Ainekohtaisen kielen käyttö ja oppimisen mahdollisuudet CLIL-tuntien tehtäväpohjaisissa tilanteissa
2016
This article is concerned with subject-specific language in the context of CLIL education. More specifically, the focus lies in exploring hands-on tasks in CLIL physics and chemistry lessons as sites for using and learning subject-specific language. Following Lorenzo (2007), attention is paid to the role of subject-specific language in both pre-task phases, during the tasks, and in post-task phases. The findings indicate that while teachers’ strategies differ somewhat, the pretask and post-phases provide learners more exposure to subject-specific language than the task performance itself where language use is highly context-dependent. Throughout the phases, there is also some evidence of te…
Investigating former pupils’ experiences and perceptions of CLIL in Finland: a retrospective analysis
2019
The educational approach known as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), in which content is taught partly through a foreign language, has gained great popularity in Europe in the past few decades. In Finland, CLIL has been in use since 1991 and, despite some fluctuations in its popularity, has gained a relatively stable place in the Finnish education system. CLIL has been extensively studied, but previous CLIL research has mostly focused on pupils currently enrolled in CLIL. This study takes a novel perspective by investigating CLIL retrospectively, through the eyes of former pupils. The data used are in-depth interviews with 24 former pupils who attended a CLIL class in Finland …
Mediation in practice in an ESAP course : Versions of the Medical English student conference
2021
The Medical English course at the University of Oulu (Finland), which is compulsory for 200 first-year medical students, is designed to enhance professional English language communication focusing on work life relevance. The course design utilized the action-oriented approach promoted by CEFR CV (2018), to support the active use of language through various simulation activities. This paper describes specifically the final assignment of the Medical English course, which is integrated with the Clinical Psychology course. Having discussed topics in Finnish in groups, complementing the lectures in the Clinical Psychology course, students present in English what they have learnt in these discuss…
Reconceptualising the Role of Talk in CLIL
2011
This theoretical paper offers a reconceptualisation of talk in CLIL based on sociocultural and dialogic theories of education. Building on these educational theories and the experiences of an on-going CLIL project, this paper presents a pedagogical model for the navigation of the ‘talkscape’ of the CLIL classroom. This model comprises a total of seven talk-types: organisational, social, critical, expert, exploratory, meta and pedagogic. In addition to these talk-types, the paper introduces the notion of a ‘transitional dynamic’. This notion aims to capture the transition from first language to foreign language use in CLIL both within the context of individual courses and across a broader CL…

Mācību satura un valodas integrētas apguves pieejas izmantošana mācību priekšmetā "Politika un tiesībās" 12.klases skolēnu angļu valodas leksikas kom…
2022
2017
"You've got the color, but you dont't have the shades" : primary education CLIL teachers' identity negotiation within the Finnish context
2018

In particular, it addresses professional identity in relation to two immediate contexts of teacher activity, i.e. that of the classroom and that of the collegial community. In addition to exploring how these two sides of the professional self give rise to a broader understanding of professional identity, this dissertation also explores aspects of professional agency and the negotiation of emotions in their work. The dissertation is founded on fourteen interviews with Finnish kindergarten and primary education teachers doing CLIL. The data were thema…
CLIL Challenges : Secondary School CLIL Teachers’ Voices and Experienced Agency in Three European Contexts
2020
This qualitative interview study focuses on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) teacher agency in three European contexts, Austria, Finland and Andalusia, Spain. The aim of the study is to understand how individual CLIL teachers experience their agency when encountering challenges in their work and to demonstrate the multifaceted quality of their agency. The study employs the Listening Guide method (Gilligan, 2015) to listen to the voices of three secondary school subject teachers from three diverse contexts. The analysis shows that CLIL challenges both empowered and disempowered the teachers depending on how meaningful they found their work and what their possibilities to act w…
