Synthesis of tumor-associated glycopeptide antigens for the development of tumor-selective vaccines

In contrast to normal cells, the glycoprotein profile on epithelial tumor cells is distinctly altered. Due to an incomplete formation of the glycan side-chains resulting from a premature sialylation, additional peptide epitopes become accessible to the immune system in mucin-type glycoproteins on tumor cells. These tumor-associated structure alterations constitute the basis for a selective immunological attack on cancer cells. Initial steps of wall protoplast regeneration in Candida albicans

Summary Cell wall regeneration of individual Candida albicans yeast and mycelial protoplasts was studied with confocal and electron microscopy using polyclonal antibodies and leetins. Quantitative measurements of the fluorescence emitted by individual protoplasts during the process of regeneration indicate that chitin is the first polymer to be laid down, whereas β(1,3)- and β(1,6)glucan are incorporated at a later stage. Release of macromolecules by Saccharomyces cerevisiae during ageing of French flor sherry wine “Vin jaune”

The French flor sherry wine "Vin jaune" spends 6 years and 3 months in the same barrel under a yeast velum. Because of temperature variations in the cellars, this velum sinks partially into the wine and a deposit of dead yeasts cells accumulates in the bottom of the barrels, favouring the formation of new velum. Growth and autolysis occur simultaneously. This study investigated the evolution of macromolecules released by yeasts during the ageing of "Vin jaune" in a model system closely simulating winemaking. Photo-Cross-Linked Hydrogels with Polysaccharide−Poly(amino acid) Structure:  New Biomaterials for Pharmaceutical Applications

The aim of this work has been the preparation and characterization of novel hydrogels with polysaccharide-poly(amino acid) structure having suitable physicochemical properties for pharmaceutical applications. In the first step, hyaluronic acid (HA) and alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) have been derivatized with methacrylic anhydride (AMA), thus obtaining HA-AMA and PHM derivatives, respectively. In the second step, aqueous solutions of both these derivatives have been irradiated at 313 nm to obtain chemical hydrogels. ADR1 and SNF1 Mediate Different Mechanisms in Transcriptional Regulation of Yeast POT1 Gene

We studied the consequences of adr1 and snf1 mutations on POT1 gene expression in different growth conditions. The results obtained reveal that ADR1 and SNF1 genes affect POT1 transcription in different ways: ADR1 has a minor role in derepression in low concentration of glucose but is essential for activation in stationary phase whereas SNF1 is essential for derepression and activation, although it does not seem to be directly involved in the molecular mechanism of activation in stationary phase.
