Phytochemical profile of three Ballota species essential oils and evaluation of the effects on human cancer cells
2017
Three Ballota species, Ballota undulata, Ballota saxatilis and Ballota nigra ssp. foetida, were investigated for their cytotoxicity against two human cancer cells, hepatoma HepG2 cell line and breast cancer MCF-7 cell line, and for their antioxidant activity. The chemical composition of essential oils was studied by GC and GC–MS. Sesquiterpenes were the main constituents. The most antiproliferative essential oil against HepG2 cells was B. undulata with a percentage of inhibition of 81.36 ± 3.54 at a concentration of 100 μg/mL, while against MCF-7 cells essential oil from B. saxatilis was the most active with a percentage of inhibition of 24.18 ± 1.13 at a concentration of 100 μg/mL. The ant…
Practicing Ballot Secrecy : Postal Voting and the Witness Requirement at the 2019 Finnish Elections
2021
Electoral rights belong to the core of citizenship in democratic nation-states. Voting, then, represents an actualization of the relationship between the citizen and the political community. For citizens living outside the country in which they are eligible to vote, voting signifies a rare institutional connection to the country of origin. The aim of this article is to explore the introduction of the postal vote, a new form of voting for external voters at Finnish elections, from the grassroots perspective. The study focuses on how a central policy concern, safeguarding ballot secrecy, was resolved in the policy implementation by the witness requirement, and how the individual voters subseq…

Endovascular Treatment with Drug-Eluting Balloon for Severe Subclavian Artery Stenosis Involving the Origin of the Vertebral Artery
2020
The first line approach for subclavian steal syndrome is PTA-stenting of subclavian artery. When the ipsilateral vertebral artery origin is involved or in closed proximity of the atherosclerotic lesion in the subclavian artery PTA-stenting is at risk of ipsilateral vertebral artery coverage. Herein we report our experience with DEB to address lesions involving the subclavian artery and the origin of the ipsilateral vertebral artery. From January 2017 to February 2019, patients presenting subclavian artery lesion involving the origin of the ipsilateral vertebral artery and treated using primary DEB, were included. Three patients, with left subclavian steal syndrome, were identified. The peri…
From detail to project: House Caiozzo-Facciola
2021
The analysis and understanding, through drawing, of Casa Cajozzo-Facciolà, designed by Pasquale Culotta and Giuseppe Leone, in 1979, on a cliff in Contrada Ogliastrillo in Cefalù, followed a pro- cess that is unlike the traditional process. From the consideration that the detail is thought of as a portion of a whole, which allows, through a close examination, to re-read the global system from which it was provisionally extracted, we proceeded with the analysis of the expected construction system, the balloon frame, and thanks to a close examination of the construction details of which there were sketches with explanatory notes, the proportions, spaces, volumes, surface treatment of the over…
The Egalitarian Quality of Lottocracy
2019
Abstract. Recently, political models which employ lottery-selection instead of ballot voting have been proposed. Proponents argue that such lottocratic models can improve the representation of the population and reduce undemocratic influences. In this paper, I argue that these proposals also satisfy the egalitarian requirement of democracy. I claim that having an equal chance to be selected by lot is equally egalitarian as having an equally weighed vote for two reasons: first, having a chance to be selected by lot satisfies the requirement for political justice better than electoral democracy and second, it provides citizens with equal political influence and not merely equal impac…

Interrelationship between reproductive hormones and acute phase proteins during estrous cycle and pregnancy in Spanish purebred broodmares
2021
Highlights • Steroid hormones and acute phase proteins in cyclic and pregnant mares were evaluated. • SAA and CRP did not discriminate cyclic and pregnant mares. • Pregnancy induced a limited acute phase response in Spanish purebred mares. • SAA, Hp and CRP were independent of E1 and P4 dynamics during pregnancy.
A Single-Center Experience on Below-The-Knee Endovascular Treatment in Diabetic Patients
2020
Diabetic ulceration of the foot is a major global medical, social and economic problem and is the most frequent end-point of diabetic complications. A retrospective analysis from February 2017 to May 2019 of diabetic patients presenting below-the-knee artery disease (PAD) was carried out. Only patients treated with endovascular techniques as first choice treatment were evaluated. Outcome measured was perioperative mortality and morbidity. Freedom from occlusion, secondary patency and amputation rate were all registered. Additional maneuvers including stenting or angioplasty with drug eluting balloon (DEB) were reported. A total of 167 (101 male/66 female) patients with a mean age of 71 year…
Endovascular treatment for chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency: is the procedure safe?
2010
Objectives The aim of this report is to assess the safety of endovascular treatment for chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). Although balloon angioplasty and stenting seem to be safe procedures, there are currently no data on the treatment of a large group of patients with this vascular pathology. Methods A total of 564 endovascular procedures (balloon angioplasty or, if this procedure failed, stenting) were performed during 344 interventions in 331 CCSVI patients with associated multiple sclerosis. Results Balloon angioplasty alone was performed in 192 cases (55.8%), whereas the stenting of at least one vein was required in the remaining 152 cases (44.2%). There were no majo…
