Accurate estimation of retinal vessel width using bagged decision trees and an extended multiresolution Hermite model.

We present an algorithm estimating the width of retinal vessels in fundus camera images. The algorithm uses a novel parametric surface model of the cross-sectional intensities of vessels, and ensembles of bagged decision trees to estimate the local width from the parameters of the best-fit surface. We report comparative tests with REVIEW, currently the public database of reference for retinal width estimation, containing 16 images with 193 annotated vessel segments and 5066 profile points annotated manually by three independent experts. The data processing step of complex signals in high-performance liquid chromatography may constitute a bottleneck to obtain significant information from chromatograms. Data pre-processing should be preferably done with little (or no) user supervision, for a maximal benefit and highest speed. In this work, a tool for the configuration of a state-of-the-art baseline subtraction algorithm, called BEADS (Baseline Estimation And Denoising using Sparsity) is developed and verified. The Bi sulfates from the Alfenza Mine, Crodo, Italy: An automatic electron diffraction tomography (ADT) study

We report about three bismuth sulfates from mineralized quartz dikes from Alfenza (Crodo, Italy), two new phases and a rare mineral, cannonite, all growing on bismuthinite. The first new phase occurs as white, "hortensia-like" aggregates of pseudo-hexagonal platelets, with perfect basal cleavage, similar to 20 mu m wide and few micrometers thick. The approximate composition is Bi2O2(SO4), and cell parameters and symmetry, as determined by automatic diffraction tomography, are a = 22.0(4), b = 16.7(3), c = 15.9(3) angstrom, beta = 102.9(5)degrees, space group Pc or P2/c. An ASSOM neural network to describe the action performed by an autonomous reactive agent is proposed. The neural network receives in input the sequences of data acquired by the agent internal sensors and it classifies them by generating the corresponding symbolic assertions. Experimental results performed on a RWI B12 autonomous robot are reported.
An architecture for autonomous agents exploiting conceptual representations

An architecture for autonomous agents is proposed that integrates the functional and the behavioral approaches to robotics. The integration is based on the introduction of a conceptual level, linking together a subconceptual, behavioral, level, and a linguistic level, encompassing symbolic representation and data processing. The proposed architecture is described with reference to an experimental setup, in which the robot task is that of building a significant description of its working environment. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
