Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Oenococcus oeni immobilized in different layers of a cellulose/starch gel composite for simultaneous alcoholic and malol…
2013
Abstract The production of a two-layer composite biocatalyst for immobilization of two different microorganisms for simultaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation (MLF) of wine in the same bioreactor is reported. The biocatalyst consisted of a tubular delignified cellulosic material (DCM) with entrapped Oenococcus oeni cells, covered with starch gel containing the alcohol resistant and cryotolerant strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae AXAZ-1. The biocatalyst was found effective for simultaneous low temperature alcoholic fermentation resulting to conversion of malic acid to lactic acid in 5 days at 10 °C. Improvement of wine quality compared with wine fermented with S. cerevisiae AXAZ-1 immob…
The lateral variation of solid state reactions at surfaces studied by means of photoemission electron microscopy: formation of titanium silicides
2001
The alloying and oxygen reduction at titanium silicon interfaces were studied by means of photoemission microscopy. The microscopic chemical composition of the sample surface was characterised by means of imaging X-ray absorption. The silicide formation was studied at clean and oxidised silicon substrates both covered with micron-sized titanium patterns.

Characterization of MHD convection in thin cell electrodeposition
2009
International audience; We are studying the effect of a magnetic field normal to the cell in electrodeposition of zinc arborescences. When the cell thickness is reduced, the MHD convection, responsible for morphology changes, spiraling, etc. is suppressed, but in a high magnetic field there is still an effect maybe due to small-scale hydrodynamic convection or to the Lorentz force on the growing metallic branches, the "Laplace" force.
Mapping spatial patterns of denitrifiers for bridging community ecology and microbial processes along environmental gradients
2009
While there is ample evidence that microbial processes can exhibit large variations at a field scale, very little is known about the spatial distribution of the communities mediating these processes. The objective of this study was to explore spatial patterns of size and activity of the denitrifying community, a functional guild involved in N-cycling, in a grassland field subjected to different cattle grazing regimes. We used geostatistical modeling to map the distribution of size and activity of the denitrifier community in the pasture. Size of the denitrifier community was estimated by PCR quantification of the denitrification gene copy numbers while its activity was estimated by measurin…

New insights into the use of rhizobia to mitigate soil N2O emissions
2022
Agriculture is a major anthropogenic source of the greenhouse gas N2O, which is also involved in stratospheric ozone depletion. While the use of rhizobial inoculants has already been reported as an emerging option for mitigating soil N2O emissions, this study presents an in situ abatement of 70% of soil N2O emission using the strain nosZ+ G49 vs. nosZ− USDA138 in association with soybean. Therefore, we consider that the choice of the inoculant strain of a leguminous crop should take into account the capacity of strains to reduce nitrous oxide in addition to their N fixation capacity. This study also clearly suggests that this mitigation option could be considered not only for soybean but al…
Insights into the unexplored diversity of the nitrous oxide reducing microbial community
2012
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a major radiative forcing and stratospheric ozone depleting gas emitted from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It can be transformed to N2 by bacteria and archaea harboring the nitrous oxide reductase (N2OR), which is the only known N2O sink in the biosphere. Despite its crucial role in mitigating N2O emissions, knowledge of the N2OR in the environment remains limited. Here, we report a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the nosZ gene coding the N2OR in genomes retrieved from public databases. The resulting phylogeny revealed two distinct clades of nosZ, with one unaccounted for in studies investigating N2O reducing communities. Examination of N2OR structural el…
Iron oxide superparamagnetic nanocarriers bearing amphiphilic N-heterocyclic choline analogues as potential antimicrobial agents
2015
Magnetic nanoparticles represent an advanced tool in biomedicine because they can be simultaneously functionalized and guided using a magnetic field. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles precoated with oleic acid and bearing novel antimicrobial N-heterocyclic choline analogues, namely O-, N- and O,N-bis-undecyl-substituted N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolinium derivatives, have been obtained as potential biomedical agents for drug delivery and antimicrobial therapy. Structural and size determinations for the novel synthesized magnetic nanosystems were carried out based upon magnetogranulometry, dynamic light-scattering measurements and X-ray diffraction analysis. The most expecte…
