2019

We study the possibility of extracting the neutrino mass ordering at the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment using atmospheric neutrinos, which will be available before the muon neutrino beam starts being perational. The large statistics of the atmospheric muon neutrino and antineutrino samples at the far detector, together with the baselines of thousands of kilometers that these atmospheric (anti)neutrinos travel, provide the ideal ingredients to extract the neutrino mass ordering via matter effects in the neutrino propagation through the Earth. Crucially, muon capture by Argon provides excellent charge-tagging, allowing to disentangle the neutrino and antineutrino signature. This …

Large underground, liquid based detectors for astro-particle physics in Europe: scientific case and prospects

2007

This document reports on a series of experimental and theoretical studies conducted to assess the astro-particle physics potential of three future large-scale particle detectors proposed in Europe as next generation underground observatories. The proposed apparatus employ three different and, to some extent, complementary detection techniques: GLACIER (liquid Argon TPC), LENA (liquid scintillator) and MEMPHYS (\WC), based on the use of large mass of liquids as active detection media. The results of these studies are presented along with a critical discussion of the performance attainable by the three proposed approaches coupled to existing or planned underground laboratories, in relation to…

Argon-broadened line parameters in the nu3 band of 12CH4

1997

International audience; Prompted by improved measurements of collisional line shapes in the nu3 band P, Q and R branches of 12CH4, we have performed semi-classical line broadening calculations for methane perturbed by argon. We have used the theoretical approach developed by Robert and Bonamy as an extension of the well-known Anderson-Tsao-Curnutte theory. The semi-classical theory as reformulated here is shown to fully account for the tetrahedral symmetry of methane type molecules. The variation of argon-broadened linewidth coefficients in the nu3 band of 12CH4 with the branch, J, symmetry and energy level fine structure is discussed.

Laboratory astrophysics survey of key x-ray diagnostic lines using a microcalorimeter on an electron beam ion trap

2000

Cosmic plasma conditions created in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) make it possible to simulate the dependencies of key diagnostic X-ray lines on density, temperature, and excitation conditions that exist in astrophysical sources. We used a microcalorimeter for such laboratory astrophysics studies because it has a resolving power ≈1000, quantum efficiency approaching 100%, and a bandwidth that spans the X-ray energies from 0.2 keV to 10 keV. Our microcalorimeter, coupled with an X-ray optic to increase the effective solid angle, provides a significant new capability for laboratory astrophysics measurements. Broadband spectra obtained from the National Institute of Standards and Technology…

The mass-hierarchy and CP-violation discovery reach of the LBNO long-baseline neutrino experiment.

2014

The next generation neutrino observatory proposed by the LBNO collaboration will address fundamental questions in particle and astroparticle physics. The experiment consists of a far detector, in its first stage a 20 kt LAr double phase TPC and a magnetised iron calorimeter, situated at 2300 km from CERN and a near detector based on a high-pressure argon gas TPC. The long baseline provides a unique opportunity to study neutrino flavour oscillations over their 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima exploring the $L/E$ behaviour, and distinguishing effects arising from $\delta_{CP}$ and matter. In this paper we have reevaluated the physics potential of this setup for determining the mass hierarchy (M…

Imaging pore space in tight gas sandstone reservoir: insights from broad ion beam cross-sectioning

2010

Monetization of tight gas reservoirs, which contain significant gas reserves world-wide, represents a challenge for the entire oil and gas industry. The development of new technologies to enhance tight gas reservoir productivity is strongly dependent on an improved understanding of the rock properties and especially the pore framework. Numerous methods are now available to characterize sandstone cores. However, the pore space characterization at pore scale remains difficult due to the fine pore size and delicate sample preparation, and has thus been mostly indirectly inferred until now. Here we propose a new method of ultra high-resolution petrography combining high resolution SEM and argon…

Rovibrational structure of the Ar–CO complex based on a novel three-dimensional ab initio potential

2002

The first three-dimensional ab initio intermolecular potential energy surface of the Ar–CO van der Waals complex is calculated using the coupled cluster singles and doubles including connected triples model and the augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple zeta (aug-cc-pVQZ) basis set extended with a (3s3p2d1f1g) set of midbond functions. The three-dimensional surface is averaged over the three lowest vibrational states of CO. Rovibrational energies are calculated up to 50 cm−1 above the ground state, thus enabling comprehensive comparison between theory and available experimental data as well as providing detailed guidance for future spectroscopic investigations of highe…

5' tRNA halves are highly expressed in the primate hippocampus and might sequence-specifically regulate gene expression

2020

Fragments of mature tRNAs have long been considered as mere degradation products without physiological function. However, recent reports show that tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) play prominent roles in diverse cellular processes across a wide spectrum of species. Contrasting the situation in other small RNA pathways the mechanisms behind these effects appear more diverse, more complex, and are generally less well understood. In addition, surprisingly little is known about the expression profiles of tsRNAs across different tissues and species. Here, we provide an initial overview of tsRNA expression in different species and tissues, revealing very high levels of 5′ tRNA halves (5′ tRHs) pa…
