Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a systematic procedure for analyzing a system (the entire system or just an assembly, subassembly or component) to identify potential failure modes, causes and effects of each failure on system operation. A somewhat different definition was formulated by Goddard Space Flight Center (USA) : FMEA is a procedure whereby every credible way of defeating each item from the lower decomposition level to the highest level is analyzed to determine effects on the system and classify each potential way of failure according to the severity of its effect.

The concentration of phenylalanine in plasma, whole venous and capillary blood, and paper-dried blood of 75 probands (25 healthy adults, 27 healthy children, and 23 patients with hyperphenylalaninaemia) were measured by use of a sensitive short column chromatography method. The comparison of the values in each group of probands by several statistic methods showed an excellent correlation of the phenylalanine concentration in paper-dried whole blood to those measured in venous plasma. Evaluation of the analytical method revealed a high sensitivity and accuracy by use of a sample volume of 50 microliter. A newly proposed quantum chemical approach for ab initio calculations of electronic spectra of molecular systems is applied to the molecules ethene, trans‐1,3‐butadiene, and trans‐trans‐1,3,5‐hexatriene. The method has the aim of being accurate to better than 0.5 eV for excitation energies and is expected to provide structural and physical data for the excited states with good reliability. Much of science is (rightly or wrongly) driven by hypothesis testing. Even in situations where the hypothesis testing paradigm is correct, the common practice of basing inferences solely on p-values has been under intense criticism for over 50 years. We propose, as an alternative, the use of the odds of a correct rejection of the null hypothesis to incorrect rejection. Learning from Errors: Detecting ZigBee Interference in WiFi Networks

In this work we show how to detect ZigBee interference on commodity WiFi cards by monitoring the reception errors, such as synchronization errors, invalid header formats, too long frames, etc., caused by ZigBee transmissions. Indeed, in presence of non-WiFi modulated signals, the occurrence of these types of errors follows statistics that can be easily recognized. Moreover, the duration of the error bursts depends on the transmission interval of the interference source, while the error spacing depends on the receiver implementation. Purpose To assess the intrasession and intersession precision of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) measured using a commercial Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor (Zywave; Bausch & Lomb) in refractive surgery candidates. An edit distance is a metric between words that quantifies how two words differ by counting the number of edit operations needed to transform one word into the other one. A word f is said isometric with respect to an edit distance if, for any pair of f-free words u and v, there exists a transformation of minimal length from u to v via the related edit operations such that all the intermediate words are also f-free.
