Heat in Metal Cutting

This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding thermal effects during the cutting process with both uncoated and coated cutting tools. Main heat sources and flowing heat fluxes into the tool, chip and workpiece are characterized and quantified. The heat distribution models that allow the analytical prediction of heat partition between the tool and the chip are specified. They consider such thermal properties as specific heat, thermal conductivity and diffusivity, Peclet thermal number, and heat transmission ratio, all as functions of temperature. Weld quality prediction in linear friction welding of AA6082-T6 through an integrated numerical tool

Abstract A numerical and an experimental campaign were carried out with varying oscillation frequency and interface pressure. The local values of the main field variables at the contact interface between the specimens were predicted by a Lagrangian, implicit, thermo-mechanical FEM model and used as input of a dedicated Neural Network (NN). The NN, integrated in the FEM environment, was designed in order to calculate both a Boolean output, indicating the occurrence of welding, and a continuous output, indicating the quality of the obtained solid state weld. Assessment of material models through simple machining tests

The accuracy of the results obtained from FEM simulation of machining operations depends on the accuracy of input data. Among these, the flow stress data of the workpiece are extremely important together with the friction along the tool-chip interface. In this study, an identification procedure for the determination of material parameters that are used for the FEM simulation of machining processes is proposed. Experimental framework of traveling trolley with swinging load for hybrid motion control

A novel experimental framework of the traveling trolley with swinging load is proposed. The system is designed as a controlled moving cart with pendulum for investigation of the hybrid motion control methods, involving the discrete sensors and impulsive event-based state observations and control actions. A mechatronic approach of principal system design, modeling, and identification are provided together with a motion control of the cart and simple event-based control of a-priori unknown final position. The coupled motion dynamics is analyzed and evaluated by using the discrete sensors, along with the control results.

Process mechanics in Friction Stir Extrusion of magnesium alloys chips through experiments and numerical simulation

Abstract Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE) is a novel process designed to directly recycle machining chips. An experimental campaign was carried out on AZ31 milling chips using variations in extrusion ratio, force and tool rotation rate. The process mechanics were studied and correlated to the material flow, which was elucidated through use of a copper marker. A 3D, Lagrangian, thermo-mechanically coupled dedicated numerical model was set up and validated through temperature measurements. The combination of experimental and numerical results permitted to reconstruct the complex 3D material flow induced by tool rotation and plunge into the extrusion billet chamber.

Health Indicator for Low-Speed Axial Bearings Using Variational Autoencoders

This paper proposes a method for calculating a health indicator (HI) for low-speed axial rolling element bearing (REB) health assessment by utilizing the latent representation obtained by variational inference using Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), trained on each speed reference in the dataset. Further, versatility is added by conditioning on the speed, extending the VAE to a conditional VAE (CVAE), thereby incorporating all speeds in a single model. Within the framework, the coefficients of autoregressive (AR) models are used as features. Using infrared thermography in order to compare laser and hybrid (laser plus MIG) welding processes

International audience; In order to deepen the understanding of the differences between laser and laser-arc hybrid welding, comparisons were undertaken using thermography. The experiments were carried out for a T assembly of aluminium alloy plates. Modelling, based on the finite element method approach, was realized using IR temperature measurements and seam geometry. For a value of the power supply, depicted as a surface source in the hybrid case, agreement was found between simulated and measured temperatures. The arc power supply efficiency value is similar to the usually used value.
