Virological efficacy and emergence of drug resistance in adults on antiretroviral treatment in rural Tanzania

Background Virological response to antiretroviral treatment (ART) in rural Africa is poorly described. We examined virological efficacy and emergence of drug resistance in adults receiving first-line ART for up to 4 years in rural Tanzania. Methods Haydom Lutheran Hospital has provided ART to HIV-infected patients since October 2003. A combination of stavudine or zidovudine with lamivudine and either nevirapine or efavirenz is the standard first-line regimen. Gender differences in human immunodeficiency virus–related oral lesions: An Italian study

Abstract Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral lesions and gender, age, CD4+ cell count, human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) viral load, antiretroviral therapy, and route of transmission in a group of HIV-infected (HIV+) persons from the Mediterranean region. Study Design: The participants in this study were HIV+ adults who sought dental care between January 1999 and June 1999 in the Department of Oral Medicine (University of Palermo, Italy). To investigate a new insertion mutation in the protease (PR) gene of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in a patient extensively pretreated with antiretroviral drugs, genotypic analyses of plasma-derived viruses were performed by sequencing segments of 1302 nucleotides in the pol gene of HIV-1. Despite optimal compliance to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) the patient showed poor virological success. Synthesis and anti-HIV activity of 2,3-diaryl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones

Several 1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones bearing a 2,6-dihalophenyl group at C-2 and a variously substituted phenyl ring at N-3 have been synthesized and tested as anti-HIV agents. The results of the in vitro tests showed that some of them proved to be effective inhibitors of HIV-1 replication.

Antiretroviral genotypic resistance in plasma RNA and whole blood DNA in HIV-1 infected patients failing HAART

The extent to which HIV-1 proviral DNA mutations cause clinically relevant antiretroviral resistance is still controversial. Paired plasma HIV-1 RNA and whole blood DNA were compared in patients failing HAART to investigate if the additional knowledge of archived mutations could improve the selection of potentially active drugs. Seventy-three HIV-1-infected patients with first/second HAART failure were studied before starting a new regimen based on RNA genotyping. Follow-up data after a 12-week therapy were available. Serum Malondialdehyde Correlates with Therapeutic Efficiency of High Activity Antiretroviral Therapies (HAART) in HIV-1 Infected Children

Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels are increased in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children, as it happens also in infected adult individuals. Introduction of high activity antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has promoted an intense decline in morbidity and mortality of these patients. Here we present data on the effect of HAART on serum MDA of HIV+ children and compare them with levels prior to HAART. MDA levels reflect, as other markers do, the HAART-induced clinical improvement and probably also the pro-oxidant/antioxidant side effects of the different drugs used. Synthesis of new 2,3-diaryl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones as anti-HIV agents

Several 2,3-diaryl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones were synthesized and evaluated as anti-HIV agents. The results of the in vitro tests showed that some of them were highly effective inhibitors of HIV-1 replication at 30-50 nM concentrations with minimal cytotoxicity, thereby acting as non-nucleoside HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs).

We have shown that synthetic CDR-related peptides and many decapeptides spanning the variable region of a recombinant yeast killer toxin-like antiidiotypic Ab are candidacidal in vitro. Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of new 3-(1-R-3(5)-methyl-4-nitroso-1H-5(3)-pyrazolyl)-5-methylisoxazoles.

A number of new 3-(1-R-3(5)-methyl-4-nitroso-1H-5(3)-pyrazolyl)-5-methylisoxazoles 6a-g (7b-f) were synthesized and tested for antibacterial and antifungal activity. Some of these compounds displayed antifungal activity at non-cytotoxic concentrations. Derivative 6c was 9 times more potent in vitro than miconazole and 20 times more selective against C. neoformans. 6c was also 8- and 125-fold more potent than amphotericin B and fluconazole, respectively.
