Amorphous semiconductor—electrolyte junction. Energetics at the a-WO3—electrolyte junction
1991
In order to elucidate the influence of thickness and amorphous structure on the kinetics of electron exchange with redox couples in solution, a critical re-examination of the energetics at the amorphous anodic WO3 films (a-WO3)—electrolyte junction has been performed, based on a recent theory of amorphous semiconductor (a-SC) Schottky barrier. The admittance study of the barrier performed in a large interval of electrode potential at changing frequency and film thickness allowed the determination of the energy levels as well as the distribution of localized electronic states within the mobility gap of the films. The new energetic picture derived is able to explain some features of the kinet…
Recent advances on physico-chemical characterization of passive films by EIS and differential admittance techniques
2007
Abstract Thin Nb2O5 anodic films (∼20 nm thick) grown in phosphoric acid solution have been characterised by EIS and differential admittance study in a large range of potential and frequency. The overall electrical behaviour has been interpreted by means of the theory of amorphous semiconductor Schottky barrier in presence of a non-constant density of states (DOS). A comparison of DOS for films grown in different electrolytes is reported.
Effect of media composition on long-term in vitro stability of barium alginate and polyacrylic acid multilayer microcapsules.
2000
For a number of applications stability of microcapsules is a critical factor. Since the maintenance of polyelectrolyte complexes depends considerably on the ion composition we tested the physical properties of barium alginate capsules and searched for conditions to improve stability by a multilayer coating with polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Mechanical stability and diameters were determined in barium alginate capsules and compared with multilayer capsules. Multilayer coating resulted in smaller capsules than barium complexing alone. The difference was more pronounced when CaCl2 was used instead of NaCl during coating. Barium alginate capsules and application of CaCl2 du…
Effect of Ni content on the structure and hydrogenation property of mechanically alloyed TiMgNix ternary alloys
2017
Abstract In this study, TiMgNix samples (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) have been prepared by mechanical alloying using a planetary high-energy ball mill. The structural transformations were characterized by XRD and indicated that all the as-milled TiMgNix alloys consist of mixtures of crystalline Mg and amorphous Ti-Ni-(Mg) phase. TEM analyses also show that nanocrystallites and amorphous phases coexist in the as-milled TiMgNi alloy. Electrochemical test shows that the TiMgNi composition yields the highest discharge capacity. The discharge capacities and activation properties of TiMgNix alloys linearly increase with increasing Ni content. The MgTiNi0.8 composition boasts the best cycling prope…

Conductivities and silver electrode polarization resistance of solid electrolyte ceramics from ZrO 2 -Y 2 O 3 powder synthesized in air plasma
1998
Ceramic specimens have been obtained from the powder of ZrO2-7.5 mol% Y2O3 having a specific surface area of 30 m2/g synthesized in air plasma. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that the plasma process makes it possible to prepare so-called nanopowders with a particle size less than 100 nm, possessing specific physical, chemical and technological properties. The sintered density of the specimens was 94–96% of the theoretical value, 6.001 g/cm3. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the specimens corresponded to a face-centered cubic lattice. Impedance in the frequency range of 100 Hz–15 MHz and d.c. polarization curves in a potential range of −10 to 10 mV were measured in the tempera…
Tuning of the Mg Alloy AZ31 Anodizing Process for Biodegradable Implants
2021
Coatings were grown on the AZ31 Mg alloy by a hard anodizing process in the hot glycerol phosphate-containing electrolyte. Anodizing conditions were optimized, maximizing corrosion resistance estimated by impedance measurements carried out in Hank's solution at 37 °C. A post anodizing annealing treatment (350 °C for 24 h) allowed us to further enhance the corrosion resistance of the coatings mainly containing magnesium phosphate according to energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman analyses. Gravimetric measurements revealed a hydrogen evolution rate within the limits acceptable for application of AZ31 in biomedical devices. In vitro tests demonstrated that the coatings are biocompati…
A new route to grow oxide nanostructures based on metal displacement deposition. Lanthanides oxy/hydroxides growth
2012
Abstract A metal displacement reaction has been used in order to cause precipitation of oxide nanostructures within pores of anodic alumina membrane (AAM) templates. Here, we focus on the displacement deposition of LnO/OH (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Er) nanostructures using Zn as sacrificial anode, employing a specific cell arrangement where a galvanic couple was formed between zinc anode and the Au thin layer covering template pore bottom. Progress of displacement deposition reaction into template channels was monitored measuring the open circuit potential as well as pH changes of the electrolyte. A progressive de-activation of the anode surface was observed for long deposition times, caused by depo…
The influence of composition on band gap and dielectric constant of anodic Al-Ta mixed oxides
2015
Al-Ta mixed oxides were grown by anodizing sputter-deposited Al-Ta alloys of different composition. Photocurrent spectra revealed a band gap, Eg, slightly independent on Ta content and very close to that of anodic Ta2O5 (∼4.3 eV) with the exception of the anodic film on Al-10at% Ta, which resulted to be not photoactive under strong anodic polarization. The photoelectrochemical characterization allowed to estimate also the oxides flat band potential and to get the necessary information to sketch the energetic of the metal/oxide/electrolyte interfaces. Impedance measurements allowed to confirm the formation of insulating material and to estimate the dielectric constant of the oxides, which re…
Anodic alumina membranes as template for the synthesis of 1-D metal oxide and hydroxide nanostructures
2008
Anodic alumina membranes with highly ordered cylindrical pores and tuneable geometry have been prepared (pore diameters=20−200 nm; pore density 1012-1014 pores/m2; thickness: 20-100 mm) by controlling the anodizing process of aluminum in phosphoric, oxalic and sulphuric acid. The influence of different parameters (initial treatment of aluminium surface, composition of electrolyte, temperature and applied potential) on the final characteristics of the membranes have been investigated. The use anodic alumina membranes as template for the electrosynthesis of some metal hydroxides and oxides 1-D nanostructures (nanowires and nanotubes) will be also proved.
