Synovial giant cells in rheumatoid arthritis: Expression of cystatin C, but not of cathepsin B
2000
This study was designed to investigate the expression of the matrix degrading proteinase cathepsin B and its endogenous inhibitor cystatin C in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with special regard to multinucleated synovial giant cells (SGC). We applied an immunohistochemical double-labeling technique. SGC strongly expressed cystatin C and CD68, but were negative for cathepsin B. This staining pattern occurred in osteoclasts as well. Our findings support the idea that in RA matrix destruction by cathepsin B is not mediated by SGC or osteoclasts, but by mononuclear synoviocytes.
Water Fluxes in Polymeric Membranes for Desalination via Membrane Distillation
2010
Membrane distillation is an emerging technique for seawater desalination. Hydrophobic polymeric membranes are used to separate the solute‐free water vapour from the hot solution. Vapour fluxes of commercial polymeric membranes were measured in various conditions, i.e. natural and forced convection and vacuum. Vapour fluxes were also predicted with models and compared with experimentals. Higher fluxes were recorded in vacuum conditions.
Nitrous oxide emissions in a membrane bioreactor treating saline wastewater contaminated by hydrocarbons
2016
The joint effect of wastewater salinity and hydrocarbons on nitrous oxide emission was investigated. The membrane bioreactor pilot plant was operated with two phases: i. biomass acclimation by increasing salinity from 10 gNaCl L−1 to 20 gNaCl L−1 (Phase I); ii. hydrocarbons dosing at 20 mg L−1 with a constant salt concentration of 20 gNaCl L−1 (Phase II). The Phase I revealed a relationship between nitrous oxide emissions and salinity. During the end of the Phase I, the activity of nitrifiers started to recover, indicating a partial acclimatization. During the Phase II, the hydrocarbon shock induced a temporary inhibition of the biomass with the suppression of nitrous oxide emissions. The r…
Novel method for determination of tritium depth profiles in metallic samples
2019
Tritium accumulation in fusion reactor materials is considered a serious radiological issue, therefore a lot of effort has been concentrated on the development of radiometric techniques. A novel method, based on gradual dissolution, for the determination of the total tritium content and its depth profiles in metallic samples is demonstrated. This method allows for the measurement of tritium in metallic samples after their exposure to a hydrogen and tritium mixture, tritium containing plasma or after irradiation with neutrons resulting in tritium formation. In this method, successive layers of metal are removed using an appropriate etching agent in the controlled regime and the amount of evo…
Myocardial Glutathione Alterations in Acute Coronary Occlusion in the Dog
1987
Glutathione (GSH) decreases in dog mycocardium upon acute coronary occlusion when compared with sham-operated dogs. Total glutathione content (GSHeq = GSH + ZGSSG) remains unchanged throughout the experiment (6 h after surgery) in both sham- and acute coronary occlusion-operated dogs. GSSG and GSH/GSSG ratio increases and decreases respectively in all animals but tends to reach the normal value after 6 h in sham-operated dogs. Both parameters (GSSG and GSH/GSSG ratio) remain altered in acute coronary occlusion-operated ones. This alteration of glutathione status in ischemic myocardium is discussed.
Octave Spanning Supercontinuum in Titanium Dioxide Waveguides
2018
International audience; We report on the experimental generation of an octave-spanning supercontinuum in a 2.2 cm-long titanium dioxide optical waveguide with two zero dispersion wavelengths. The resulting on-chip supercontinuum reaches the visible wavelength range as well as the mid-infrared region by using a femtosecond fiber laser pump at 1.64 µm.

Darbā iegūti analītiskie atrisinājumi magnetohidrodinamiskiem (MHD) uzdevumiem par elektrovadoša šķidruma plūsmu plakanā un cilindriskā kanālā stiprā magnētiskā laukā gadījumiem, kad šķidrums ietek kanālos caur galīga platuma spraugu vai caur galīga rādiusa atveri kanāla sānu malā. Pamatojoties uz iegūtajiem atrisinājumiem, veikta plūsmas ātruma lauka skaitliskā analīze. Iegūti uzdevumu asimptotiskie atrisinājumi lieliem Hartmana skaitļiem. Turklāt darbā pētīta pilna spiediena spēka šķidruma ieplūdes apgabalā atkarība no funkcijas veida, ar kuru ir uzdots ātruma robežnosacījums. Pētījums veikts analītiski, risinot divas hidrodinamiskas problēmas un divas MHD problēmas par viskoza šķidruma i…
In Vitro and In Vivo Regulation of SRD5A mRNA Expression of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extract from Asparagus racemosus Willd. Root as Anti-Sebum a…
2022
Oily skin from overactive sebaceous glands affects self-confidence and personality. There is report of an association between steroid 5-alpha reductase gene (SRD5A) expression and facial sebum production. There is no study of the effect of Asparagus racemosus Willd. root extract on the regulation of SRD5A mRNA expression and anti-sebum efficacy. This study extracted A. racemosus using the supercritical carbon dioxide fluid technique with ethanol and investigated its biological compounds and activities. The A. racemosus root extract had a high content of polyphenolic compounds, including quercetin, naringenin, and p-coumaric acid, and DPPH scavenging activity comparable to that of the standa…
Iodine Deficiency in Latvia: Current Status and Need for National Recommendations
2017
Abstract In the absence of a mandatory salt iodisation programme, two nationwide cross-sectional cluster surveys revealed persisting iodine deficiency among Latvian schoolchildren during the spring season and a noteworthy iodine deficiency in pregnant women in Latvia; these deficiencies warrant intervention. The consequences of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation can adversely affect foetal brain development. Data from a Latvian population survey revealed the consumption of approximately 100 μg of iodine per day through foods and iodised salt. Therefore, strategies to increase the consumption of iodine-containing products should be implemented, particularly for…
Milk as an Essential Source of Iodine in Latvian Population
2017
Abstract Milk and dairy products are studied as alternative iodine sources, because salt iodisation is controversial due to high salt consumption leading to cardiovascular diseases. However, the iodine concentration in milk markedly varies. This study evaluated the iodine concentration in cow’s milk available in the Latvian market. Iodine and fat concentration was analysed with a spectrophotometer “Varian Cary 50” based ISO 2446:2008 in 20 milk samples. Data from the Central Statistical Bureau and survey among pregnant women were used to analyse milk product consumption and its impact on iodine status. Average iodine concentration in milk samples was 457.6 (179.6) μg/L, winter samples had a…
