Cytotoxicity of three naturally occurring flavonoid derived compounds (artocarpesin, cycloartocarpesin and isobavachalcone) towards multi-factorial d…

2015

Abstract Introduction Cancer remains an aggressive deadly disease, if drug resistance develops. This problem is aggravated by the fact that multiple rather than single mechanisms are involved in resistance and that multidrug resistance (MDR) phenomena cause inefficacy of many clinical established anticancer drugs. We are seeking for novel cytotoxic phytochemicals to combat drug-resistant tumour cells. Methods In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxicity of three naturally occurring flavonoids including two flavones artocarpesin (1) and cycloartocarpesin (2) and one chalcone, isobavachalcone (3) against 9 drug-sensitive and MDR cancer cell lines. The resazurin reduction assay was u…

ATRIP protects progenitor cells against DNA damage in vivo

2020

AbstractThe maintenance of genomic stability during the cell cycle of progenitor cells is essential for the faithful transmission of genetic information. Mutations in genes that ensure genome stability lead to human developmental syndromes. Mutations in Ataxia Telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) or in ATR-interacting protein (ATRIP) lead to Seckel syndrome, which is characterized by developmental malformations and short life expectancy. While the roles of ATR in replicative stress response and chromosomal segregation are well established, it is unknown how ATRIP contributes to maintaining genomic stability in progenitor cells in vivo. Here, we generated the first mouse model to investigat…

Decision support towards agile eco-design of microreaction processes by accompanying (simplified) life cycle assessment

2011

Continuously running syntheses in microstructured reactors offers novel ways to intensify conventional chemical processes. An outstanding advantage of microreaction technology is the high surface-to-volume-ratio which enables intensive mixing phenomena as well as high mass and heat transfer rates. Thus, microstructured reactors may be a suitable means to improve multiphase reactions by increasing the interfacial area and the intensification of internal mixing. This improvement in reaction performances may lead to reduced environmental burdens of the process under consideration. The method of simplified life cycle assessment (SLCA) is a suitable tool to evaluate the environmental burdens cau…

Construction of green nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts via non-covalent surface decoration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with Pd(II) complex…

2017

Abstract Green nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts were prepared via a bottom-up strategy. Designed ligands were synthesized joining covalently an electrondeficient pyrimidine residue and a scorpiand azamacrocycle. The desired molecular properties were easily transferred to nanostructured materials in two steps: first, exploiting their spontaneous chemisorption onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via the pyrimidinic moiety in water at room temperature, then, taking advantage of the easy coordination of Pd(II) to the azamacrocycle in the same conditions. An evenly distribution of catalytic centres was obtained on the MWCNTs surface. Catalytic properties of these materials were ass…

New approach to condensed pyrid-2-ones

2002

We wish to report a simple procedure for the preparation of 5-substituted-thienopyridin-7-ones and 7-substituted-1,6-naphthyridin-5(6H)-ones, in good yields, from the dianions of 3-methylthiophene-2-carboxylic and 2-methylnicotinic acids on treatment with nitriles. Availability of polyphenols in fruit beverages subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and their effects on proliferation, cell-cycle and ap…

2009

Abstract Three fruit beverages: Fb (grape–orange–apricot), FbFe (Fb + iron sulphate) and FbFeM (FbFe + skimmed milk) were subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Addition of Fe and milk decreased the phenolic content of Fb by 13% and 55%, respectively. The digestion process decreased the phenolic content by 47%, 60%, and 70% in Fb, FbFe and FbFeM with respect to the initial, non-digested, Fb. Caco-2 cells were incubated for 4 h daily for four days or continuously for 24 h with bioaccessible fractions obtained after the digestion (digests). Polyphenols were not metabolised by Caco-2 cells. Fb digest (∼50 μM total phenolics) was the sample that led to the highest inhibition of cell …

Electrochemical chiral recognition by microparticle coatings of Pd complexes with bridging cyclometalated phosphines

2008

Abstract The palladium(II) dinuclear complex with bridging cyclometalated phosphines, {Pd2[μ-(C6H4)PPh2]2(μ-O2CCH3)2} (Pd2L2), having a paddlewheel structure, is reversibly oxidized in CH2Cl2 to a dinuclear palladium(III) analogue via two successive one-electron steps. Solid state voltammetry of Pd2L2 in contact with aqueous electrolytes produce as one-electron oxidation with two competing mechanisms involving anion intercalation/anion binding between/to metal centres, chloride ions acting as inhibitors for the first pathway. R- and S-Pd2L2 produces a significant stereoselective electrocatalytic activity with respect to the oxidation of l - and d -glutamic acid in alkaline media.

Electrostatic field theory and circuit analysis in the design of coalescers with pulsed dc voltage

2009

This paper presents a mathematical analysis of the electric field and interfacial free charge experienced by the emulsion in an electrostatic coalescer that is subjected to a pulsed dc voltage. Previous work in this area is re-assessed, but the analysis is expanded. A novel static analysis of the system is presented, giving valuable physical insight. It becomes obvious that there must be a limited range of frequencies that are effective in a pulsed dc scheme. Thereafter, analytical expressions for the steady-state solution, where both the switching frequency and duty ratio (or mark space ratio) can be varied, are presented for the first time. These expressions are used to derive voltage and…

Eight-membered heterocycles with two heteroatoms in a 1,3-relationship of interest in medicinal chemistry

2022

This chapter deals with 1,3-diheterocines, eight-membered heterocyclic systems with two heteroatoms, N, O and S, in a 1,3 relationship, exhibiting biological properties and exhaustively covers the literature from 2007 to the end of November 2019. The biological results of 1,3-diazocines, 1,3-oxazocines, 1,3-dioxocins and 1,3-thiazocines, that are the largest class of 1,3-diheterocines, were collected together with the few results available for 1,3-oxathiocin and 1,3-dithiocin derivatives at that time.
