A Network-Based Framework for Mobile Threat Detection

2018

Mobile malware attacks increased three folds in the past few years and continued to expand with the growing number of mobile users. Adversary uses a variety of evasion techniques to avoid detection by traditional systems, which increase the diversity of malicious applications. Thus, there is a need for an intelligent system that copes with this issue. This paper proposes a machine learning (ML) based framework to counter rapid evolution of mobile threats. This model is based on flow-based features, that will work on the network side. This model is designed with adversarial input in mind. The model uses 40 timebased network flow features, extracted from the real-time traffic of malicious and…

DOBRO : a prediction error correcting robot under drifts

2016

We propose DOBRO, a light online learning module, which is equipped with a smart correction policy helping making decision to correct or not the given prediction depending on how likely the correction will lead to a better prediction performance. DOBRO is a standalone module requiring nothing more than a time series of prediction errors and it is flexible to be integrated into any black-box model to improve its performance under drifts. We performed evaluation in a real-world application with bus arrival time prediction problem. The obtained results show that DOBRO improved prediction performance significantly meanwhile it did not hurt the accuracy when drift does not happen.

Rehearsing to control depressive symptoms through a behavior change support system

2013

Depressive symptoms are generally coupled with distress and high treatment costs. We present our on-going research on a Web-based behavior change support system, which utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as a rehearsal tool. We present a summarized account of the research setting, studied persuasive software features, and a brief account of initial data analysis. Our work presents implications on design interventions for mental well-being and human-computer interaction.

Interactive map interface for controlling bridge crane automation A cognitive-affective approach

2016

This study outlines the development process of a new touch screen based user interface for controlling bridge crane automation in industrial environments. A user study of existing situation (n1 = 11) was used to develop an understanding of the cognitive and emotional design goals for crane operation. Conceptualization of these goals in the context of automation produced a set of requirements, which were used to develop a map-based touch screen user interface. Two field tests (n2 = 5, n3 = 5) revealed how bridge crane operators cognise and emotionally experience the increasing automation and how the user interface should be designed to support the operator’s spatial mental representation as …

Enhancing the experience of online users of open education

2014

The limited adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) has kicked off the launch of several projects to search for possible solutions. One of these projects is “Open Educational Ideas and Innovations” (OEI2). The goal of this project is to find alternatives for increasing the uptake of OER and facilitating the collaborative development of OER. To enhance the experience of the users of open education, we interviewed twelve educators and researchers from different higher education institutions across Europe focusing on gathering insights about idea sharing experiences. In this paper, we present our key findings based on these interviews and outline some recommendations for our next open edu…

User experience targets as design drivers:A case study on the development of a remote crane operator station

2013

In recent years, the notion of user experience, or UX, as an essential aspect to be addressed in the design and development of technologies has been increasingly discussed. In this paper, we present a case study in which we have used UX targets as the main design drivers and focus areas in developing a new remote operator station user interface for container cranes. UX targets describe the experiential qualities to which the product design should aim at. However, taking UX targets into consideration during product design is challenging, because only little is known about how they would be best operationalized to serve the different phases of the design process. Through our case study, we de…

How older and younger people see technology in Northern and Southern Europe : Closing the generation gap

2016

Background Mental representations of technology can be affected by many social and biological factors. The aim of this study was to test the effects of two of these factors, age and culture, on how people mentally represent and experience technologies by comparing the conceptions of old and young people in Spain and Finland. Both Spain and Finland are European countries, but they are historically, geographically, and culturally very different. Method The study is framed within the life-based design (LBD) paradigm, where culture and age interact to define particular forms of life in which technology might be used and perceived differently. We hypothesised that there are differences in the me…

Mobile Banking Services Continuous Usage -- Case Study of Finland

2016

Finland is at the forefront of using new information systems, such as mobile banking (m-banking). The present study develops and tests a model of continuous usage intentions toward m-banking services for a sample of 273 Finnish m-banking users. Results confirm the hypothesized direct relationships between self-congruence and perceived value, perceived risk and perceived value, perceived value and continuous usage, and continuous usage and word of mouth. The frequency of usage of m-banking services and experience moderate the relationship between perceived value and continuous usage. We discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of the study results and present recommendations for f…

Depth perception in tablet-based augmented reality at medium- and far-field distances

2013

Current augmented reality (AR) systems often fail to indicate the distance between the user and points of interest in the environment. Empirical evaluations of human depth perception in AR settings compared to real world settings are needed. Our goal in this study was to understand tablet-based AR depth perception by comparing it with real-world depth perception.

Evaluating the performance of artificial neural networks for the classification of freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates

2014

Abstract Macroinvertebrates form an important functional component of aquatic ecosystems. Their ability to indicate various types of anthropogenic stressors is widely recognized which has made them an integral component of freshwater biomonitoring. The use of macroinvertebrates in biomonitoring is dependent on manual taxa identification which is currently a time-consuming and cost-intensive process conducted by highly trained taxonomical experts. Automated taxa identification of macroinvertebrates is a relatively recent research development. Previous studies have displayed great potential for solutions to this demanding data mining application. In this research we have a collection of 1350 …
