Violence in the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales: a corpus-based approach

The purpose of this article is to carry out a corpus-based study on the presence of violence in a selection of eight tales by the Grimm's Brothers by looking at the terms which can be said to relate to the semantic field of violence. More specifically, this study will analyse a selection of eight tales in which the frequency of the words cut, dead and blood will be studied in detail. These words have been chosen due to their possible connection to violence after carrying out a quantitative analysis of the frequency of the whole main corpus. English does not have a grammatical gender, thus having an “intrinsic predisposition towards gender-neutral forms” (Poddighe 2020, 3). Most personal nouns do not indicate a specific gender, as in the case of person or engineer. However, there are also personal nouns with lexical gender, such as king or queen (Hellinger 2001). Designed as a proof-of-concept, this descriptive corpus-based study focuses on the concept of phrase frame, defined as a contiguous sequence of n words identical except for one (Fletcher 2002). Although phrase frames were already used as a means of exploring pattern variability across and within different text types or registers written in English, they have been rarely, if ever, employed so far as a unit of analysis in descriptive research on translation. Nesenie panākumi korpusa lingvistikā liecina par to, ka korpusa lietojums rakstītmācīšanā var nodrošināt svešvalodas ar īpašu datubāzi, sastāvošu no autentiskiem valodas datiem, kas savukārt var uzlabot mācību procesu. Šī pētījuma mērķis bija noskaidrot, vai korpusos balstītu aktivitāšu lietojums var uzlabot saistošo vārdu izmantošanu klasifikācijas un salīdzinājuma/kontrasta rindkopu rakstītmācīšanā. Pētniecības metode, kas tika izmantota šī maģistra darba tapšanā bija gadījuma izpēte, kas ietvēra pirmstestu, pēctestu un aptaujas anketu.
