Chemical Applications of Mössbauer Spectroscopy
2012
The Tutorial Lecture begins with a brief recapitulation of the hyperfine interactions and the relevant parameters observable in a Mossbauer spectrum. The main chapter with selected examples of chemical applications of Mossbauer spectroscopy follows and is subdivided into sections on: basic information on structure and bonding; switchable molecules (thermal spin transition in mono- and oligonuclear coordination compounds, light-induced spin transition, nuclear-decay-induced spin transition, spin transition in metallomesogens); mixed-valency in biferrocenes and other iron coordination compounds, and in an europium intermetallic compound; electron transfer in Prussian blue-analog complexes; mo…
Supramolecular coordination chemistry of aromatic polyoxalamide ligands: A metallosupramolecular approach toward functional magnetic materials
2010
Abstract The impressive potential of the metallosupramolecular approach in designing new functional magnetic materials constitutes a great scientific challenge for the chemical research community that requires an interdisciplinary collaboration. New fundamental concepts and future applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology will emerge from the study of magnetism as a supramolecular function in metallosupramolecular chemistry. Our recent work on the rich supramolecular coordination chemistry of a novel family of aromatic polyoxalamide (APOXA) ligands with first-row transition metal ions has allowed us to move one step further in the rational design of metallosupramolecular assemblies of …
A Combined Top-Down/Bottom-Up Approach for the Nanoscale Patterning of Spin-Crossover Coordination Polymers
2007
Molecular spin-crossover complexes of 3d–3d transitionmetal ions have been the focus of many researchers’ work because of their fascinating properties associated with the bistability of their electronic states (high spin (HS) or low spin (LS)). Although the origin of the spin-crossover phenomenon is purely molecular, the macroscopic behavior of these systems in the solid state is strongly determined by the interactions, of mainly elastic origin, between the transition-metal ions. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in the area of spin-crossover complexes with infinite one-, two-, or three-dimensional (1D, 2D, 3D) networks, the so-called coordination polymers. The purpose of this app…
Inside Front Cover: A Combined Top-Down/Bottom-Up Approach for the Nanoscale Patterning of Spin-Crossover Coordination Polymers (Adv. Mater. 16/2007)
2007
The background scanning electron microscopy image shows nanometric patterns of the 3D spin crossover coordination polymer Fe(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4] (see schematic structure in the circle), which have been fabricated using a combination of lift-off and multilayer sequential assembly methods. These patterns, reported by Gabor Molnar, Azzedine Bousseksou, and co-workers on p. 2163, exhibit a bistability of their electronic states (1A1 ⇌ 5T2), and thus represent a novel platform for a wide array of potential applications.
A fluorinated 2D magnetic coordination polymer
2021
Herein we show the versatility of coordination chemistry to design and expand a family of 2D materials by incorporating F groups at the surface of the layers. Through the use of a prefuntionalized organic linker with F groups, it is possible to achieve a layered magnetic material based on Fe(ii) centers that are chemically stable in open air, contrary to the known 2D inorganic magnetic materials. The high quality of the single crystals and their robustness allow to fabricate 2D molecular materials by micromechanical exfoliation, preserving the crystalline nature of these layers together with the desired functionalization.
Electrical Voltage Control of the Pressure-Induced Spin Transition at Room Temperature in the Microporous 3D Polymer [Fe(pz)Pt(CN)4]
2019
Fine control and direct monitoring of the spin crossover properties driven by pressure at room temperature are reported for the porous three-dimensional coordination polymer {Fe(pz)[Pt(CN)4]} by us...
Graphene related magnetic materials: micromechanical exfoliation of 2D layered magnets based on bimetallic anilate complexes with inserted [FeIII(aca…
2015
The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of the coordination compounds of formula [FeIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Cl2 An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (1), [FeIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Br2An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (2) and [GaIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Br2An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (3) are reported. They exhibit a 2D anionic network formed by Mn(II) and Cr(III) ions linked through anilate ligands, while the [FeIII(acac2-trien)]+ or [GaIII(acac2-trien)]+ charge-compensating cations are placed inside the hexagonal channels of the 2D network, instead of being inserted in the interlamellar spacing. Thus, these crystals are formed by hybrid layers assembled through van der Waals interactions. The magnetic properties indicate …
A Self-Assembled 2D Molecule-Based Magnet: The Honeycomb Layered Material {Co3Cl4(H2O)2[Co(Hbbiz)3]2}
2003
Research in the area of molecule-based magnets is rapidly expanding, owing, in part, to numerous breakthroughs in the past decade.[1] The preparation of solid-state architectures of varying dimensionalities from specifically tailored paramagnetic building blocks has proven to be very successful, and also clearly multidisciplinary. Materials science and supramolecular chemistry efforts have joined forces with classical organic and inorganic chemistry in the design of solid-state materials whose magnetic properties rival, and sometimes even exceed, those of classic inorganic solids.[2] The moleculebased strategy allows for the preparation of unusual materials that cannot otherwise be obtained…
Red-light-emitting electrochemical cell using a polypyridyl iridium(III) polymer.
2009
A deep-red phosphorescent ionic iridium(III) complex is prepared and incorporated into a polymer. Both the complex (1) and the polymer (2) were used as the single active material in solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The devices built up using 1 and 2 emit in the deep-red region of the visible spectrum with CIE coordinates x = 0.710; y = 0.283 and x = 0.691; y = 0.289, respectively, making them one of the deepest-red emitting LECs reported. It is the first example of a polymeric LEC incorporating an ionic iridium complex, which exhibits increased stabilities compared with the device based on the small molecular weight complex.
