Activin A and bone metastasis
2010
Activin A, is a multifunctional cytokine of the transforming growth factor-b superfamily of growth factors. This molecule has been shown to be implicated in the regulation of a broad range of important biological functions including bone remodelling. Therefore, a deregulation in the activin signalling pathway may result in disturbances of normal bone metabolism and, eventually, in the onset of severe pathological conditions associated with an altered bone resorption. These observations support the concept that Act A might also be implicated in the pathogenesis of bone metastasis. This review provides insight into the most recent advances in understanding the role of this growth factor in th…
Deep Learning-Based Sign Language Digits Recognition From Thermal Images With Edge Computing System
2021
The sign language digits based on hand gestures have been utilized in various applications such as human-computer interaction, robotics, health and medical systems, health assistive technologies, automotive user interfaces, crisis management and disaster relief, entertainment, and contactless communication in smart devices. The color and depth cameras are commonly deployed for hand gesture recognition, but the robust classification of hand gestures under varying illumination is still a challenging task. This work presents the design and deployment of a complete end-to-end edge computing system that can accurately provide the classification of hand gestures captured from thermal images. A th…
Adapted processing of catadioptric images using polarization imaging
2009
A non parametric method that defines a pixel neighborhood within catadioptric images is presented in this paper. It is based on an accurate modeling of the mirror shape by using polarization imaging. Unlike the most of current processing methods in the literature, this method is non-parametric and can deal with the deformation of catadioptric images. This paper demonstrates how an appropriate neighborhood can be derived from the polarization parameters by estimation of the degree of polarization and the angle of polarization which in return directly provide an adapted neighborhood of each pixel that can be used to perform image derivation, edge detection, interest point detection and namely…
Influence of Content Knowledge on Pedagogical Content Knowledge: The case of teaching photosynthesis and plant growth
2009
International audience; Abstract The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of the amount and quality of content knowledge on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). The biological content photosynthesis and plant growth was used as an example. The research sample consisted of 10 primary and 10 secondary (biology) teacher students. Questionnaires, lesson preparation task and an interview were used to collect data. Primary student teachers' were not aware of students' conceptual difficulties and had problems in choosing the most important content. Neither of the groups had knowledge on suitable experiments and demonstrations, which indicates that PCK should be explicitly taught. The …
Pleasure and Knowledge in Aristotle's Rhetoric
2018
The paper focuses on a basic principle of Aristotle’s Rhetoric according to which the more a discourse is able to produce in the hearer a quick and pleasant learning, the more it will be persuasive. Starting from the numerous examples provided by Aristotle, the paper shows that this principle, which we can call Pleasure and Knowledge Principle (PKP), regards all the levels of a speech (inventio as well as elocutio, actio, and dispositio) and it is founded in Aristotle’s anthropology and epistemology. Thanks to this feature, PKP can be considered the common thread of the whole Rhetoric as well as a good starting point for a general reflection on the persuasive power of language and its role …
Embedded students? Can libraries benefit from students having work placements in the library in planning library instruction?
2019
This article discusses how students can be more integrated in developing library instruction and what advantages that can provide for librarians planning their teaching. The students seem to have a different starting point as to how important the librarians’ knowledge of the subject at hand is and whether or not library instruction should be an integrated part of the course.
Functional fixedness and functional reduction as common sense reasonings in chemical equilibrium and in geometry and polarity of molecules
2000
Many of the learning difficulties in the specific domain of chemistry are found not only in the ideas already possessed by students but in the strategic and procedural knowledge that is characteristic of everyday thinking. These defects in procedural knowledge have been described as functional fixedness and functional reduction. This article assesses the procedural difficulties of students (grade 12 and first and third year of university) based on common sense reasoning in two areas of chemistry: chemical equilibrium and geometry and polarity of molecules. In the first area, the theme of external factors affecting equilibria (temperature and concentration change) was selected because the ex…
Native Waterscapes in the Northern Borderlands: Restoring Traditional Environmental Knowledge in Linda Hogan’s Solar Storms
2018
ABSTRACT: In her novel Solar Storms (1995) Chickasaw novelist and poet Linda Hogan foresees what political geographers today refer to as waterscapes, that is, water-based environments where a multiplicity of human and other-than-human forces interact with each other producing diverse forms of signification. This essay examines Indigenous experiences of water, geography, and social activism as they intersect in Hogan‘s waterscape narrative. I ground my analysis of this visionary novel in recent geographical studies that look at waterscapes from the perspective of cultural politics and which criticize rationalist conceptions of water that reduce it to the sole function of human commodity. Ch…
Assessing the Quality of the Bachelor Degree Courses: An Analysis of their Effects on Students' Acquisition of Economic Content Knowledge
2014
