Ronald Dworkin e il positivismo giuridico: un bilancio provvisorio

2014

The controversy between Dworkin and legal positivism has lasted more than forty years. After Dworkin’s death, a reflection on this debate is needed. This paper faces some of the most important and popular arguments Dworkin advanced against legal positivism. More precisely, the article is divided in two main parts. The first is devoted to a critical presentation of three arguments developed by Dworkin in his early essays against Hart’s practice theory of norms. In particular, these arguments challenge a) the idea that law is a system of rules; b) the autonomy of legal obligation from moral one and c) the idea that judges exercise (strong) discretion in hard cases. The second part analyses tw…

Clusterin and LRP2 are critical components of the hypothalamic feeding regulatory pathway.

2012

Hypothalamic feeding circuits are essential for the maintenance of energy balance. There have been intensive efforts to discover new biological molecules involved in these pathways. Here we report that central administration of clusterin, also called apolipoprotein J, causes anorexia, weight loss and activation of hypothalamic signal transduction-activated transcript-3 in mice. In contrast, inhibition of hypothalamic clusterin action results in increased food intake and body weight, leading to adiposity. These effects are likely mediated through the mutual actions of the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-2, a potential receptor for clusterin, and the long-form leptin receptor…

A local level set method for liver segmentation in functional MR imaging

2011

Functional Magnetic Resonance (fMR) is a medical image technique in which a contrast is injected in the vascular system so that blood diffusion along it can be observed as variations of the signal intensity. The uptake variations of the contrast agent are used in early detection of tumorous tissue. For the diagnostic to be accurate, successive volumes must be correctly registered. For binary registration prior segmentation of the 3D fMR data is required. Here we present a local 3D level-set segmentation method which preserves details and edges, along with its multi-scale version which has the advantage of a great acceleration with respect to the single-scale version. Results of liver segmen…

Alma implementation in Norwegian Academic libraries

2017

This survey was issued anonymously to all members of staff in Norwegian academic libraries. The main target of the survey was to investigate how the implementation of the new library system Alma was experienced. The survey was issued in Norwegian. Staff in Norwegian academic libraries count for 1637 full-time equivalent. The answer rate was 499 respondents that completed the whole survey, and 127 that gave some answers, but did not complete the entire survey. The response of 626 library professionals makes for a response rate of 38%. Most of the questions are closed-ended questions, but some open-ended questions.

Aerodynamics of an isolated ski jumping ski

2019

A single isolated ski was suspended from a six-component wind tunnel balance and three angles, the angle of attack, the yaw angle and the edge angle were adjustable during the test. Increasing yaw angle from 0 to 15° increased the lift coefficient CL from 0.42 to 0.90 at edge angle 0° and from 0.70 to 0.87 at edge angle 10°, respectively. Increasing yaw angle also increased the sensitivity of the ski to changes in edge angle, i.e., increasing the edge angle (20°–45°) decreased the CL and the ratio $$C_{L}^{2}/{C_D}$$ with large yaw angles. However, to maximize the lift-to-drag ratio with a typical angle of attack of 30° in ski jumping, it may be reasonable to have an edge angle of 5°–10° on…

A Dichoptic Edge Effect Resulting from Binocular Contour Dominance

1980

If one eye sees a bright field on a dark surround while a homogeneous background is presented to the other eye, then a distinct dark zone appears at the outer borders of the field. If the surround is coloured, then the zone is of corresponding hue. The effect disappears if the edge of the field can be fused with a bar of appropriate contrast. The influence of parameters such as pattern contrast and size were studied quantitatively. A model is proposed relating the effect to receptive-field organisation and the fusion process.

CORTESÍA Y LENGUAS DE ESPECIALIDAD ENTRE LO LOCAL Y LO GLOBAL: EL CASO DE LAS RESEÑAS DE HOTELES EN ESPAÑOL E INGLÉS

2015

MODULAR KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION IN ADVISOR AGENTS FOR SITUATION AWARENESS

2011

A modular knowledge representation framework for conversational agents is presented. The approach has been realized to suit the situation awareness paradigm. The modularity of the framework makes possible the composition of specific modules that deal with particular features, simplifying both the chatbot design process and its smartness. As a proof of concepts we have developed a modular, situation awareness oriented, KB for a conversational agent, which plays the role of an advisor aimed at helping a user to be in charge of a virtual town, inspired to the SimCity series game. The agent makes an extensive use of semantic computing techniques and is able to perceive, comprehend and project c…

Identical constituent compounds in German

2014

The status of identical constituent compounds (ICCs) (e.g. Künstler-Künstler, ‘artist-artist’) is discussed controversially in the morphological literature on German. In this paper, it is claimed that ICC formation is a productive word formation pattern in German. In the first part of the paper, I investigate the formal, semantic and pragmatic properties of ICCs in German. Based on this description, I discuss in more detail two conflicting claims about their meaning constitution: the ‘prototype reading claim’ and the ‘context-dependency claim’. I argue that ICCs do not behave differently, in principle, from canonical N+N compounds with respect to context-dependency. Based on a discussion o…

Aspects discursifs dans les contes d’ Edgar Allan Poe et leurs traductions en français et en espagnol

2012

It is known that the translation exercise has always been important in the development of the human knowledge. That is why we have considered interesting to analyse the French and Spanish translations of Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales. The aim of this contribution is the study of temporal cohesion in a cognitive approach. We have chosen three Tales of Edar Allan Poe: Berenice, The Oval Portrait, and The Masque of the Red Death. In a first step we’ll find the three markers still, again and then among the three Tales and in a second step we will compare the translations (French and Spanish ) of these markers with the original text. We think that these markers are polysemous and that they have a prot…
