Effectiveness of oral N -acetylcysteine in a rat experimental model of asthma

2002

Oxidative stress appears to be relevant to asthma pathogenesis. Therefore, the effectiveness of the antioxidant N -acetylcysteine was examined on antigen-induced pulmonary responses in sensitized Brown-Norway rats. N -acetylcysteine (oral, 1 mmol kg(-1)per day for 7 days before challenge) did not reduce the immediate bronchospasm that followed aerosol antigen exposure but prevented airway hyperreactivity to 5-hydroxytryptamine at 24 h after antigen challenge, and reduced the eosinophils (from 0.178 +/- 0.038 in the absence to 0.064 +/- 0.020 x10(6)cells ml(-1)in the presence of N -acetylcysteine;P< 0.05), and Evans blue dye extravasation in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Neuroprotection by erythropoietin administration after experimental traumatic brain injury.

2007

A large body of evidence indicates that the hormone erythropoietin (EPO) exerts beneficial effects in the central nervous system (CNS). To date, EPO's effect has been assessed in several experimental models of brain and spinal cord injury. This study was conducted to validate whether treatment with recombinant human EPO (rHuEPO) would limit the extent of injury following experimental TBI. Experimental TBI was induced in rats by a cryogenic injury model. rHuEPO or placebo was injected intraperitoneally immediately after the injury and then every 8 h until 2 or 14 days. Forty-eight hours after injury brain water content, an indicator of brain edema, was measured with the wet-dry method and bl…

NMDA receptor antagonist felbamate reduces behavioral deficits and blood-brain barrier permeability changes after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhag…

2007

Increased levels of glutamate and aspartate have been detected after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) that correlate with neurological status. The NMDA receptor antagonist felbamate (FBM; 2-phenyl-1,3-propanediol dicarbamate) is an anti-epileptic drug that elicits neuroprotective effects in different experimental models of hypoxia-ischemia. The aim of this dose-response study was to evaluate the effect of FBM after experimental SAH in rats on (1) behavioral deficits (employing a battery of assessment tasks days 1-5 post-injury) and (2) blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability changes (quantifying microvascular alterations according to the extravasation of protein-bound Evans Blue by a spectropho…

Low-temperature growth of n ++-GaN by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition to achieve low-resistivity tunnel junctions on blue light emitting diodes

2018

We report on low-resistivity GaN tunnel junctions (TJ) on blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Si-doped n ++-GaN layers are grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition directly on LED epiwafers. Low growth temperature (<800 °C) was used to hinder Mg-passivation by hydrogen in the p ++-GaN top surface. This allows achieving low-resistivity TJs without the need for post-growth Mg activation. TJs are further improved by inserting a 5 nm thick In0.15Ga0.85N interlayer (IL) within the GaN TJ thanks to piezoelectric polarization induced band bending. Eventually, the impact of InGaN IL on the internal quantum efficiency of blue LEDs is discussed.

Effect of PCL/PEG-Based Membranes on Actinorhodin Production in Streptomyces coelicolor Cultivations

2015

The actinomycetes, Gram-positive filamentous bacteria, are the most prolific source of natural occurring antibiotics. At an industrial level, antibiotics from actinomycete strains are produced by means of submerged fermentations, where one of the major factors negatively affecting bioproductivity is the pellet-shaped biomass growth. The immobilization of microorganisms on properly chosen supports prevents cell-cell aggregation resulting in improving the biosynthetic capability. Thus, novel porous biopolymer-based devices are developed by combining melt mixing and particulate leaching. In particular, polycaprolactone (PCL), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and sodium chloride (NaCl) with different…

Blue light mediated C–H arylation of heteroarenes using TiO2as an immobilized photocatalyst in a continuous-flow microreactor

2017

Titanium dioxide was applied as an immobilized photocatalyst in a microstructured falling film reactor for the continuous-flow C-H arylation of heteroarenes with aryldiazonium salts as the starting material. Detailed investigations of the catalyst and a successful long-term run proved its excellent usability for this process. Very good yields up to 99% were achieved with broad substrate scope and were compared with batch synthesis. The transfer to the continuous-flow mode revealed an impressive boost in reactor performance solely resulting from the improved irradiation and contact of the catalyst, substrate and light.

Ambipolar Phosphine Derivatives to Attain True Blue OLEDs with 6.5% EQE

2016

A family of new branched phosphine derivatives {Ph2N-(C6H4)n-}3P → E (E = O 1-3, n = 1-3; E = S 4-6, n = 1-3; E = Se 7-9, n = 1-3; E = AuC6F5 4-6, n = 1-3), which are the donor-acceptor type molecules, exhibit efficient deep blue room temperature fluorescence (λem = 403-483 nm in CH2Cl2 solution, λem = 400-469 nm in the solid state). Fine tuning the emission characteristics can be achieved varying the length of aromatic oligophenylene bridge -(C6H4)n-. The pyramidal geometry of central R3P → E fragment on the one hand disrupts π-conjugation between the branches to preserve blue luminescence and high triplet energy, while on the other hand provides amorphous materials to prevent excimer form…

CROSSLINKED HYALURONAN WITH A PROTEIN-LIKE POLYMER: NOVEL BIORESORBABLE FILMS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS

2007

In this work, novel hydrogel films based on hyaluronan (HA) chemically crosslinked with the alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl) (2-aminoethylcarbamate)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA-EDA) were produced by solution casting method. The goal was to exploit both the biological key role of HA in tissue repair and regeneration, and the versatility of a synthetic protein-like polymer as the PHEA-EDA, in order to obtain biomaterials with physicochemical and biological properties suitable for a clinical use. By varying the molar ratio between the PHEA-EDA amino groups and HA carboxyl groups, three different films were obtained and characterized. Particularly FTIR, swelling, hydrolysis, and enzymatic degradatio…

Strain effects and phonon-plasmon coupled modes in Si-doped AlN

2009

The E 2h and A 1 (LO) phonon modes of AlN films grown on sapphire are analyzed by Raman scattering as a function of silicon doping for concentrations covering from 5.5 x 10 19 cm ―3 to 5.2 x 10 21 cm ―3 . For high doping levels the appearance of a mode around 520 cm ―1 indicates the precipitation of crystalline silicon in the samples and its inhomogeneous incorporation to the AlN layer. The frequency of this mode shifts to lower energies with doping, indicating that the silicon crystals are embedded in the AlN lattice and under tensile strain. On the other hand, the AlN phonon modes are blue-shifted due to the compressive strain as a result of the silicon incorporation. This strain is parti…
