A comparison of the transcriptome of Drosophila melanogaster in response to entomopathogenic fungus, ionizing radiation, starvation and cold shock

2015

Background The molecular mechanisms that determine the organism's response to a variety of doses and modalities of stress factors are not well understood. Results We studied effects of ionizing radiation (144, 360 and 864 Gy), entomopathogenic fungus (10 and 100 CFU), starvation (16 h), and cold shock (+4, 0 and -4°C) on an organism's viability indicators (survival and locomotor activity) and transcriptome changes in the Drosophila melanogaster model. All stress factors but cold shock resulted in a decrease of lifespan proportional to the dose of treatment. However, stress-factors affected locomotor activity without correlation with lifespan. Our data revealed both significant similarities …

Drought-induced positive feedback in xylophagous insects: Easier invasion of Scots pine leading to greater investment in immunity of emerging individ…

2012

Abstract We studied the infestation rate of Scots pine Pinus sylvestris by xylophagous insects in relation to distance from forest lakes in eastern Latvia, northern Europe. In summers of 2008 and 2009, we felled 72 pines of approximately 65 years age. Sections of the logs were incubated in insect emergence traps. The trees located near lakes were significantly less infested by xylophagous insects than those sampled at greater distances from the lakes. We also tested the ability of Tomicus piniperda , the most abundant species of xylophagous insects in our samples, to resist the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana . The results show that beetles captured near lakes were more susceptib…

ChemInform Abstract: Lasiolactols A and B Produced by the Grapevine Fungal Pathogen Lasiodiplodia mediterranea

2016

A strain of Lasiodiplodia mediterranea, a fungus associated with grapevine decline in Sicily, produced several metabolites in liquid medium. Two new dimeric γ-lactols, lasiolactols A and B (1 and 2), were characterized as (2S*,3S*,4R*,5R*,2'S*,3'S*,4'R*,5'R*)- and (2R*,3S*,4R*,5R*,2'R*,3'S*,4'R*,5'R*)-(5-(4-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethyl-tetrahydro-furan-2-yloxy)-2,4-dimethyl-tetrahydro-furan-3-yl]-methanols by IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR, and HR-ESI-MS. Other four metabolites were identified as botryosphaeriodiplodin, (5R)-5-hydroxylasiodiplodin, (-)-(1R,2R)-jasmonic acid, and (-)-(3S,4R,5R)-4-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethyldihydro-2-furanone (3 - 6, resp.). The absolute configuration (R) at hydroxylated se…

Milzu apaļpūpēdis 103 cm apkārtmērā

2019

On September 2nd, 1922, the 103 cm in circumference giant puffball fungus was found in the park of the Rīgas Sarkankalna vājprātīgo iestāde. Nowadays it is in the Botany and Mycology collections of the Museum of the University of Latvia. The article provides information on finding and sending the fungus to the University of Latvia, as well as a description of the species of the giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea).

Imprints of latitude, host taxon, and decay stage on fungus-associated arthropod communities

2022

Interactions among fungi and insects involve hundreds of thousands of species. While insect communities on plants have formed some of the classic model systems in ecology, fungus-based communities and the forces structuring them remain poorly studied by comparison. We characterize the arthropod communities associated with fruiting bodies of eight mycorrhizal basidiomycete fungus species from three different orders along a 1200-km latitudinal gradient in northern Europe. We hypothesized that, matching the pattern seen for most insect taxa on plants, we would observe a general decrease in fungal-associated species with latitude. Against this backdrop, we expected local communities to be struc…

A New Tetrahydrofuran Derivative from the Endophytic Fungus Chaetomium sp. Isolated from Otanthus maritimus

2009

1 A hitherto unidentified endophytic strain of the genus Chaetomium, isolated from the medicinal plant Otanthus maritimus, yielded a new tetrahydrofuran derivative, aureonitolic acid (), along with 5 known natural products, 2 - 6. The structure of 1 was determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with reported data. Extracts of the fungus, grown either in liquid culture or on solid rice media, exhibited considerable cytotoxic activity when tested in vitro against L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells. Compounds 2 and 6 showed significant growth inhibition against L5178Y cells with EC50 values of 7.0 and 2.7 μg/mL, respectively, whereas 1 was inactive

Sesquiterpenoids from the Endophytic Fungus Rhinocladiella similis

2019

Ten new sesquiterpenoid derivatives, rhinomilisins A-J (1-10), along with six known analogues (11-16), were isolated from the mangrove-derived endophytic fungus Rhinocladiella similis. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by their NMR and MS data, while the absolute configuration of 3 and 6 was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis and Mosher's method, respectively. All isolated compounds (1-16) were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against the mouse lymphoma cell line L5178Y, and compounds 1, 7, and 15 showed moderate activity with IC50 values of 5.0, 8.7, and 24.4 μM, respectively.

A new depsidone derivative from mangrove sediment derived fungus

2018

A new depsidone derivative botryorhodine I (1), along with eight known compounds (2-9) were obtained from solid rice cultures of the fungal strain, Lasiodiplodia theobromae M4.2-2 isolated from a mangrove sediment sample. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of 1 D and 2 D NMR analysis as well as by HRESIMS. All compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic potential against the mouse lymphoma cell line L5178Y as well as for their antibacterial activities against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Compound 3 revealed potent cytotoxic activity with an IC50 of 7.3 µM whereas compound 7 showed selective anti-bacterial activity against …

Farinomalein derivatives from an unidentified endophytic fungus isolated from the mangrove plant Avicennia marina

2012

Five farinomalein derivatives including three new compounds, farinomaleins C–E (3–5), and one new isoindoline congener (6) were isolated from an unidentified endophytic fungus obtained from the inner tissues of healthy leaves of the mangrove plant Avicennia marina from Oman. The structures of the new compounds were unambiguously elucidated on the basis of their mass, as well as one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopic data.

Phenguignardic acid and guignardic acid, phytotoxic secondary metabolites from Guignardia bidwellii.

2012

Bioactivity-guided isolation led to the identification of phenguignardic acid (2), a new phytotoxic secondary metabolite from submerged cultures of grape black rot fungus, Guignardia bidwellii. The compound is structurally related to guignardic acid (1), a dioxolanone moiety-containing metabolite isolated previously from Guignardia species. However, in contrast to guignardic acid, which is presumably synthesized from deamination products of valine and phenylalanine, the biochemical precursor for the biosynthesis of the new phytotoxin appears to be exclusively phenylalanine. Guignardic acid was also found in extracts of cultures from Guignardia bidwellii. The phytotoxic activities of both co…
