Comparative analysis of the proximate and elemental composition of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus, the warty crab Eriphia verrucosa, and the edibl…

2016

AbstractThe proximate composition and element contents of claw muscle tissue of Atlantic blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) were compared with the native warty crab (Eriphia verrucosa) and the commercially edible crab (Cancer pagurus). The scope of the analysis was to profile the chemical characteristics and nutritive value of the three crab species. Elemental fingerprints showed significant inter-specific differences, whereas non-significant variations in the moisture and ash contents were observed. In the blue crab, protein content was significantly lower than in the other two species, while its carbon content resulted lower than that characterizing only the warty crab. Among micro-elements…

Essential oil variability in a collection of Ocimum basilicum L. (basil) cultivars.

2016

Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic plant of great tradition in the Mediterranean area. Its economic importance is growing up determining an expansion of cultivation. This paper evaluated the morphological traits, the chemical profiles, and antibacterial activity of 21 cultivars of basil belonging to Ê»Genoveseʼ, Ê»Napoletanoʼ, and Ê»Purple basilʼ types. The cultivars were characterized by different growth rate and morphological traits. The chemical composition of the oils analyzed by GC and GC/MS analysis, supported by the PCA analysis, underlined the strong influence of chemotype. It is noteworthy that estragole, never present in Genovese and purple basil types, occurred in …

Larvicidal Activity of Essential Oils of Five Apiaceae Taxa and Some of Their Main Constituents Against Culex quinquefasciatus.

2018

Apiaceae are aromatic herbs producing essential oils which are used on an industrial scale for various purposes. Notably, Apiaceae essential oils may replace synthetic insecticides keeping most of their efficacy and avoiding environmental pollution and human poisoning. In the present work, we explored the insecticidal potential of the essential oils from five Apiaceae taxa, namely Sison amomum, Echinophora spinosa, Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sphondylium, Heracleum sphondylium subsp. ternatum, and Trachyspemum ammi, as well as their major constituents (sabinene, p-cymene, terpinolene, myristicin, and thymol), against the filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus. For the purpose, the essent…

The molecular links of re-emerging therapy: A review of evidence of Brahmi (Bacopa monniera)

2016

The convolution associated with memory is being resolved with advancement in neuroscience. According to the concurrent assumptions, synaptic plasticity forms one of the basis of memory formation, stabilization and strengthening. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is generally characterized by memory dysfunction, connections amongst the cells in the brain are attenuated or lost leading to degeneration of neural networks. Numerous attempts have been made to find new therapies for memory dysfunction with increasing attention and investments being laid on herbal drugs. Many herbal plants and extracts have already documented beneficial results when tested for antiamnesic effects. Brahmi (Bacopa …

Chemical constituents of the root wood of Erythrina sacleuxii and determination of the absolute configuration of suberectin

2020

Phytochemical investigation on the root wood of Erythrina sacleuxii (Leguminosae) led to the isolation of nine secondary metabolites (1-9). Compound 1 was isolated from the genus Erythrina for the first time. The pure compounds were identified on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses, while their absolute configurations were determined based on chiroptical measurements. Compounds 5 and 6 showed weak antifungal activity against Pyricularia oryzae with MIC values of 20 µg/mL.

Rare baryon decaysΛb→Λℓ+ℓ−(ℓ=e,μ,τ) andΛb→Λγ: Differential and total rates, lepton- and hadron-side forward-backward asymmetries

2013

Using the covariant constituent quark model previously developed by us, we calculate the differential rate and the forward-backward asymmetries on the lepton and hadron side for the rare baryon decays ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ($\ensuremath{\ell}=e$, $\ensuremath{\mu}$, $\ensuremath{\tau}$) and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. We use helicity methods to write down a threefold joint angular decay distribution for the cascade decay ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}(\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{\…

Nucleon structure functions and light front dynamics

1999

We present a quark-parton model to describe polarized and unpolarized nucleon structure functions. The twist-two matrix elements for the QCD evolution analysis of lepton-hadron scattering are calculated within a light-front covariant quark model. The relativistic effects in the three-body wave function are discussed for both the polarized and unpolarized cases. Predictions are given for the polarized gluon distributions as will be seen in future experiments.

Electromagnetic transitions of heavy baryons in theSU(2Nf)⊗O(3)symmetry

2001

We apply heavy quark symmetry to the radiative decays of heavy baryons. Even with this symmetry in place there are too many couplings to make a meaningful set of predictions. We show that if, in addition, light-diquark symmetries are applied, the number of electromagnetic couplings among S wave and P wave states as well as those between P wave to S wave transitions can be reduced significantly. Using this constituent quark model picture a number of predictions are made that will be testable in the near future.

Microstructure–property relation and machine learning prediction of hole expansion capacity of high-strength steels

2021

Abstract The relationship between microstructure features and mechanical properties plays an important role in the design of materials and improvement of properties. Hole expansion capacity plays a fundamental role in defining the formability of metal sheets. Due to the complexity of the experimental procedure of testing hole expansion capacity, where many influencing factors contribute to the resulting values, the relationship between microstructure features and hole expansion capacity and the complexity of this relation is not yet fully understood. In the present study, an experimental dataset containing the phase constituents of 55 microstructures as well as corresponding properties, su…
