The potato tuber moth is susceptible to at least three insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) from Bacillus thuringiensis: CrylA(b), CrylB, and CrylC. To design useful combinations of toxin genes either in transgenic plants or in new genetically modified B. thuringiensis strains, it is necessary to determine the binding characteristics of the different ICPs so as not to combine a pair sharing the same binding site. The structure of odd-A 115,117Rh and 115,117Pd isotopes is studied by means of the neutron-proton interacting boson-fermion model (IBFM-2). JP=12+ quantum number assignment for the 115,117Pd ground states is critically discussed and the predicted energy levels are compared to the existing experimental data. The resulting nuclear wave functions are used to compute the β-decay ft values of the transitions from 115,117Rh to 115,117Pd in the microscopic IBFM-2 and the results compared with the data. peerReviewed
Odorant-binding protein-based optoelectronic tongue and nose for sensing volatile organic compounds

International audience; We developed an array of odorant-binding protein mutants with various binding properties. The same design is suitable for the detection and identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) both in the liquid phase and in the gas phase by surface plasmon resonance imaging. The obtained optoelectronic tongue is highly selective at low concentrations of VOCs with a low detection limit, but a narrow linear range. In comparison, the optoelectronic nose gives a much higher signal to noise ratio, but the discrimination of VOCs from different chemical classes requires kinetic data to get rid of non-specific signals. Resveratrol shows beneficial effects in inflammation-based diseases like cancer, cardiovascular and chronic inflammatory diseases. Therefore, the molecular mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory resveratrol effects deserve more attention. In human epithelial DLD-1 and monocytic Mono Mac 6 cells resveratrol decreased the expression of iNOS, IL-8 and TNF-α by reducing mRNA stability without inhibition of the promoter activity. Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa and Cry3Ca proteins have been reported to be toxic against the African sweetpotato pest Cylas puncticollis. In the present work, the binding sites of these proteins in C. puncticollis brush border vesicles suggest the occurrence of different binding sites, but only one of them is shared. Our results suggest that pest resistance mediated by alteration of the shared Cry-receptor binding site might not render both Cry proteins ineffective.

Mesenchymal cells in the developing pancreas express the neural stem cell marker nestin and the transcription factor islet-1 (Isl-1). Using defined culture conditions we isolated on a single cell basis nestin producing cells from human pancreatic islets. These cells were immortalized with lentiviral vectors coding for telomerase and mBmi. They are positive for Isl-1 and nestin and have the potential to adopt a pancreatic endocrine phenotype with expression of critical transcription factors including Ipf-1, Isl-1, Ngn-3, Pax4, Pax6, Nkx2.2, and Nkx6.1 as well as the islet hormones insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin. Electron microscopic immunogold cytochemistry reveals chromogranin A confined to secretory granules of porcine Merkel cells

By ultrastructural immunohistochemistry using the immunogold technique, immunoreactive (ir) Chromogranin A (CGA) was found to be confined to the secretory vesicles of porcine Merkel cells. CGA was present predominantly in the periphery of the electron-dense core and on the clear halo. These findings indicate that CGA is a regular constituent of Merkel cell secretory granules but probably not exclusively responsible for their electron opacity.
