Novel two-step synthesis of gold nanoparticles capped with bile acid conjugates

2008

Bile acids and their conjugates are physiologically important molecules. Syntheses and structure elucidation combined with investigation of properties and applications of bile acids and their derivatives are of academic interest. The concept of using bile acids and their conjugates in nanoscience is a novel idea, which opens up fascinating prospects. In this article, an easy and simple route for obtaining N-lithocholyl-L-(cysteine ethyl ester) (3), capable of effectively capping and stabilizing metal nanoparticles, is described. The whole synthetic route needs only two steps giving a moderate to good yield. The gold NPs are characterized by elemental analysis, UV spectroscopy, and TEM. Addi…

The PHES battery does not detect all cirrhotic patients with early neurological deficits, which are different in different patients.

2017

Background and aims The psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES) is the “gold standard” for minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) diagnosis. Some reports suggest that some cirrhotic patients “without” MHE according to PHES show neurological deficits and other reports that neurological alterations are not homogeneous in all cirrhotic patients. This work aimed to assess whether: 1) a relevant proportion of cirrhotic patients show neurological deficits not detected by PHES; 2) cirrhotic patients with mild neurological deficits are a homogeneous population or may be classified in sub-groups according to specific deficits. Methods Cirrhotic patients “without” (n = 56) or “with” MHE (n = 4…

Manipulating and squeezing the photon local density of states with plasmonic nanoparticle networks

2010

International audience; In this Brief Report, we show that when interconnected networks of gold particles are deposited onto a clean planar surface, they strongly modify the photonic local density of states LDOS in the immediate proximity of the self-assembled nanoparticles. They represent unique architectures for the subwavelength patterning of initially flat photonic LDOS. Moreover, we show that their local spectral signatures are well suited for the generation of sites able to enhance molecular fluorescence intensity.

Simultaneous detection of copper and mercury in water samples using in-situ pH control with electrochemical stripping techniques

2023

The performance of electrochemical sensors using an in situ pH control technique for detection of mercury and copper in neutral solutions is described herein. Sensors are comprised of two distinct parallel gold interdigitated microband electrodes each of which may be polarised separately. Biasing one interdigitated “protonator” electrode sufficiently positive to begin water electrolysis, resulted in the production of H+ ions, which, consequently droped the interfacial pH at the other second interdigitated “sensing” electrode. This decrease in pH permitted the electrodeposition (and consequent stripping) of metals at a sensing electrode without the need to acidify the whole test solution. In…

Didactics of mathematics and architecture: the golden ratio in la Lonja de Valencia

2016

[EN] This paper has a twofold purpose. First, to structure and relate a teaching experience on the tutoring of a graduation work in Mathematics made in the University of Valencia. The main property of the didactic purpose involved in the project is that it deals with the geometric properties of a landmark building of the city of Valencia. Our aim is to analyze the process of formulation, firming up, documentation and elaboration of the work that was followed during this experience. Second, to analyze the methodology used to obtain and valuate the results that come from one of the fundamental parts of this work: the harmonic decomposition of the building named Lonja de la Seda in Valencia

Gold(I)-doped films: new routes for efficient room temperature phosphorescent materials

2021

The synthesis of four novel gold(I)-phosphane complexes coordinated to 9-phenanthrene chromophore has been carried out through the reaction of 9-phenanthreneboronic acid and the corresponding AuClPR3 (PR3 = PPh3 for triphenylphosphane (1a); 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)butane or dppb (2b); bis(diphenylphosphanyl)acetylene or dppa (2c); (AuCl)2(diphos) (diphos = bis(diphenylphosphanyl)methane or dppm (3)) sources. The X-ray crystal structures of compounds 1a and 2b show the existence of MOF-like intermolecular assemblies that contain empty inner cavities in the absence of aurophilic contacts. In contrast, the formation of a tetranuclear complex with intramolecular aurophilic interactions was e…

Gold nanostars co-coated with the Cu(II) complex of a tetraazamacrocyclic ligand

2015

The twelve-membered tetraazamacrocyclic ligand L1 bears an appended lipoic acid unit, whose disulphide ring is an efficient grafting moiety for the surface of gold nanostars (GNS). The GNS that were used featured a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption at ∼800 nm, i.e. in the near infrared (NIR). We investigated different approaches for coating them with the Cu(2+) complex of L1. While the direct reaction of [CuL1](2+) with as-prepared GNS led to aggregation, an initial coating step with polyethyleneglycol-thiol (PEG-SH) was found to be advantageous. Displacement reactions were carried out on pegylated GNS either with [CuL1](2+), directly generating [Cun(L1@GNS)](2n+), or wi…

A smart and operator independent system to delineate tumours in Positron Emission Tomography scans

2018

Abstract Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging has an enormous potential to improve radiation therapy treatment planning offering complementary functional information with respect to other anatomical imaging approaches. The aim of this study is to develop an operator independent, reliable, and clinically feasible system for biological tumour volume delineation from PET images. Under this design hypothesis, we combine several known approaches in an original way to deploy a system with a high level of automation. The proposed system automatically identifies the optimal region of interest around the tumour and performs a slice-by-slice marching local active contour segmentation. It automa…

Polymeric monolithic microcartridges with gold nanoparticles for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary elect…

2020

In this study, polymeric monoliths with gold nanoparticles (AuNP@monolith) were investigated as microcartridges for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (SPE-CE-MS). “Plug-and-play” microcartridges (7 mm) were prepared from a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-based monolithic capillary column (5 cm x 250 µm i.d.), which was modified with ammonia and subsequently functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The performance of these novel microcartridges was evaluated with human transthyretin (TTR), which is a protein related to different types of familial amyloidotic polyneuropathies (FAP). Protein retention depended on…
