A New Aromatic Compound from the Stem Bark of Terminalia catappa

A new aromatic compound 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-1- O-(4-sulfo)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), in addition to two triterpenoid saponins (chebuloside II, arjunoglucoside II), two triterpenes (arjunolic acid and 3-betulinic acid) and sitosterol-3- O-β-D-glucopyranoside have been isolated from the barks of Terminalia catappa. Their structures have been established on the basis of spectroscopic techniques (1D/2D NMR) and MS. Their cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activity, together with the antioxidant capacity of compound 1 were also evaluated.

Triterpenoid Saponins From the Stem Bark of Pentaclethra eetveldeana

Two previously undescribed triterpenoid saponins together with 4 known ones were isolated from the stem bark of Pentaclethra eetveldeana De Wild. & Th. Dur. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR experiments in combination with mass spectrometry as 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-α-L-arabinopyranosyloleanolic acid and 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-α-L-arabinopyranosylhederagenin.

Spirostane-Type Saponins from Dracaena fragrans Yellow Coast

Three steroidal glycosides were isolated from the bark of Dracaena fragrans (L.) Ker Gawl. « Yellow Coast », and a fourth from the roots and the leaves. Their structures were characterized on the basis of extensive 1D and 2D NMR experiments and mass spectrometry, and by comparison with NMR data of the literature. These saponins have the spirostane-type skeleton and are reported in this species for the first time.

Two undescribed triterpenoid saponins together with 5 known ones were isolated from the root bark of Haplocoelum congolanum Hauman. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including one-dimensional and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in combination with mass spectrometry as 3- O-(4- O-[3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl])-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-α-l-arabinopyranosyloleanolic acid and 3- O-α-l-arabinofuranosyl-(1→3)-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-α-l-arabinopyranosyloleanolic acid.

Preparation of 7-Alkoxylated Furanopyrones:  Semisynthesis of (−)-Etharvensin, a New Styryl-Lactone from Goniothalamus arvensis

A new furanopyrone derivative, (−)-etharvensin (1), was isolated from the stem bark of Goniothalamus arvensis. Semisynthesis of the 7-ethoxyfuranopyrone 1 was achieved by addition of EtOH in concentrated acid medium to the unsaturated α-pyrone (+)-altholactone (2). This protocol constitutes a novel, direct (single-step), and efficient method to prepare this class of bioactive compounds.

The In-Medium \barK NInteraction within a Chiral Unitary Approach

The s- and p-wave contributions to the $\bar K N$ interaction in dense nuclear matter are obtained using a chiral unitary approach. We perform a self-consistent calculation of the $\bar K$ self-energy including Pauli blocking effects, meson self-energies modified by short-range correlations and baryon binding potentials. We find that the on-shell factorization cannot be applied to evaluate the in-medium corrections to p-wave amplitudes. Furthermore, the $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ develop a mass shift of -30 MeV at saturation density while the $\Sigma^*$ width increases to 80 MeV. We conclude that no deep and narrow $\bar K$ bound states could be observed.

Antiviral activity has been demonstrated for different tannin-rich plant extracts. Since tannins of different classes and molecular weights are often found together in plant extracts and may differ in their antiviral activity, we have compared the effect against influenza A virus (IAV) of Hamamelis virginiana L. bark extract, fractions enriched in tannins of different molecular weights and individual tannins of defined structures, including pseudotannins. We demonstrate antiviral activity of the bark extract against different IAV strains, including the recently emerged H7N9, and show for the first time that a tannin-rich extract inhibits human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 infection. Abrupt Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE in Europe - The event ecology, possible causes and implications

The study, based on the examination of 70 published and unpublished pollen profiles from Poland and supplementary data from the surrounding regions, shows that an abrupt, episodic Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE was a much more widespread event than has been previously reported, spanning large areas of the temperate and boreal zones in Europe. The data from Poland suggest that the decline was roughly synchronous and most likely occurred between the 9th and 10th centuries, with strong indications for the 10th century. Assessment of the possibility of using deciduous tree bark as a biomonitor of heavy metal pollution of atmospheric aerosol

The aim of the research was to assess the possibility to use deciduous tree bark in the biomonitoring of urban areas. The tree bark taken from various deciduous tree species growing in the Opole Province (south-western Poland) was used for the research. The bark was collected from tree trunks in the period of June 2–26, 2017. Concentrations of the heavy metals were determined in the barks by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS).
