Helicobacter pyloriinfection is not involved in the pathogenesis of either erosive or non-erosive gastro-oesophageal reflux disease

2003

Summary Background : The majority of reflux patients have non-erosive reflux disease. Aim : To evaluate the influence of Helicobacter pylori on oesophageal acid exposure in patients with both non-erosive and erosive reflux disease and in a group of controls. The pattern and distribution of chronic gastritis were also assessed. Methods : One hundred and twelve consecutive patients with symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease agreed to undergo both upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and 24-h oesophageal pH-metry. Patients were grouped as H. pylori-positive or H. pylori-negative on the basis of both CLO-test and histology, and as cases with or without oesophagitis on the basis of endoscopy…

Interferon-α for chronic hepatitis C: An analysis of pretreatment clinical predictors of response

1994

To identify predictors of short-term and sustained ALT normalization after interferon treatment in adult patients with chronic hepatitis C, we performed a metanalysis of individual patients'data, with construction and cross-validation of a prediction rule, in 361 patients from two randomized trials. In one trial, 116 subjects with transfusion-related chronic hepatitis C were treated with lymphoblastoid interferon (5 MU/m 2 three times a week for 2 mo, then 3 MU/m 2 three times a week for 4 or 10 mo)

Real life data on elbasvir/grazoprevir efficacy, safety and drug-drug interaction profile in patients with chronic hepatitis C viral infection: a pro…

2019

Introduction: In a previous study, based on PITER cohort data, it was reported that of patients, undergoing direct acting antiviral (DAA) therapy, 30%-44%, are at risk of potential drug-drug interactions (DDI). Aim: We aimed to evaluate the prospective profile of elbasvir/grazoprevir (EBR/GZR) efficacy and safety combined with real life comedication profile. Method: Data from 312 patients (mean age 63 ± 10 years; 44% male, 90% of genotype 1.85% fibrosis stage ≤ F3, 15% with child A cirrhosis), enrolled in PITER by 15 clinical centers and treated with EBR/GZR, with at least three months of follow up after the end of treatment, were evaluated. Comedication profiles (no changes, drugs interrup…

all the steatosis grades, except S2 vs S3. The diagnostic performances of CAP in quantifying each steatosis grade was: for S ≥1 AUC=0.813 (cutoff 260dB/m, Se = 64.84%, Sp =87.27%, PPV=80.8%, NPV=75%, +LR =5.09, −LR =0.40, DA=76.11%); for S ≥2 AUC=0.822 (cutoff 285dB/m, Se = 69.70%, Sp =85.12%, PPV=47.9%, NPV=93.5%, +LR =4.68, −LR =0.36, DA=82.08%); for S ≥3 AUC=0.838 (cutoff 294dB/m, Se =83.33%, Sp =82.54%, PPV=23.3%, NPV=98.7%, +LR =4.77, −LR =0.20, DA=81.59%). AUCs calculated between two steatosis grades only were: 0.772 (for S0 vs S1), 0.874 (S0 vs S2), 0.904 (S0 vs S3), 0.659 (S1 vs S2), 0.777 (S1 vs S3), and 0.665 (S2 vs S3) respectively. Conclusions: Maximal diagnostic accuracy could …

Screening for celiac disease in patients with chronic liver disease

2003

Dear Sir:We read with interest the paper of Kaukinen et al. reporting anelevated frequency of celiac disease (CD) (4.3%) in patients with previousliver transplantation due to severe hepatic dysfunction.1However, wewould like to report our experience of the serologic assays for CDdiagnosis in patients with chronic liver disease and comment on thescreening methods for CD used in that study. Between January andOctober 2001, we studied 96 consecutive subjects (65 male, 31 female, age range 18–87 years, median 42) with chronic hypertransaminasemiawho were attending for thefirst time the outpatients clinic for liverdisease at the Internal Medicine Division of the University Hospital ofPalermo.
