Bactericidal efficiency of porphyrin systems

2021

Photodynamic Inactivation is an innovative technique used to combat bacterial and viral infections which involves the use of photosensitizing agents along with light to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species able to kill bacteria and viruses. In the first section of this minireview, porphyrin-based fluorophores are shown to be remarkable dye candidates for PDI (photodynamic inactivation) applications. The second section is dedicated to the description of porphyrin-based antimicrobial materials and their potentialities for industrial applications such as in food packaging or antimicrobial medical devices and hygiene. Finally, the failings and perspectives of PDI are analyzed to demonstr…

ChemInform Abstract: Access to Pyrazolidin-3,5-diones Through Anodic N-N Bond Formation.

2016

Pyrazolidin-3,5-diones are important motifs in heterocyclic chemistry and are of high interest for pharmaceutical applications. In classic organic synthesis, the hydrazinic moiety is installed through condensation using the corresponding hydrazine building blocks. However, most N,N'-diaryl hydrazines are toxic and require upstream preparation owing to their low commercial availability. We present an alternative and sustainable synthetic approach to pyrazolidin-3,5-diones that employs readily accessible dianilides as precursors, which are anodically converted to furnish the N-N bond. The electroconversion is conducted in a simple undivided cell under constant-current conditions.

Approaches to the preparation of carborane-containing carbosilane compounds.

2005

[Structure: see text] A novel type of carborane cluster assembly has been successfully prepared using carbosilane derivatives as a scaffold. Two synthetic routes have been used: One involves the reaction of a carbosilane containing terminal Si-Cl functions with the lithium salt of the phenyl-o-carborane, and the second one consists of a highly efficient hydrosilylation of tetravinylsilane with the corresponding carboranylsilane. The crystal structure of this carborane-containing carbosilane compound has been determined by X-ray diffraction.

ChemInform Abstract: Enantioselective Synthesis of 2-Isoxazolines by a One-Flask Conjugate Addition/Oxime-Transfer Process.

2009

Enantioselective isoxazoline synthesis: A combination of 1) a catalytic enantioselective conjugate addition of oximes to alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and 2) an acid-catalyzed intramolecular oxime-transfer reaction lead to the first asymmetric synthesis of 3-unsubstituted 2-isoxazolines (see scheme).

Special Calixarenes by Directed Syntheses

1997

The synthesis of special calixarenes and calixarene-like macrocyclic compounds via stepwise procedures and fragment condensation is reviewed. Among the compounds available are exo- and endo-calixarenes consisting of different phenolic units, having bridges other than methylene or showing inherent chirality (Cn-symmetry). Macrobi- and -tricyclic molecules such as bridged calixarenes, double calixarenes, bicyclocalixarenes and annelated calixarenes are also described. Single crystal X-ray structures are reported for several compounds. Some properties like conformational barriers, pKa values or the ability to complex metal ions are discussed, showing the potential of these compounds which may …

Homocalixpyridines: Ligands Exhibiting High Selectivity in Extraction and Sensor Processes

1998

A novel spherical host architecture, based on pyridine subunits, has been created. It exhibits selective complexing properties toward soft metal ions (right), which have been tested in extraction and sensor processes. The complex-forming behaviour can be tailored by variation of the size of the cavity and by substitution. Homocalixpyridines are interesting in view of their application as selective carriers in separation and sensing techniques.

ChemInform Abstract: Poly(alkylidenamines) Dendrimers as Scaffolds for the Preparation of Low-Generation Ruthenium Based Metallodendrimers

2011

The aim of this article is to highlight the use of nitrile-functionalized poly(alkylidenamines) dendrimers as building blocks for the preparation of low-generation ruthenium based cationic metallodendrimers having in view potential biomedical applications. Air-stable poly(alkylidenamines) nitrile dendrimers, peripherally functionalized with the ruthenium moieties [Ru(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2]+ or [RuCl(dppe)2]+, have been prepared, characterized and are being studied for their anticancer activity. The followed strategy is based on the biological advantages associated with low-generation dendrimers, the known activity of ruthenium compounds as anticancer drugs and the stability of these dendrimers at…

ChemInform Abstract: Heterocycles from α-Aminonitriles

2014

Owing to their various modes of reactivity, α-aminonitriles represent versatile building blocks for the construction of a wide range of nitrogen heterocycles. The present Concept article focuses on synthetic methodologies using their bifunctional nature which is the basis of their reactivity as α-amino carbanions and as iminium ions. Reactions exclusively taking place on either the amine or on the nitrile moiety will not be considered.

Convenient Synthesis of 3-Cinnamoyl-2-styrylchromones: Reinvestigation of the Baker-Venkataraman Rearrangement

2010

An efficient and straightforward, one-pot sequence gives access to highly functionalized 3-cinnamoyl-2-styrylchromones in excellent yields. The low solubility of the target molecules allows convenient isolation. The formation of an α,α-dicinnamoylated acetophenone, as a consequence of a two-fold Baker-Venkataraman sequence, has to be anticipated.
