Cancer Prevention with Resistant Starch in Lynch Syndrome Patients in the CAPP2-Randomized Placebo Controlled Trial : Planned 10-Year Follow-up

Abstract The CAPP2 trial investigated the long-term effects of aspirin and resistant starch on cancer incidence in patients with Lynch syndrome (LS). Participants with LS were randomized double-blind to 30 g resistant starch (RS) daily or placebo for up to 4 years. We present long-term cancer outcomes based on the planned 10-year follow-up from recruitment, supplemented by National Cancer Registry data to 20 years in England, Wales, and Finland. Overall, 463 participants received RS and 455 participants received placebo. Tumors derived from ras-transformed rat fibroblasts were investigated in order to gain insight into possible interrelationships between oncogenic transformations and therapeutically relevant parameters of the metabolic micromilieu of solid tumors in vivo. Tumors grew in nude mice after injection of in vitro-passaged cells. Growth rates, early stages of angiogenesis, perfusion and tissue oxygenation were assessed. Compared with the parental cell line, both ras transformants grew very rapidly and exhibited an early onset of angiogenesis. Blood flow and metabolic microenvironment of brain tumors

Summarizing thesein vivo data in the context of brain tumor therapy, the following aspects are of particular importance: Low and heterogeneous tumor blood flow may — in addition to the limiting effects of the blood-brain barrier — result in compromised delivery of drugs from blood to the tissue. Low tumor pO2 reduces sensitivity to standard radiation and ‘O2-dependent’ anticancer drugs. Treatment efficacy may be further altered by changes of tumor pH. Particularly acidosis can decrease radiation sensitivity and modulate the cytotoxicity of anticancer drugs. In the following presentations, these aspects will be discussed regardingin vivo data obtained with positron emission tomography.

Design of an efficient digital down-converter for a SDR-based DVB-S receiver

This paper presents the design of an area-power efficient digital down-converter suitable for broadband communication systems. The DVB-S standard has been used as a design example. It has been shown that by selecting a bandpass sampling to generate only one spectral image, the case in which the relationship between the digital carrier frequency and the sampling frequency is 1/4, not only gives the smallest area but the lowest power consumption.

AIM Monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP), local cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen is part of modern intensive critical care medicine. Preclinical evaluation of newly developed catheters that should monitor several parameters simultaneously is reported poorly in the literature.
