The results of a phytosociological investigation about a coastal area of S. Sicily, close to Gela, are presented. The coexistence of several lithological substrata, as well as the particular climatic conditions of this area, gives rise to a noteworthy floristic and vegetational biodiversity. A fully manipulable damped driven harmonic oscillator using optical levitation

We implement an experimental system based on optical levitation of a silicone oil droplet to demonstrate a damped driven harmonic oscillator. The apparatus allows us to control all the parameters present in the differential equation that theoretically describes such motion. The damping coefficient and driving force can be manipulated in situ by changing the pressure in the apparatus and by applying a variable electric field. We present two different experimental procedures. First, a transition from the overdamped to underdamped regimes is demonstrated by gradually lowering the air pressure. Power quality instrumentation requires the accurate fundamental frequency estimation and the signal synchronization, even in presence of disturbances. In the paper the authors present an innovative synchronization technique, based on a single phase software PLL. To evaluate how the synchronization technique is adversely affected by the application of stationary and transient disturbing influences, appropriate testing conditions have been developed, taking into account the requirements of the in-force standards. Interplay between collective effects and non-standard interactions of supernova neutrinos

We consider the effect of nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI, for short) on the propagation of neutrinos through the supernova (SN) envelope within a three-neutrino framework and taking into account the presence of a neutrino background. We find that for given NSI parameters, with strength generically denoted by epsilon(ij), neutrino evolution exhibits a significant time dependence. For vertical bar epsilon(tau tau)vertical bar greater than or similar to 10(-3) the neutrino survival probability may become sensitive to the V-23 octant and the sign of epsilon(tau tau).
