Phenolic metabolites from 5,000-year-old coprolites of Myotragus balearicus, an extinct insular bovid
2020
Abstract To date, the identification of polyphenols in the archaeological and palaeontological record has been limited. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the presence of flavonoid and phenolic metabolites from non-mineralised coprolites belonging to a non-human mammal species. Myotragus balearicus is the last species of a bovid lineage that became extinct during the Holocene in the western Mediterranean basin. In this work, we characterize the phenolic metabolites of M. balearicus coprolites for the first time. The chemical analysis of coprolites revealed the presence of flavonoids, such as flavones and flavonols. Moreover, the detection of conjugates of hydroxyphenylvaleric, hydroxyp…
Flavonoids from Teucrium fruticans L.
2014
From aerial parts of <em>Teucrium fncticans</em> L. three flavonoids were isolated and identified as 5-hydroxy-6, 7, 3', 4'-tetramethoxyflavone, 5, 4'-dihydroxy-6, 7, 3'-trimethoxyflavone (cirsilineol) and 5, 4'-dihydroxy-6, 7-dimethoxyflavone (cirsimaritin). The former compound was found to be a predominant flavone aglycone constituent of the plant material. This is the first report on the isolation of flavonoids from the plant.
Influence of solvents on the antioxidant property of flavonoids.
2003
In polyphenols redox systems, the solvent plays a fundamental role in the chemical behaviour of these compounds. Antioxidants can react in different ways with the prooxidant molecules. We have found differences in the antioxidant capacity of flavonoids such as naringin, neohesperidin, neoericitrin, hesperidin, narirutin didymin and the related flavones naringenin, hesperetin eriodictyol and isosakuratenin, when they are in the presence of radicals and solved in water or in an alcohol mixture.
Phenolic and acetylenic metabolites from Artemisia assoana
1987
Abstract Nine flavones, three coumarins, two flavone glycosides, p-hydroxyacetophenone and methyl caffeate have been isolated from the aerial parts of Artemisia assoana. Six diacetylenic spiroketal enol-ethers, a mixture of n-alkyl p-coumarates and a new phenylpropanoid metabolite, sinapyl alcohol diisovalerate, have been isolated from root extracts of the same plant. 1H and 13C NMR spectra of some of these compounds are given and taxonomic aspects are discussed.
Flavones, sesquiterpene lactones and glycosides isolated from Centaurea aspera var. Stenophylla
1984
Abstract From the alcoholic extract of Centaurea aspera var. stenophylla benzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, apigenin, 6-methoxyluteolin, 11,13-dehydromelitensin, melitensin, stenophyliolide, ethyl-7-O-apigenin-glucuronate and the glucosides of sitosterol and stigmasterol were isolated and characterized. Stenophyllolide was shown to be 9,15-dihydroxygermacra-1(10),4,11-trien-12,6-olide.
Neo-clerodane diterpenoids from Teucrium kotschyanum
1989
Abstract From the aerial parts of Teucrium kotschyanum three new neo-clerodane diterpenoids have been isolated. Their structures, (12R)-15,16-epoxy-19-nor-10α-neo-cleroda-4,13(16),14-triene-18,6β; 20,12-diolide (12-epiteucvidin), (12R)-15,16-epoxy-19-nor-neo-cleroda-4,13(16),14-triene-18,6β; 20,12-diolide (12-epiteufiin) and (12S,18R)-15,16-epoxy-6β-hydroxy-neo-cleroda-13(16),14-dien-20,12-olide-l8,19-hemiacetal (teukotschyn), have been established by chemical and spectroscopic means. In addition, ursolic acid, the flavones cirsimaritin and cirsiliol, and six previously known neo-clerodane diterpenoids (teucvidin, teuflin, teuscorodin, teucrin H2, teuscorodonin and montanin D) were also fou…
Daidzein has neuroprotective effects through ligand-binding-independent PPARγ activation.
2011
Phytoestrogens are a group of plant-derived compounds that include mainly isoflavones like daidzein. Phytoestrogens prevent neuronal damage and improve outcome in experimental stroke; however, the mechanisms of this neuroprotective action have not been fully elucidated. In this context, it has been postulated that phytoestrogens might activate the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), which exerts neuroprotective effects in several settings. The aim of this study was to determine whether the phytoestrogen daidzein elicits beneficial actions in neuronal cells by mechanisms involving activation of PPARγ. Our results show that daidzein (0.05-5 μM) decreases cell death induced b…
Switching from Aromatase Inhibitors to Dual Targeting Flavonoid-Based Compounds for Breast Cancer Treatment
2023
Despite the significant outcomes attained by scientific research, breast cancer (BC) still represents the second leading cause of death in women. Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) BC accounts for the majority of diagnosed BCs, highlighting the disruption of estrogenic signalling as target for first-line treatment. This goal is presently pursued by inhibiting aromatase (AR) enzyme or by modulating Estrogen Receptor (ER) α. An appealing strategy for fighting BC and reducing side effects and resistance issues may lie in the design of multifunctional compounds able to simultaneously target AR and ER. In this paper, previously reported flavonoid-related potent AR inhibitors were suitably modified…
Anti-phospholipase A2 and anti-inflammatory activity of Santolina chamaecyparissus
2000
The activity of the Santolina chamaecyparissus methanol extract was tested against the phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-induced mouse paw edema and in vitro inhibition of PLA2 activity. After fractionation, only the dichloromethane extract was active against the PLA2 in vitro test. In addition, it reduced the edema induced by arachidonic acid, and by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate in a multidose test. After chromatography on silicagel and gel filtration on Sephadex, and using an in vitro anti-PLA2 assay-guided process, we have isolated and identified from the dichloromethane extract the flavone nepetin and four sesquiterpenes.
Anti-inflammatory activity of 5-O-demethylnobiletin, a polymethoxyflavone isolated from Sideritis tragoriganum.
2006
We have studied the effect of 5- O-demethylnobiletin ( 1) on both the inflammation of mouse ears induced by repeated application of 12- O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) and the acute mouse paw oedemas induced by carrageenan and phospholipase A (2) (PLA (2)), and determined its activity on 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and elastase release/activity. Compound 1 reduced the oedema formation, cell infiltration, and tissue damage in the inflammation induced by TPA in mouse ears, along with the acute oedema induced by carrageenan in mouse paws and the acute PLA (2)-induced oedema in mouse paws. The flavone inhibited leukotriene B (4) formation in rat neutrophils and elastase release in human neut…
