Benign focal liver lesions: spectrum of findings on SonoVue-enhanced pulse-inversion ultrasonography.

2005

The prevalence of benign focal liver lesions (BFLL) is high both in the general population and in patients with known malignancies. The gray-scale ultrasound (US) technique is usually the first-line imaging modality used in the radiological workup of such lesions, but unfortunately it lacks specificity. Furthermore, Doppler examination may often be unsatisfactory owing to motion artefacts, or when small or deeply located lesions are evaluated. Recently, microbubble-based contrast agents used in combination with gray-scale US techniques, which are very sensitive to nonlinear behavior of microbubbles, have led to a better depiction of both microvasculature and macrovasculature of focal hepati…

Resistance to demineralisation of adjacent enamel and dentine, fluoride release and dentine bond strength of fluoride-containing self-etch adhesive s…

2019

Background The current study aimed to assess the amount of fluoride released from fluoride-containing dental adhesives and its effect on micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) and on resistance to demineralisation of dentine and enamel. Material and Methods Two fluoride-containing dental adhesives, and a fluoride-free adhesive were used as experimental adhesives. After thermal cycling the µ-TBS of adhesives to dentine and the failure mode were assessed. The fluoride release and cross-sectional microhardness (CSMH) of specimens were measured before and after one day, 7 and 28 days of pH-cycling. The data were analysed using one-way ANOVA, Weibull statistics and repeated measures ANOVA. Results T…

ESCA-Analysis of tin compounds on the surface of hydroxyapatite

1997

The formation of tin compounds on the surface of hydroxyapatite, the main crystalline component of teeth, is discussed controversially. SnF2 is used as an anticaries agent in toothpaste preparations. Pure hydroxyapatite (HAP) is treated with extracts of commercially available toothpastes containing tin fluoride and analyzed by electron spectroscopy (ESCA). Survey spectra and depth profiles are recorded. The chemical shifts measured for the HAP samples are compared with those of standard tin compounds. It is concluded that on the surface of hydroxyapatite a mixture of two-valent fluoro-phosphato compounds is formed. SnO is not found in the mixture.

Structural insights into the GTPase domain of Escherichia coli MnmE protein

2007

The Escherichia coli MnmE protein is a 50-kDa multidomain GTPase involved in tRNA modification. Its homologues in eukaryotes are crucial for mitochondrial respiration and, thus, it is thought that the human protein might be involved in mitochondrial diseases. Unlike Ras, MnmE shows a high intrinsic GTPase activity and requires effective GTP hydrolysis, and not simply GTP binding, to be functionally active. The isolated MnmE G-domain (165 residues) conserves the GTPase activity of the entire protein, suggesting that it contains the catalytic residues for GTP hydrolysis. To explore the GTP hydrolysis mechanism of MnmE, we analyzed the effect of low pH on binding and hydrolysis of GTP, as well…

EPR studies of the oxyfluoride glass ceramics using Mn2+as a paramagnetic probe

2010

In this work, we used Mn2+ as a dopant in the oxyfluoride glasses with various fluoride compounds. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements were carried out before and after a heat treatment of the material. In both cases, a well pronounced hyperfine (hf) structure of the EPR spectra characteristic to the Mn2+ ion have been observed. EPR measurements have also been studied for the separate fluoride counterparts of the oxyfluoride glasses. EPR spectra of the LaF3:Mn2+ and CaF2:Mn2+ powders show that Mn2+ ion has a strong superhyperfine (shf) interaction with surrounding fluorine nuclei, and this shf structure could be observed also in the heat treated glass samples.

First analysis of the ν3+ν5 combination band of SF6 observed at Doppler-limited resolution and effective model for the ν3+ν5-ν5 hot band

2018

Abstract Sulfur hexafluoride is a greenhouse gas with a long lifetime in the atmosphere and an important tracer for air mass circulation atmospheric models. The IR spectrum of this heavy species, however, features many hot bands at room temperature (at which only 30% of the molecules lie in the ground vibrational state), especially those originating from the lowest, v 6 and v 5 = 1 vibrational states. Using a cryogenic long path cell with variable optical path length and temperatures regulated between 168 and 163 K, coupled to Synchrotron Radiation and a high resolution interferometer, Doppler-limited spectra of the very weak ν 3 + ν 5 band near 1450 cm−1 have been recorded. Low temperature…

Corrosion protection of Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets by zinc phosphate surface conversion coatings

2001

Abstract The use of protective zinc phosphate top coatings to protect Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets against corrosion is discussed. The progress of the phosphatisation process has been tested by simultaneous measurement of pH near surface, corrosion potential, substrate mass loss and phosphate coating mass gain. The corrosion behaviour of the magnet in phosphate solution was analyzed by the anodic polarization technique and the general resistance of the magnet to corrosion was evaluated by the Akimov drop test. It is shown that immersion of the magnet in the acidified (pH=2) phosphating solution containing Zn(II), nitrate and fluoride ions resulted in the formation of well adhered, thin an…

Liver haemangiomas undetermined at grey-scale ultrasound: contrast-enhancement patterns with SonoVue and pulse-inversion US.

2005

The objective of this study was to describe the spectrum of contrast-enhancement patterns of hepatic haemangiomas undetermined at grey-scale ultrasound (US) on SonoVue-enhanced pulse-inversion (PI) US. Twenty patients (11 women, nine men) with 35 haemangiomas (size range: 1-7 cm; mean: 3.1 cm) undetermined at baseline US underwent PI at low M.I. (0.05-0.08) after i.v. injection of SonoVue. All haemangiomas were confirmed by typical helical computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. US examinations were videotaped and then reviewed by two experienced radiologists blinded to the final diagnosis. Readers evaluated by consensus the baseline echogenicity and the d…

Photoactivity of shape-controlled TiO2 in gas-solid regime under solar irradiation

2019

Abstract Differently shape-controlled anatase TiO2 materials were tested as photocatalysts under both simulated and natural solar irradiation. Their photocatalytic activity in 2-propanol and propene partial oxidation and in the complete mineralization of acetaldehyde appears to increase with decreasing the shape control of the TiO2 material. This insight seems to be related to the residual presence of the templating species (fluoride anions) employed during the preparation of the shape-controlled TiO2 materials. In fact, the calcination of the powders, leading to levelling of the fluoride ions content, but also to a remarkable surface area decrease, gave rise to an increase of photocatalyti…
