The roles of volume loss, coaxial versus noncoaxial flow, and blueschist exhumation in subduction-related accretionary wedges are still poorly understood. In our study at Leech Lake Mountain in the Eastern belt of the Franciscan subduction complex, we focus on these subjects. In the specific example of the Franciscan, the tectonic significance of the boundary between the Eastern and Central belts remains controversial. The Leech Lake Mountain area in northern California is situated immediately above this boundary and, therefore, appears to be of crucial importance for understanding aspects of the tectonic evolution of the Franciscan. The structural development at Leech Lake Mountain is char…
Alkali-metal induced C,C-bond cleavage, C,H-bond cleavage, andcyclopolimerization in 1,5-hexadienes
1988
Abstract Reaction of the 1,5-dienes 3,4-homotropilidene ( 3 ) and 2,5-diphenylhexa-1,5-diene ( 4 ) with alkali metals induces C,H-bond cleavage (hydride formation) and cyclopolymerization, respectively, in contrast to the C,C-bond cleavage observed in semibullvalene and barbaralane.
Cleavage of CD95 by matrix metalloproteinase-7 induces apoptosis resistance in tumour cells
2004
The ability of tumour cells to resist apoptosis-inducing signals by cytotoxic T cells may decide the success or failure of tumour elimination. An important effector of apoptosis is the CD95/CD95 ligand system (APO-1/Fas) that mediates perforin-independent cytotoxic T-cell killing of tumour cells. We propose a new strategy by which tumour cells can resist CD95-induced apoptosis. We identified matrix metalloproteinase-7, MMP-7 (Martilysin), as the first physiologically relevant protease that can specifically cleave CD95. MMP-7 is of unique importance because it is produced by the tumour cells themselves at early stages of tumour development. Microsequencing of the positions in CD95 cleaved by…
Termination of transcription in an ‘in vitro’ system is dependent on a polyadenylation sequence
1991
Using HeLa cell nuclear extract as a source of the different transcription and polyadenylation factors and reverse transcription to analyze the levels of RNA 5' and 3' to the cleavage-polyadenylation site, an in vitro assay has been established to study polyadenylation coupled to transcription directed by different adenovirus promoters. The levels of transcription 5' and 3' to the cleavage site in the L3 polyadenylation region are practically the same as described previously, however, the level of transcription 3' to the cleavage site in the SV40 early polyadenylation region decreases immediately after the cleavage site indicating a termination of the transcription.
Mixed-ligand copper(ii)–sulfonamide complexes: effect of the sulfonamide derivative on DNA binding, DNA cleavage, genotoxicity and anticancer activity
2013
Four ternary complexes, [Cu(L1)2(bipy)] (1) [HL1 = N-(6-chlorobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide], [Cu(L2)2(bipy)] (2) [HL2 = N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide], [Cu(L3)2(bipy)]·1/2H2O (3) [HL3 = N-(5,6-dimethylbenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide] and [Cu(L4)2(bipy)] (4) [HL4 = N-(5,6-dimethylbenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide], were prepared and then characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Whereas the molecular structure of 1 and 2 consists of a discrete monomeric copper(II) species with a distorted square planar geometry, that of 3 and 4 consists of two independent molecules. In 3, both molecules pre…
Neurosteroidogenesis in Rat Retinas
2002
Neurosteroids (steroids synthesized in the CNS) function by modulating neurotransmission. To establish an experimental model for investigation of neurosteroid synthesis and regulation, independent of blood-borne steroids, we examined the steroidogenic activity of isolated rat retinas. We identified progesterone, pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, desoxycorticosterone, 3 alpha,5 alpha-tetrahydrodesoxycorticosterone, 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 alpha-dihydroprogesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and 17-hydroxypregnenolone together with their esterified forms. As pregnenolone is the precursor of all steroids, its formation was studied in detail as an index of a steroid-synthesizing tissue. Pregnenolon…
Human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line: neurosteroid-producing cell line relying on cytoskeletal organization.
2000
Pregnenolone, the precursor of all steroids, is synthesized by CNS structures. The synthesis requires an obligatory step involving cholesterol transport to mitochondrial cytochrome P450-cholesterol side chain cleavage (cytP450scc), although the underlying mechanism(s) are still mostly unknown. We used the human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line to investigate cytP450scc expression and activity and to establish a role of cytoskeleton in pregnenolone synthesis. Immunocytochemical and biochemical approaches revealed that undifferentiated as well as differentiated cells either by retinoic acid (RA) or phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), possess cytP450scc and rapidly synthes…
Metal-free regioselective C–C bond cleavage in 1,3,5-triazine derivatives of β-diketones
2014
Metal-free regioselective activation of a carbon–carbon bond in 1,3,5-triazine derivatives of β-diketones is easily achieved, in the absence of a catalyst, with the assistance of intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
Mischungen aus phosphoroxychlorid und tert-butylhydroperoxid als polymerisationskatalysatoren
1967
For many monomers, mixtures of phosphorus oxychloride and tert-butyl hydroperoxide are more efficient initiators than the hy…
