Inelastic Light Scattering Contribution to the Study of the Onset of Sintering of a Nanopowder

2017

International audience; The onset of the sintering of 5 nm ZrO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles is investigated by various methods including inelastic light scattering. A special attention is paid to low-frequency Raman spectra where scattering from confined acoustic vibrations and quasielastic scattering manifest. Significant changes are observed between samples sintered at different temperatures or applied forces. A detailed analysis of the spectra enables to follow the variation of the size of the nanoparticles, the surface area, and the formation of internanoparticles necks in the sintered materials. Finally, low-frequency scattering is shown to be more sensitive to the onset of sintering than m…

Testing the concentric-disk tension infiltrometer for field measurement of soil hydraulic conductivity

2010

Abstract The concentric-disk tension infiltrometer (CDTI) may be used to simultaneously measure the confined ( K c ) and the unconfined ( K u ) soil hydraulic conductivity, but it has received little testing. Comparison between K c and K u can be affected by the calculation approach applied to analyze unconfined steady-state infiltration rates. The objectives of this investigation were to: i) establish the effect of the calculation approach on the estimates of K u ; and ii) compare the K c and K u values measured by the CDTI. A clay soil, a structureless sandy loam soil, and a sandy loam soil with a relatively high gravel content were sampled using a disk of radius equal to 107.5 mm, compri…

Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) nanoparticles as building blocks for hybrid thermoelectric flexible films

2019

Hybrid thermoelectric flexible films based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes were prepared by using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The employed PEDOT nanoparticles were synthesized by oxidative miniemulsion polymerization by using iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate hexahydrate (FeTos) as an oxidant and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) as stabilizer. Sodium deoxycholate (DOC) was used as a stabilizer to prepare the aqueous dispersions of the carbon nanotubes. Hybrid thermoelectric films were finally prepared with different monomer/oxidant molar ratios and different types of carbon nanotubes, aiming to maximize the power factor (PF). The …

Epitaxial film growth and magnetic properties ofCo2FeSi

2006

We have grown thin films of the Heusler compound ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}\mathrm{Fe}\mathrm{Si}$ by RF magnetron sputtering. On (100)-oriented MgO substrates we find fully epitaxial (100)-oriented and $L{2}_{1}$ ordered growth. On ${\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}(11\overline{2}0)$ substrates, the film growth is (110)-oriented, and several in-plane epitaxial domains are observed. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a power law with an exponent of $7∕2$ at low temperatures. Investigation of the bulk magnetic properties reveals an extrapolated saturation magnetization of $5.0{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}∕\mathrm{f.u.}$ at $0\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The films on $…

Structural, electrical and optical characteristics of Al-doped zinc oxide thin films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering

2013

ZnO:Al (AZO) thin films on glass were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering at approximately 300°C substrate temperature. Structural, electrical and optical properties were investigated as a function of oxygen flow. XRD data shows that AZO thin films are polycrystalline with pronounced c-axis orientation and the grain size increasing with the oxygen flow. The lowest achieved resistivity within the deposited set of samples was 7.6·10 -4 Ωcm. The transmittance of AZO films was above 80 % at 550 nm with the optical band gap between 3.4 and 3.8 eV.

Coarsened Lattice Model for Random Granular Systems

1998

In random systems consisting of grains with size distributions the transport properties are difficult to explore by network models. However, the concentration dependence of effective conductivity and its critical properties can be considered within coarsened lattice model proposed that takes into account information from experimentally known size histograms. For certain classes of size distributions the specific local arrangements of grains can induce either symmetrical or unsymmetrical critical behaviour at two threshold concentrations. Using histogram related parameters the non-monotonic behaviour of the conductor-insulator and conductor-superconductor threshold is demonstrated.

Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Diffusivity in an Ion-Conducting Glass

1999

The nature of ion diffusivity in the vitreous conductor 2Ca NO3 2 ? 3KNO3 (CKN) was studied by nonresonant dielectric hole burning. Spectral holes in the electric field relaxation are probed subsequent to a high electric sinusoidal burn field. For sufficiently high pump frequencies we are able to induce spectrally selective modifications in the relaxation of the electric modulus, indicating that ionic diffusivity is a spatially varying quantity in glassy CKN. Homogeneous behavior occurs in the regime of low pump frequencies, in which the resistivity approaches its steady state value. Thus, longer-ranged ionic motions lead to a spatial averaging over the heterogeneity of local ion diffusivit…

Emergence of a metallic metastable phase induced by electrical current in Ca2RuO4

2019

A comprehensive study of the behavior of the Mott insulator ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$ under electrical current drive is performed by combining two experimental probes: the macroscopic electrical transport and the microscopic x-ray diffraction. The resistivity, $\ensuremath{\rho}$, versus electric current density, $J$, and temperature, $T,\ensuremath{\rho}(J,T)$, resistivity map is drawn. In particular, the metastable state, induced between the insulating and the metallic thermodynamic states by current biasing ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$ single crystals, is investigated. Such an analysis, combined with the study of the resulting ${\mathrm{RuO}}_{6}$ octahedra energy le…

Phonons of hexagonal BN under pressure: Effects of isotopic composition

2021

Raman scattering experiments on isotopically enriched hexagonal boron nitride have been performed under pressure up to 11 GPa at room temperature. The sublinear increase of the Raman-active E2g mode frequencies has been characterized. The pressure behavior has been analyzed by means of a bond-stiffness–bond-length scaling parameter γ which takes into consideration the vast differences in a- and c-axis compressibilities. The interlayer shear mode exhibits a γ parameter similar to that of graphite, and the mode frequency in isotopically pure samples separates faster at low pressures as a result of van der Waals interactions. Because of the extremely low a-axis compressibility, the intralayer …
