In situ activity of a bacteriocin-producing Lactococcus lactis strain. Influence on the interactions between lactic acid bacteria during sourdough fe…

2005

Aims:  To biochemically characterize the bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis M30 and demonstrate its effect on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) during sourdough propagation. Methods and Results:  A two-peptide bacteriocin produced by L. lactis ssp. lactis M30 was purified by ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction and reversed phase chromatography. Mass spectrometry of the two peptides and sequence analysis of the ltnA2 gene showed that the bacteriocin was almost identical to lacticin 3147. During a 20-day period of sourdough propagation the stability of L. lactis M30 was demonstrated, with concomitant inhibition of the indicator strain Lactobacillus plantarum 20, as well as the …

Rapid differentiation and in situ detection of 16 sourdough lactobacillus species by multiplex PCR.

2005

ABSTRACT A two-step multiplex PCR-based method was designed for the rapid detection of 16 species of lactobacilli known to be commonly present in sourdough. The first step of multiplex PCR was developed with a mixture of group-specific primers, while the second step included three multiplex PCR assays with a mixture of species-specific primers. Primers were derived from sequences that specify the 16S rRNA, the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region, and part of the 23S rRNA gene. The primer pairs designed were shown to exclusively amplify the targeted rrn operon fragment of the corresponding species. Due to the reliability of simultaneously identifying Lactobacillus plantarum , Lactobacillus…

SURATRAM - Intelligent Transport System for freight management in urban areas

2022

The project developed in the framework of this thesis is part of a more global and ambitious research program that aims at proposing a new type of goods management system in urban centers. In order to do so, the project aims to approach the management of goods from a systemic point of view, by integrating the management into the field of Intelligent Goods Transport Systems (ITS). This systemic vision of the management of goods in urban areas requires the use of electric and autonomous vehicles to ensure the tasks of delivery and collection of goods. In addition, these vehicles will be able to use the existing public transport network of the cities to move from an urban distribution center (…

An Innovative Conversion Device to the Grid Interface of Combined RES-Based Generators and Electric Storage Systems

2015

This paper is focused on the development of an innovative device, which is based on a bidirectional converter, for the interface to the supply utility grid of combined renewable-energy-source-based generators and electric storage systems. The device can be controlled so as to ease the interface between the low-voltage grid and photovoltaic or wind generators combined with lithium-ion $\hbox{LiFePO}_{4} $ batteries, taking into account the requirements of the reference technical standards for users connection and offering different ancillary services. The operational functioning of the device, the architecture, and its electronic components, as well as laboratory and field test activities an…

A comparison of two innovative customer power devices for Smart Micro-Grids

2015

The paper presents a comparison of two prototypes of innovative Customer Power Devices designed for applications in Smart Micro-Grids. The devices are both equipped with Energy Storage Systems, consisting in Lithium batteries and have been assembled, independently, by the DIAEE of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and the DEIM of the University of Palermo in collaboration with the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). In the paper, the characteristics and the operating modes of the devices are examined and some consideration on their application in Low Voltage Smart Micro-Grids are provided. © 2015 IEEE.

Assessing the Electrochemical Performance of Different Nanostructured CeO2 Samples as Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

2021

In this work, six samples of CeO2 are successfully prepared by diverse synthesis routes leading to different microstructures regarding both morphology and particle size. The structural and microstructural characteristics presented by the samples and their influence on the electrochemical response of the prepared anodes are analyzed. In particular, the Ce-CMK3 sample, synthesized from a mesoporous carbon obtained through a CMK3 silica template, displays an enhanced electrochemical response. Thus, capacity values of ~220 mA h g−1 are obtained at a current rate of 0.155 A g−1 after 50 cycles and an excellent cyclability at intermediate current densities. On the other hand, it is observed that …

THE USE OF LACTOBACILLUS PENTOSUS 1MO TO SHORTEN THE DEBITTERING PROCESS TIME OF BLACK TABLE OLIVES (CV. ITRANA AND LECCINO): A PILOT-SCALE APPLICATI…

2006

Fifty lactobacilli isolated from black table olive brines were evaluated for their salt tolerance, resistance to oleuropein and verbascoside, and ability to grow in modified filter-sterilized brines. A strain of Lactobacillus pentosus was selected and used as a starter to ferment, in pilot plant, black olives (Itrana and Leccino cv.) in brines modified for pH, carbohydrate, and growth factor concentrations, at 28 degrees C. The temperature-controlled fermentation of Leccino cv. olives resulted in obtaining ready-to-eat, high-quality table olives in a reduced-time process. HPLC analysis of phenolic compounds from fermented olives showed a decrease of oleuropein, a glucoside secoiridoid respo…

STRATEGIE PER IL MIGLIORAMENTO DELLA PRODUZIONE E LO SVILUPPO DI MOLECOLE AD ATTIVITÀ ANTIBIOTICA DI ORIGINE NATURALE O DI SINTESI CHIMICA

The emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial strains is an urgent problem derived from the widespread and uncontrolled use of antibiotics. Therefore, new arrays of lead compounds exerting antimicrobial activity are necessary to contrast the spreading of MDR pathogens. Between 1980 and 2003, the interest in scientific research programs aimed to the new drug discovery by large pharmaceutical companies progressively decreased due to increasing costs in the respect of i) the low discovery rate of new leads, ii) the small amounts of product recovery needing process optimization and, finally, iii) regulatory obstacles associated with long-lasting pre-clinical and clinical trials for ther…

Identification of subdominant sourdough lactic acid bacteria and their evolution during laboratory-scale fermentations

2007

Abstract Presumptive lactic acid bacterial cocci were found in six sourdoughs (out of 20) from the Abruzzo region (central Italy) and subjected to phenotypic and genotypic characterization. A total of 21 isolates, recognized as seven strains by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)–polymerase chain reaction (PCR) typing, were identified by a polyphasic approach, consisting of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, multiplex PCR assays and physiological features, as Enterococcus faecium and Pediococcus pentosaceus. Four strains belonging to those species and previously isolated from wheat kernels were inoculated in sterile flour to verify their capacity to grow in sourdough environment. Doughs with s…

Dynamic Modeling and Driving Cycle Prediction for a Racing Series Hybrid Car

2014

International audience; This paper presents Noao, a plug-in series hybrid racing car equipped with an engine/generator set as range extender. To determine the velocity profile, i.e., performance of the car and its power profile, a dynamic model for this car is developed using pedal position as input. This value is easy to measure, representative for race cycles, and presents a novelty. The model is validated with the results from experiments. An analysis based on the map of Magny-Cours racing circuit and drivers pedal action on certain zones of the circuit is formulated and is used as a prediction tool to determine drivers inputs on other racing circuits and generate driving schedules. The …
