Investigating the links between resilience, perceived HRM practices, and retirement intentions
2019
Purpose Human resource management (HRM) scholars’ interest in older employees’ resilience has only recently started to emerge. Little is known about how resilience and perceived HRM are linked to different retirement intentions. Drawing on the conservation of resources and social exchange theories, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the links between perceived HRM practices, resilience and retirement intentions. Additionally, the paper examines the possible mediating role of resilience in the relationship between perceived HRM practices and retirement intentions. Design/methodology/approach In 2016, a cross-sectional study was conducted among older (50+) nursing professionals work…
Elementary school principals’ work from the ecological systems perspective: Evidence from Finland
2022
The present study aimed to investigate elementary school principals’ work from the ecological systems perspective and which elements of their work are experienced as demands or resources. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 principals. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the data. The results show that the way principals experience their work is individual and influenced by several internal and external factors. Some of the most extensive demands appear to be related to interaction with different stakeholders in situations where principals have the role of mediator in solving conflicting situations. Challenges also seem to arise in dealing with elements or issues…
Henkilöstöjohtamisen digitalisaatio keskisuomalaisissa PK-yrityksissä
2023
Digitalisation has reached a significant role among the literature on human resource management (HRM) ever since the turn of last millennium. During the last decade advanced digital technology systems have been enthusiastically fitted into HRM functions, even as a possible replacement. Especially consultant literature paints an overtly positive picture of advanced artificial intelligence HRM systems that deliver cost savings, efficiency, and real-time information. Scientific sources often raise more problematic issues and even threats related to human factors as well as to the core of business operations. Also, the actual strategic integration to increase competitiveness may not be more tha…
Organisational and individual resources as antecedents of older nursing professionals’ organisational commitment : Investigating the mediating effect…

Design To test a set of hypotheses, cross-sectional survey data (n = 396) were used. Data were analysed using correlation analysis and partial least-squares structural equation modelling. STROBE Statement for cross-sectional studies has been followed in this study. Results The results exhibite…
Economic, social and stakeholder-related analysis in sport facility management
2019
The importance of resource management has grown in recent years. Challenged by economic and societal changes, universities must think of new ways to gain requisite resources for research and teaching. The topic of this doctoral thesis belongs mainly to the field of social sciences of sport, as it deals with the importance of resource allocation in sports management at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU) in Finland, the University of Umeå (UU) in Sweden, and the German Sport University (GSU) in Cologne. The aim of this project is to ascertain whether these universities are able and willing to market themselves via their sport facilities. In terms of how the means of managing sport facilities c…
A systematic literature review on employee relations with CSR : State of art and future research agenda
2022
Within recent years, the literature on employee–CSR relations has grown significantly. However, the research is fragmented throughout various journals and disciplines, and we still lack a comprehensive literature review on the topic to show what we currently know about the employee relationship with CSR, and what we do not know. In this study, we conduct a systematic literature review on employee relations with CSR, based 331 journal articles. We analyze their methodological and theoretical approaches. Based on their key findings, we build a categorization of dominant research findings and their connections. Building on our review, we show how the research has been dominated by a focus on t…
Employee commitment to energy management : a qualitative interview study about employee commitment to energy management in industrial companies and p…
2015
Energy management is increasingly important to organisations that consume significant amounts of energy mainly due to the needs to comply with changing legislation and for saving financial resources. Even though energy management has received academic attention, it has not been studied in the perspective of employee commitment. Employee commitment may create various benefits to an organisation and its employees. Hence, this study aims at creating a better understanding of why employees commit to energy management and how it may be enhanced. This qualitative study was conducted using theme interviews as a data collection method. 14 employees, working among energy management, in eleven organi…
Ghostbusters! On the Narrative Creation of (Absent) Leader Characters
2022
We seek to “bust out” ghost leaders, narrated leader(ship) characters manifesting leadership influence, to discuss the inherent challenges related to leaderless management. By taking the non-corporeal aspect of leadership into account, we challenge the notion of leaderless management—which we argue has turned out to be more of an inspiring and empowering idea rather than a standing practice. We illustrate, with a Finnish high-tech organization, how organizational members narrate leader characters into existence in the non-corporeal realm during an organizational change to fill the void of a corporeal leader. While organizations may declare themselves to be leaderless, they, in fact, are not…
HRM models of online labor platforms : Strategies of market and corporate logics
2023
Studies on online labor platforms (OLPs) have revealed that OLPs can have extensive managerial control over independent workers, which affects their autonomy and precariousness. The permeability of the management makes some OLPs' roles as neutral intermediaries in labor exchanges questionable. While there are several platform work studies on the effects of human resource management (HRM) activities, earlier studies have focused more on certain types of OLP companies. Earlier OLP classifications did not make systematic distinctions between HRM activities either. This paper offers a classification to view how HRM activities manifest in OLPs. The study utilizes terms of service and webpage dat…
Yliopistot uudistuvat, uudistuuko henkilöstöjohtaminen?
2016
Yliopistojen henkilöstöjohtaminen on linkittynyt historiallisista syistä valtionhallinnon henkilöstöjohtamiseen. Tämän lisäksi yliopistolainsäädäntö on luonut vahvan juridisen kehikon henkilöstön pätevyyksille, tehtäväkausille ja tehtäville. Siirtymä byrokraattisesta henkilöstöhallinnosta kohti (strategista) henkilöstövoimavarojen johtamista on vasta tapahtumassa yliopistoissa.
