Determination of the residual stresses in composite laminate using the compliance method

2005

Residual stresses play an important role on the mechanical behavior of composite laminate. The development of new methods to determine the residual stresses gradient within the laminates is necessary. This article presents the adaptation of the compliance method in the case of composite laminates carbon/epoxy [02/902]s. The incremental drilling of a constant width groove allows for each increment to measure the strains (using strain gages) and displacements (using an optical device) of particularly points of the structure surface. These experimental data are compared with results given by a finite elements simulation. This comparison allows to raise the residual stresses in the composite la…

System B, Endo-Twinn and E-Fill. True temperatures inside the canal

2012

Background: The aim of this study is to verify the variations of the temperature inside the root canal with three different gutta-percha heating systems. Materials and Methods: A split-tooth model was built with a lateral groove at 3.5-mm from working length (WL) in order to insert a Chromel-Alumel K-type thermocouple placed in contact with gutta-percha. The thermocouple was connected to a digital thermometer. Sixty obturations were made with medium gutta-percha points. For 20 specimens the System B was used with the Buchanan fine plugger and the temperature was set at 200°C; for other 20 specimens the Endo-Twinn with a fine plugger was used and for the last 20 specimens we used the E-Fill …

Sloped-wall thin-film photonic crystal waveguides

2005

The effect of the slope of the groove walls in the behavior of thin-film one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides is extensively studied. In this respect, we point out its influence on the modal dispersion relations and then on the bandgap structure in general. Likewise, we also prove the lack of accuracy in the evaluation of the bandgap edges when material dispersion is ignored. The extreme importance of both facts, the wall slope and the material dispersion, in the analysis and design of realistic photonic crystal devices is emphasized. In particular, we exploit the wall slope as a new design parameter. By suitably choosing the value of the above parameter, sloped-wall photonic crystal…

Residual strain and stress analysis by speckle interferometry combined with the drill of a groove

2007

A new method for residual stresses determination combining Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) with the machining of a groove. The internal stress field is perturbed as the depth of the groove is increased incrementally [1]. The structure finds a new equilibrium state generating displacements which are measured using ESPI. This method was tested on an aluminium alloy plate treated locally by ultrasonic shot-peening. The investigation of the images obtained with the phase shifting technique and fringe patterns makes it possible to analyze, simultaneously, the stress profile along two directions: along the depth of the structure, and along the groove direction.

DNA minor groove binders: an overview on molecular modeling and QSAR approaches

2007

Molecular recognition of DNA by small molecules and proteins is a fundamental problem in structural biology and drug design. Understanding of recognition in both sequence-selective and sequence neutral ways at the level of successful prediction of binding modes and site selectivity will be instrumental for improvements in the design and synthesis of new molecules as potent and selective gene-regulatory drugs. Minor groove is the target of a large number of non-covalent binding agents. DNA binding with specific sequences, mostly AT, takes place by means of a combination of directed hydrogen bonding to base pair edges, van der Waals interactions with the minor groove walls and generalized ele…

Time spent on the smartphone does not relate to manual dexterity in young adults.

2021

Abstract Background The Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT) is widely adopted to evaluate manual dexterity, it presents normative data but the test is influenced by different factors. The influence of time spent on smartphones has not been considered before, for this reason, the objective of this study was to evaluate if smartphone use influences the time to complete the GPT. A total of 38 (21 women; 17 men) young adults 20.7 (1.5) years participated in the study. The time spent on the smartphones during the last seven days was recorded through the device itself and the GPT performance was measured. A correlation analysis between the time spent on the smartphone and GPT was performed while the t-te…

Synthesis of the new oligopeptide pyrrole derivative isonetropsin and its one pyrrole unit analogue

2013

We have designed and synthesized isonetropsin and its one pyrrole unit analogue in which the amine and carbonyl groups have been switched in positions 2 and 4, respectively instead of 4 and 2 positions of the natural antibiotic netropsin.

Inflammatory and tumor-like lesions of the pancreas

2020

Summary Inflammatory/tumor-like lesions of the pancreas represent a heterogeneous group of diseases that can variably involve the pancreatic gland determining different signs and symptoms. In the category of inflammatory/tumor-like lesions of the pancreas, the most important entities are represented by chronic pancreatitis, which includes alcoholic, obstructive and hereditary pancreatitis, paraduodenal (groove) pancreatitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, lymphoepithelial cyst, pancreatic hamartoma and intrapancreatic accessory spleen. An in-depth knowledge of such diseases is essential, since they can cause severe morbidity and may represent a potential life-threatening risk for patients. Furthe…

Computer simulations of DNA stretching

2006

Abstract In this chapter we will give short review of computer modelling/simulations of DNA manipulation as a complementary tool to current single molecule manipulation experiments in order to follow the impact on molecular structure during the manipulation experiments. As an example we report molecular dynamics simulations of a 22 base-pair DNA fragment in an explicit water solution with counter-ions to mimic a torsionally unconstrained single-molecule stretching experiment. Positions of the O5′ and O3′ atoms at one end of the 22-mer were fixed while an external linearly increasing tensile force was applied on the corresponding atoms at the other end. Changes in the intramolecular potentia…
