Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Useful Sorbents for Bioanalysis
2022
The determination of various active compounds in different types of biological samples attracts recently considerable attention. Unfortunately, the complexity of such sample matrices requires the application of multistage analytical procedures, which by many analysts is considered the most critical step in the whole analytical process. Sample preparation techniques dedicated to bioanalysis must ensure effective isolation and enrichment of various, often trace, amounts of analytes. Furthermore, the high selectivity of extraction of the target analytes, in relation to other interfering substances co-presented in the sample, is important in this case. Therefore, over the last two decades, the …
Pterostilbene: Biomedical applications
2013
Resveratrol and its naturally dimethylated analog, pterostilbene, show similar biological activities. However, the higher in vivo bioavailability of pterostilbene represents a fundamental advantage. The main focus of this review is on biomedical applications of pterostilbene. The metabolism and pharmacokinetics of this stilbene in inflammatory dermatoses and photoprotection, cancer prevention and therapy, insulin sensitivity, blood glycemia and lipid levels, cardiovascular diseases, aging, and memory and cognition are addressed. Safety and toxicity, as well as recommendations for future research and biomedical uses, are discussed. This review includes comparisons between pterostilbene and o…
Local Directional Multi Radius Binary Pattern
2018
Face recognition becomes an important task performed routinely in our daily lives. This application is encouraged by the wide availability of powerful and low-cost desktop and embedded computing systems, while the need comes from the integration in too much real world systems including biometric authentication, surveillance, human-computer interaction, and multimedia management. This article proposes a new variant of LBP descriptor referred as Local Directional Multi Radius Binary Pattern (LDMRBP) as a robust and effective face descriptor. The proposed LDMRBP operator is built using new neighborhood topology and new pattern encoding scheme. The adopted face recognition system consists of th…
Pulsed electric fields (PEF), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and combined PEF + PLE process evaluation: Effects on Spirulina microstructure, bio…
2022
This study aims at evaluating the impact of different processes-pulsed electric fields (PEF), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and a multistep process combining PEF + PLE on the yield of antioxidant compounds (protein, polyphenols, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids) from Spirulina. Firstly, the effects of PEF or PLE treatment on the extraction yield of Spirulina biomolecules were evaluated. To further increase the extraction yield, PEF + PLE was used, as an innovative extraction approach. The results showed that PEF + PLE greatly improved the extraction yield compared with the PEF or PLE treatments alone. Compared with Folch extraction (conventional control technique), PEF + …
Analysis of emerging contaminants and nanomaterials in plant materials following uptake from soils
2017
The reuse of treated wastewater or wastewater-impacted river water is growing, particularly in arid areas, due to the climate change. As well, the disposal of sludges, biosolids or biochar as soil amendments to improve agricultural output is widely implemented in the EU. These practices can be a source of emerging contaminants and engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) to the environment and condition their incorporation to food chain that could affect human beings. This review covers current analytical techniques, instruments and methodologies used to determine emerging contaminants and ENMs from irrigation water and/or soil amendments in plants. Trends regarding sample treatment, separation and…
Isolation and identification of intermediates from biodegradation of low chlorinated biphenyls (Delor-103).
2004
Abstract Microorganism Pseudomonas species P2 metabolizes polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and biphenyl, producing the whole spectrum of intermediates, among them coloured intermediates, which are suitable for the monitoring of PCBs degradation by optical sensors. Knowledge of chemical structures and conditions of development of colour metabolites is necessary for application of optical analytical methods. The main goal of this work was the isolation and identification of intermediates from the biodegradation of the mixture of low chlorinated biphenyls (Delor-103), which is based on the solid phase extraction (SPE) of the whole mixture using LiChrolut EN cartridges, then silylation of the e…
Bis(crown ethers) derived from biphenyl: extraction and electrochemical properties
2004
Abstract Ligands derived from 4,4′-dinitrobiphenyl containing azacrown cavities in the 2,2′ position have been used in extraction and transport experiments. Control experiments with a system containing only one complexing cavity have demonstrated that the capability of forming a sandwich-type complex in the aforementioned ligand not only increases extraction but also the transport across a liquid membrane. Extraction studies have also shown that the complex present in the membrane has a 1:1 stoichiometry with regard to both ligands. Electrochemical studies have also been carried out. The ligand containing two complexing cavities is capable of giving rise to a 2:1 complex under electrochemic…
New macrocycles derived from biphenyl for pH-switched solvent extraction
2006
Abstract Four new fluorescent macrocyclic ligands derived from biphenyl are described. The new compounds have been used in liquid–liquid extraction experiments and the influence of pH has been studied in those ligands containing carboxylic groups. The results obtained for the latter ligands have been compared with those observed in the presence of an external acid.
Analytical strategies for organic food packaging contaminants
2016
In this review, we present current approaches in the analysis of food-packaging contaminants. Gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection have been widely used in the analysis of some relevant families of these compounds such as primary aromatic amines, bisphenol A, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and related compounds, UV-ink photoinitiators, perfluorinated compounds, phthalates and non-intentionally added substances. Main applications for sample treatment and different types of food-contact material migration studies have been also discussed. Pressurized Liquid Extraction, Solid-Phase Microextraction, Focused Ultrasound Solid-Liquid Extraction and Quechers have been …
Simultaneous determination of bisphenol A, octylphenol, and nonylphenol by pressurised liquid extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectr…
2011
Abstract A new analytical method, using pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS), was developed for the simultaneous determination of bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP) and nonylphenol (NP) in powdered infant formulas (IF) and powdered skimmed milk (PM). The analytes were extracted by PLE, using this optimised conditions: ethyl acetate as solvent, 70 °C of temperature, reversed-phase silica C18 as dispersing agent and three cycles of extraction. The extracts were then injected in LC–MS/MS using a Gemini C18 column and a mixture of 5% water and 95% methanol/acetonitrile, both with 0.1% ammonia, as a mobile phase. Recoveries at differe…
