Optimization of Cultural Heritage Virtual Environments for Gaming Applications
2020
Serious games are games with a purpose beyond entertainment and are widely acknowledged as fruitful tools for learning and developing skills across multiple domains, including educational enhancement. In the last few years, the world of serious games has widely increased. The use of these types of games can aid in classrooms to not only help the students learn concepts but also to improve their motivation to do so. However, designing games necessitates very specialized personnel and the process can often be costly and slow. The adaptions of the design to the implantation phase are also difficult and the process needs more focus. The challenge of this study was to create a game within the co…
Multidisciplinary analysis on a marble bas-relief of unknown origin
2022
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how a disciplinary approach is an excellent tool in the field of forensic investigations, capable of answering the questions posed by the institution and obtaining as different and as much information as possible on the findings analyzed, reconstructing the history of often decontextualized artifacts. In the present work, the results of the FTIR-ATR and SEM-EDX analyses performed on micro-fragments and powders taken from a marble bas-relief, seized by the Cosenza Carabinieri Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and Anti-Counterfeiting (Calabria, Italy), are reported.

Transnational Religious Practices as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Complex Case of the Traditional Latin Mass
2023
The 2003 UNESCO Convention definition of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) covers religious practices and rites, as can be seen from normative descriptions and dozens of actual examples, many of which are Catholic religious traditions. The Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), practiced in one form or another for over 1500 years by an ever-increasing number of peoples and nations and in possession of a common stable set of rules, meets the UNESCO criteria for listing as ICH; in fact, it is arguably the best possible example. It is also a complicated one. After the Catholic Church’s liturgical reform in the 1960s and 1970s, new rites were introduced and the old rites were officially abandoned; neve…
The EU'S Explicit and Implicit Heritage Politics
2014
During the past couple of decades, heritage has become topical in a new way in Europe as the concept has been utilized for political purposes in the EU cultural policy. The EU currently administrates or supports three initiatives – the European Heritage Days, the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage, and the European Heritage Label – that address the fostering of the transnational European cultural heritage. The article discusses the explicit and implicit heritage politics included in these initiatives. In order to understand the constructive and generative nature of the EU heritage politics, it is approached in the article as a discursive meaning-making process consisting of several …

GPR investigations at San Nicolò Church: a case-study from the 1669 eruption in the old settlement of Misterbianco (Etna, Sicily)
2023
Misterbianco, located on the southern slope of Mt. Etna (eastern Sicily), was destroyed in the past by two catastrophic events that raised the old town to the ground. The first was the great eruption of 1669, whose lava front buried dozens of villages encountered along its path, entirely destroying the architectural heritage of Etna's southern flank. The second event was the disastrous 1693 Val di Noto earthquake, which caused major destruction throughout south-eastern Sicily, also damaging the few still standing buildings in the town. The GPR survey performed at this site, 350 years after the eruption, allowed a first attempt of planimetric reconstruction of the San Nicolo Church. Starting…
Ochrona i promocja dziedzictwa kulturowego na przykładzie pieców chlebowych (piekarnioków)
2023
Piece chlebowe, wolno stojące, od XIX w. stanowiły charakterystyczny element zabudowy osiedli i kolonii robotniczych na Górnym Śląsku powstałych w związku z intensywnym rozwojem przemysłu. Piece te nazywane piekarniokami, piekarokami służyły przede wszystkim mieszkańcom do wypieku chleba i kołaczy drożdżowych. Jednem…
