Loss-of-function mutations in the DJ-1 gene are linked to rare autosomal recessive forms of parkinsonism. In Drosophila, two DJ-1 orthologs have been identified, DJ-1α and DJ-1β. Several studies have shown that DJ-1β mutant flies are viable and fertile but exhibit age-dependent locomotor defects, shortened life span, and enhanced sensitivity to toxins that induce oxidative stress response compared to control flies. We also demonstrated that long-term dietary supplementation with antioxidant compounds was effective at increasing life-span values of DJ-1β mutants. The possible effect of ascorbic acid, citric acid, proteins and phytate on dialysability of Ca, Fe, Zn and Cu in soy-based infant formulas is studied, taking dialysability as a measure of the amount of element available for absorption. Different dialysis percentages for similar element contents in different formulas are found. A regression analysis was applied between Ca, Zn, Cu and Fe dialysis percentages and soy-based formula components to estimate the possible influence of the latter on the dialysability of the elements. Abstract Iron solubility, dialysability and transport and uptake (retention + transport) by Caco-2 cells as indicators of iron availability have been estimated in the in vitro gastrointestinal digests of infant foods (adapted, follow-up and toddler milk-based formulas and fruit juices containing milk and cereals (FMC)). Summary Acetylcholine influenced the radiolabelling of phospholipids in vivo in etiolated hypocotyl tissue of dwarf beans in darkness. Under aerobic conditions the specific activity of the phospholipids was decreased and under anaerobic conditions increased. The biosynthesis of phospholipids was strongly increased by the bivalent cations calcium and manganese and decreased by 2,4-dinitrophenol, anaerobiosis, atropine and ascorbic acid. Magnesium stimulated the uptake of the radioactive phosphate but not the specific activity of the phospholipids. The results are discussed in comparison with the «phospholipid-effect» of acetylcholine in animal tissues.

Abstract The aim of this work was to study the effect of mucilage edible coating extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) on the quality and shelf life maintenance of packaged kiwifruit slices. OFI mucilage alone or added with TWEEN ® 20 were applied on kiwifruit fresh cut surfaces. After treatments, kiwifruit samples were stored under passive atmosphere at 5 ± 1 °C for 3, 5, 7 and 12 days. At each storage period, visual quality and flavor score, pectin content, ascorbic acid and the microbiological characteristics were measured together with CO 2 and O 2 content in the packages. The effects on orange juice batch pasteurization in an improved pilot-scale microwave (MW) oven was evaluated by monitoring pectin methyl-esterase (PME) activity, color, carotenoid compounds and vitamin C content. Trials were performed on stirred orange juice heated at different temperatures (60, 70, 75, and 85 degrees C) during batch process. MW pilot plant allowed real-time temperature control of samples using proportional integrative derivative (PID) techniques based on the infrared thermography temperature read-out.
